Anyone use a boat trailer lock?

Coupler locks, wheel clamps, etc

What would you recommend?

Are you talking about just when it stored or when you're at the river?

Had a coupler lock until it got lost while trying to rush to have a friend hook up my trailer to retrieve my boat.
I felt pretty secure with it on. It just would have sucked to have lost the only key to it. Spare keys are your friend at the river.

I lock mine, regardless. In the garage, out of the garage, out with the SCJB group, where ever. Just an east coast habit I got into. Built a nice utility trailer back east years ago. Brought it home from the shop, parked it in the street, GONE at 6AM the next morning. Nowadays, between me, and the neighbors, busted 3 guys trying to hook onto my "In Process" 26' with chains, whatever since I lock all the hitches (Don't use cheap ones, the tamper, bolt cutter proof ones are the BESTEST!

)

I even lock the hitch in my receiver! Back east, I had a beautiful Class 4 (Weight Distribution bar mounts 'cuz I towed backhoes and stuff) disappear when I was in a grocery store for less than 5 minutes to get cigarettes! $500 hitch back then, dunno what it'd cost me today. I guarantee the rednecks that took it had no idea what it was for UNLESS it was to move their home.......

Not that I don't trust you guys! Far from it! But with Craig's list, Ebay, etc, easy stuff like this turns into cash quick. Boats? They dpn't need no stinkin' boats! But that tandem trailer would haul at LEAST 5 lawnmowers and a handful of leaf blowers!..........

But seriously, will be storing the boat in my uncles garage out at the river, will be chained to the 24' pontoon. But anti-theft devices just take a few minutes longer to hook up. If thieves want it they will get it. But extra security never hurt

Or go Chad's route and buy Cobra Snakes!!!!

bingo. for every lock or chain theres a pair of cutters that will snap it in half in seconds. ive had plenty a bicycle stolen with chain, or even those kyrptonite solid locks. and for every lock that "cant be cut" theres a locksmith that can crack it.

i bought a car and it came with wheel locks but had no key. i stopped at the FIRST wheel shop i could find in wilmington and they said they couldnt help me. one of their workers stopped me before i got to my car. told me to meet him down the street. he comes out with a socket with teeth on it and took em off for me. $20. didnt even care if the car was mine, etc.

I have the old school slide in coupler so when ever i have to unhitch or drop it off at storage, i just leave it in the open position an lock it that way. Ive never felt the need to chain up my tires at storage since theres a vietnam vet that lives on site with a rack full of 870's lol

I honestly don't use anything. I am a locksmith and any lock out there I can crack. It's just a matter of once I figure it out which would only take me a couple minutes. Every lock is pretty much the same concept. A drill straight through the key hole will break all the pins and pop open. I would go with something to lock the wheels that way when a thief tries to steal it there more likely to go after something with a tongue lock as its a lot easier. Didn't mean to ruin anyone's days just thought I would put my two cents in. Only reason I don't use anything is because the next door neighbor is an old kook that never sleeps and he sits outside at night to watch the neighborhood. Plus I have a 95 lb pitbull that sleeps under the boat lol

Pits aren't scary or mean dogs...Media makes them out to be attack dogs. Been bit by a few dogs but never a bully breed. Best insurance is everything you have to protect your investment. I raised my fence to 8' and added carpet tack strip along the top edge, 4 dogs, cams, guns and various things inside prop....Don't have a sign that states beware...must read enter at own risk, dog on duty and smile your on camera.

No there not. Honestly of someone came into my back yard he wouldn't do a dam thing to stop them. He just looks mean. The only thing he will protect is my daughter. Media makes them out to be killer dogs but he's been the best dog I have had. Lazy as f but a great mans best friend

Never thought about carpet tack strips........Wonder if that'd work for keeping strange women that keep waking up here out of my master bathroom???

I think I'm going to pick up a coupler lock, and a wheel lock, and maybe a cable to tie it to the slab it's on, the reason I'm asking is not for the storage at home (it's garaged, 24/7) but for when I pick up a trailer at the river this weekend (hopefully) I'm planning on leaving it there for the season and while McIntyre is an awesome park and I have very little doubt nothing will happen...I'd rather make sure I'm taking some extra precautions to protect my baby. I already use a locking hitch and pin whenever it's hooked to my car. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get insurance now too.

Well I'm gonna say it and lord knows my boat will be gone when I get home but locks and what not are only gonna scare off lazy thief's. Anything on the tung is useless for someone that's wants your $hit and has the tools to get it. I had worked for a repo company as a second job and when they located the boat they had been looking for for over a year all it took was two battery Powered angle grinders to hack off the front half of the tung and a few grade 8 bolts and bolt on tung and off we went. Took 2 mins, we timed it. Even then a good length of chain wrapped around the trailer and bumper of the truck could of pulled it out without dragging the front of the trailer. Like stated above any lock can be drilled and popped and with the new battery powered sawzalls and angle grinders it only takes a minute to cut and book it. If stored for long periods of time in the open ill pull all the tires off and set the axles on wood blocks but other than that all you can do is use tung locks, latch locks and maybe a tire boot and hope only honest people come through your area as long as its on your property with some form of lock on it homeowners and your boat insurance will cover it.

Now when I'm hooked up to my trailer and Jordan Dangerfield can verify I use 2 massive Chains as my safety chains that are wrapped around my truck frame and my trailer with two pad locks on each length of chain and a latch lock from master lock. Someone would really want my stuff to cut through them.

I guess I'm lucky as nothing ever walks away here - I don't worry about it.
I also carry enough insurance to cover it if it does... not worth getting an ulcer over.
But then that is HERE, your experience may vary depending on your location.
One of the better locking solutions I've seen involved one of those circular locks through the hitch latch while its got the ball in it connected to the slide in receiver hitch with a locking pin through that. Also makes hookup a breeze.

Yeah, that's a coupling lock, they are pretty dandy and for around 40 bucks for that, and another 40 for a wheel clamp I think I should be fine. There are tons of people that leave boats laying around at McIntyre so I'm really not too worried about it I'm just taking some extra precautions, for those of you that know the story behind my boat know that it can't really be replaced via insurance. I'm guessing if someone showed up and started trying to cut locks off and stuff the police would be summoned pretty quickly, it's regularly patrolled. I think I'd be fine with nothing but I'd hate to not invest ~80 bucks in a couple locks and be proven wrong.

If somebody really wants it, it'll take less than a minute to get her up on a roll-on tilt-bed car hauler regardless of what you do. If they bother to but a repo company looking sign on the door, nobody will even call the cops.
