I used to get those every now and then when I had my diesel Mercedes.  Few times, I was required to take in to smog referee.  It sucked, but the car was always in proper operating parameters.  Most likely it is some Richard Head Prius owner having a coronary about the freedom of choice (albeit temporary) for vehicle selection.  If it is not a call to action, I would ignore it for now.  If you keep getting them, you will be called into the smog ref. also.  Just make sure that you have the correct tune when you go in.

I sure hope that the beaters emitting a smoke screen trailing behind them on the freeway for five miles also get cited.

i dont understand why you would want your truck to "roll coal" in the first place.  its retarded.

It is the "Hey! Look at me factor", same reason people bump their insane loud sound systems. I absolutely love the sound of a tuned diesel going hard. But the whole smoking people out is getting old. Just my opinion though and to each their own.

Might wanna check your tune brother...black smoke out off a diesel truck it's no bueno unless you have a smoke tune on it. They can f you pottery hard if too many people report you.

"Stupid move...shouldn't have done that"

a fast diesel is a CLEAN burning diesel.  not a crappy tuned black smoke burning diesel.

bingo.  you have the "i wanna be annoying" tune.  get popped again and you'll be off to the CHP inspection station/smog ref with some hefty fines.

hahaha its a simply unstall... no ref problems here. theres one of those fast clean burnig clean diesel tunes also but i only use that one  on hondas

i drive a diesel, some mods, plenty O power, when needed...never was attracted to the rolling coal crowd.  its not a proper tune(short of sled pulling).  too rich.  a small puff on initial throttle....maybe....but the cloud or black snake out exhaust     in fact, i specifically said i didnt want the smoke.  so it was tuned to reduce it on take off....gives turbo a chance to boost and create a better fuel mixture.

eventually, you may get a summons to have it inspected(or not), maybe even on your dime....an inconvenience.   but hey, its your ride.

I'm not gonna bear around the bush here, either your truck runs like crap or your an a$$ hole and after reading some of your posts it's seems your trucks fine.

Do the diesel community a favor, sell your truck, buy a ford ranger with a dirt bike permanently mounted in the bed and move on. And don't forget the flat bill hat.

I had I dude do that to me on the fourth of July, we were sitting in chairs waiting for a parade to start and he thought it would be funny....

I didn't think it was nearly as funny as the four guys sitting next to us (had the whole family including my 93 year old grandmother with us) that chased him down and drug him through the window of the truck and proceeded to kick his ass... Funny, but charges were never filed on the four pissed off  jocks. Go figure.

The diesel community has enough shit to deal with as far as douche bag environmentalists (Yes, I own a Diesel 4X4 AND a hybrid) without the help of even bigger douche bag diesel owners... Why do you think these idiotic smog laws exist?

Grow up.

If your truck is newer like 07 and up the heavy black smoke is probably also ruining your expensive diesel particulate filter

I have a diesel also. The black smoke is merely unburned/wasted fuel. There are plenty of other ways to make power than dump extra fuel. Not to mention over time its hard on rings and cylinders among other things

Bottom line...rolling coal isn't as cool as people think.  Just like the stupid tug of war contests....proves nothing. Being able to belch a black cloud on demand seems very childish...in fact is doing more harm than good...getting the air quality people to focus more on diesels than they need to....sure, there are other reasons....but we don't Joe public filing complaints about Joe wannabe cool spewing emissions all over the place.
You've got the notice. Continue being "the cool guy"...maybe you'll get another...maybe never again...in the meantime, you're giving diesels a bad name and sh!ting on the community.

I don't know how all you guys own these diesel trucks and have never wanted to blow a lil cloud at the Honda civic with his stanced out cambered in wheels riding your ass. All diesels are gonna put out a lil, excess is stupid especially if your already on boost, but I know I'm gonna get some shit for this but I think if someone wants to be idiot I think they might deserve a lil.

Well, My junk is old, 6.9 with a turbo smokes when your out of range, that 3rd-4th shift is a canyon, no aneroid, and it might 'roll coal' at 16- 2200 rpms, I just don't use as much loud pedal then... (turbo'd, tickled and straight piped since 1985, 250 hp or so)

The old Pete has a turbo as big as a berkeley pump, Its tickled, too, maybe 335 hp or so, and may take a while to spool up
After you drive the old Pete, w/ 5+4 trans's, Ill hand you your big girl panties back.
If your tail gating me, ya might see black fog (OOPS, I missed a gear  :o  )

My newer junk is bone stock, (kitty ran away, muffler fell out) 500K on one, 270K on the other, both PSD 7.3's, (and no smoke, or very little) Best motor ever put in a Ford truck says International all over it.

I drive in CA too much to ahve CHP or DOT on my azz...

Rolling coal is the equivalent to all that annoying crap you just list, and yah there's a place and time for smoke but that's only when your spooling up at the pulls or at the strip and there's no reason for a$$ holes to try and spool up a stock turbo around town or puffing smoke at anyone. My old 7.3  f250 was running swamps tunes, swamps hybrid injectors, tweaked hpop, ported intake spider and a 4in down pipe into a single 5in stack and guess what, the only reason I went to a stack was so I didn't have to work about smoking people out and even then I had very little if any smoke on spool up and under load. Stupid people bring negative attention and that gives the EPA all the more reason to crack down.

because unfortunately it fuels the fire behind environmentalists, etc to put even more restrictions on things that you and i enjoy, not to mention anyone in the future.  its not a "scare tactic" as big rigs already require huge EXPENSIVE retrofits to be clean or complete engine replacements with new emissions standards and consumer trucks have expensive lame regen systems tacked onto their already expensive pricetags.  all for what?  to blow some smoke at people?

Key words quoted, anything mechanical is gonna leave a trail, it's the nature of the beast.

But let me ask all the diesel owners that are active in this thread , would you pay 75 bucks to have a dedicated tune just to black out a few lanes?

What in the hell are you talking about?

Harmless?  You just said that spewing measurable "pounds" of hydrocarbons and carbon particles are "harmless" to the environment. ...

Seriously?

Well damn. If I would have known that before, do you have any idea how many billions of dollars I could have saved Caterpillar, Cummins, International, Isuzu, Mercedes, Ford, and any other diesel engine manufacturer?

I could have also saved my customers trillions of dollars and not converted all the process boilers and retrofitted them with low/no NOX burners and they also would not have had to change out their outdated diesel standby generators

Sometime needs an education in air quality.

I paid $450 for my duramax tunner and at level 4 I get 22 mpg compared to 13 mpg stock and yes everyonce and awhile I do black out a few lanes getting on the freeway. But I'm sure I've made my money back on the programmer since I bought the truck new when I was 18 in 2007 and have 165k now.

And honestly if we all cared about the environment so bad why do we all have jet boats that get 1-2 mpg with blowers and tunnel rams that can go 100+. Let's all not start acting like AQMD. We are all having fun, some people in different ways than others.

I work for the west coasts largest mechanical contractor doing HVAC, controls and refrigeration.

I have been doing this work for nearly 20 years.

Before that I was an automotive service technician and boat mechanic, I worked on both commercial and pleasure water craft. I spent nearly 15 years on that trade before doing what I do now.

Let me just say, that some of the comments on here are so uneducated and environmentally irresponsible, it totally makes me think of the condition of the river after the tube float...

Your mother does not follow you around picking up after your dumb ass. What you spew into the environment is EVERYBODY's business. You ever heard of the off road campaign of "Tread Lightly"? do you know why that came about? It was because of stupid irresponsible douche bag punks going out onto public lands and destroying natural habitats. Why in the hell do you think the BLM and other Nazi government agencies were able to come in and take over? Because these morons gave them the tools necessary to do so... Nothing else. They had evidence of total disregard of the environment and were able to convince congress, the president and the general public that they had to step in... Basically had to be your mother...

Why do you think diesel trucks are now being SMOG inspected? Because of what people are doing by "Rolling Coal" on people and being a complete punk dick.... You gave them every tool they needed to establish this precedent. You mother had to come in and take control....

Why do you think most inland lakes, with very few exceptions now have a decibel restriction for noise? Again, because super loud isn't loud enough and we have to be dry stack headers and bus the marinas and water front housing... Again, needed mother to come clean up your act.

Why do you think it is that Caterpillar completely quit building DOT diesels?  Because it was too expensive and difficult to build a reliable diesel service engine to meet the new DOT standards...

So you think you're making it so the standards will be reduced by creating a carbon trail? WTF.

FWIW, to anyone reading this thinking they know everything because some fuctard in Saskatchewan says it is less pollution than a gasoline engine exhaust, he is totally FOS. Diesel exhaust carries 200X the emissions that a car can create. Even if that car ran like total crap.

Just so you know... You know that purpleish/brown nasty smoke looking shit you see in the sky in metropolitan areas? That my friends is NOX (oxides of nitrogen), diesel exhaust produces more than 25% of that NOX... Still think it's "environmentally Harmless"?

You also think that because a large portion of the black smoke "falls to the ground" that it does not get into the water supply and contaminate everything that lives in, drinks and swims in that water?

Think again.

Get a clue.

Let me tell you why it's different...

I put roughly six time the diesel in my truck as I do pump gas or race fuel in my boats. To stretch it even further, my boat probably runs cleaner than a coal rolling POS... To stretch it the last two miles, not every diesel truck on the road is towing a jet boat....

It is all about cause and effect.

We care because "rolling coal" has lead to more and more diesel emission controls.

The EPA/CARB could care less how many more mpg's you get blowing black smoke. They love to throw videos of rolling coal on the liberal media as a way to control diesel vehicles. There's a reason there aren't more diesel cars and SUVs in the US and that's because of State emissions. Environmental extremist will always use black smoke as a reason to restrict and ban diesel vehicles.

My diesel will puff smoke like all diesels during a pull under load, but it's dumb to go out of the way to make excess smoke. Plus excess smoke is a waste of fuel, not an increase.

True.  Nothing better than riding motorcycles especially on dirt tight single track or hill climbs ( SoCal guys probly gotta Google those terms cuz they got hills not mountains and dunes).  Anyway but cause of A-holes the Gov controls hella places we ride where and when.  Green sticker Red sticker.
Fucking helmet law I wear a full face on my Dyna doesnt mean I wanna wear it cuz some politician passed a law saying I Have to.

Diesels now have DEF and hella smog shit to lower NOX

I take my boat to some lakes and get dirty looks cuz they think Im gonna cause a rucus on the lake shit even around camp.  And the sound limits as stated

This thread is going nowhere cause some people dont and wont understand.

I think views and opinions are great but I hate to see time wasted with no change in outcome

I too agree with many of you... about why rolling coal, isn't a good idea. Someone asked if diesel owner's would pay 75 to have a smoke switch..... nope!  Serves me No purpose. And I too prefer to fly under the radar.  Whether smoke is harmless or not....it Looks bad and I for one  don't want to aid the environmentalists in restricting our vehicles or dirt/water toys.
Now....where's the "what a piece of a$$" thread....

And I suppose your word over the guy in the video is correct right ? That you know more then a diesel mechanic right ? Or anyone for that matter. You think that because you can't actually see the emissions coming from a gas burning engine that it's 10x better then a diesel ? To be honest man you sound like one of those know it all guys. My point was that no one actually knew that op was out rolling coal just because he got a letter in the mail about it. Like I stated before I've gotten one and I've maybe rolled coal twice in the 2 years I've had my truck. The bottom line is that diesels produce suet to make power and improve fuel economy. AS I STATED ABOVE I DONT THINK ITS COOL TO ROLL COAL.

You wanted me to back up what I said about it being as harmless as a gas engine and I showed a video of proof whether you believe it or not. What proof do you have besides your thoughts ?

OK, the gloves are now off.....

It actually takes a lot for another persons ignorance to piss me off, but you managed it.

First, Kwood DID say in as many words that he had been rolling coal.... Your reading comprehension is piss poor at best...

Second. In the video that YOU shared, which is not what I would call a Nobel prize winning piece, said how harmful to health and environment diesel emissions are. Apparently you had selective deafness when that part aired... The dipshit mechanic was just down playing it based on absolutely no factual information at all.... But you bought it... What is he going to do? say " yeah what we're doing is actually very detrimental to the environment and can cause severe adverse health effects... C'mon man... Just because there is no law saying you can't do it, does not mean that it should be done... They aren't in California, or even the U.S.

It is like comparing filthy dirty coal fired power plants in China to ours and saying "hey, they do it"... Ever seen their air quality index? You can get cancer by going outside for an hour during the day.

Third, I do combustion analysis for a living. So yeah, I probably know quite a bit more than you about the subject.

Fourth, the proof is in about every air quality management study that has been done over the last 40 years. Not to mention the National Cancer Institute and the American Lung Association and the World Health Organization.

Mining companies spend buttloads of money trying to prevent miners from breathing spent diesel exhaust, this is not even speaking directly about thick black soot.... Diesel exhaust in general... So your saying the high carbon content shit you can't even see through is completely environmentally negative...

Good luck with all that...

Doesn't matter to me if you are a coal rolling fan or not. It was your annoyingly obtuse attitude toward the whole thing. In other words, a mentality that gives you the illusion that it is socially acceptable. I assure you, it is not.

Wake up gentlemen. We only have this one smelly dirt clod... Once the fat lady sings, it's over.

Oh yeah, and it was 200X better.... not 10X. Again, reading comprehension.  :screwy:

I agree that you definitely got shit on. And I also believe this "rolling coal" is a fad, unfortunately it does bring a bad name. Just like the import fad that went through, it brings negative attention due to the careless fools that jump on the bandwagon, no matter what proof is put out there, There will always be that 10% that don't care if their actions create negative reactions...

As for GT, I trust this guy with everything mechanical as he has never given me wrong or false information.

This thread has turned into a YouTube comment page. People are 100% entitled to their opinions and somebody will always disagree....

Hey Kwood, back to your original post, I none of my diesel buddies have ever received one of those letters, but as posted above. None of them roll coal. Best of luck man.

I vote Cummins.... That being said, the only non poser in this point in the game is Ford. Everybody else (even Ford until recently) uses someone else' garbage...   :sly:

Gotcha, I hadn't heard that term before. I always run it all the way down to make sure it will take all 5 gallons once I open em up.

FYI, $11.84 at Wal Mart for 2.5 gallons. If anyone knows where to get it cheaper I'd appreciate it.

Get a clue.

I am done with the idiotic thread.
