Bell Moto 3

First attempt on full resto of a 1975 moto 3. Can't beat the style of back then or even how hardcore durable they still are today 40+ years later. The inner foam shell was in great shape. My ol lady sewed up a bitchn fabric + bandanna I picked out. New snaps, straps with buttons... Color matched to my Harley.

That came out sik.

What are you going to do with it? I bet I have tossed four of those. My Arai likely weighs 1/4 of what that thing does. Lol

Moto 3's typically get good money if all intact. None of the old soft foam/fabric is reusable. I plan on using this helmet for special Harley runs... Its to bitchn of a helmet to damage by overuse now. I won another couple on ebay an going to restore one for the girlfriend matching her bike.

That looks awesome! Nice work! I started racing with an old Moto 3 when I was a kid. I think that helmet is still in my pops's garage. [ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ]

These helmets are built way better than nowaday helmets. The "ice chest" isnt crushed. They were built to crash in several times unlike helmets now which are built to handle one drop off the kitchen counter. I do plan on using this an feel safer in it than anything made today.

Idk about all that.

Maybe the helmet would fare better than a new one in a crash,  a newer helmet is designed to protect your head.

That's like saying you're safer in a 1965 Buick Skylark than you are in a 2015 Ford Fusion in a head on collision. The fact is, your not.

Again, not starting a pissing match, I will agree that the helmet will hold up, but lacks current standard protection. That's all I'm saying. I'll stick with my 2014 Arai XD4.

No offense intended.

I can tell u first-hand,spinal cord injury or brain damage is no joke. Park those helmets in ur man cave or next to that fine azz boat of yours. Go out and buy the best/newest helmets you can afford. I wore out a bagged '75 Gold Wing and a H-D FLSTN, over 500,000 miles w/ the the best brain buckets my wife and I could afford.I honestly hope you guys do the same.

Modern day padding and polycarbonate materials are far superior in protective qualities  than 40 plus year old fiberglass.. Those helmets are absolutely cool, but best added to your memorabilia, like that Doc Johnson Moto Guzzi Daytona  I should have purchased few years past.Anywho, best of luck to you guys!

New helmets lack current standard protection. They are a one shot an done.  I wonder how many guys on this site have 30-40 year old hulls an put mass amounts of HP in them? The Moto 3 was made like a boat hull from that time in America. I did my research an happy with the results. I have 2 Gringo's which I use for the majority. The padding was all replaced... the ice chest is the same as nowaday. I tore two new helmets apart to get some needed clips an I broke the new helmet in my bare hand.

You're missing the whole point.

The new helmets (talking quality, not a Bilt or similar) exceed any standard set forth by sanctioning bodies for racing and DOT as well as Snell ratings. The Moto III does not.

Just the hard lower collar is enough for me not to wear it. The hard cuff does not compress and can cause serious neck trauma in an event.

The standards get more strict, not more lax.

Like I said earlier,  I think I tossed three or four of them.

Also tossed a Simpson Bandit in favor of the new dual sport.

To each their own. It is bitchen, just not sure if I would hang my life in it.

The purpose of helmets have changed somewhat over the years. The original idea was to make them in-de-fucking-structable so that the wouldn't come apart under a severe impact and therefore... Save your melon. But then technology, testing, research, and seeing results of this idea and what actually happens to not just your noggen... But your brain during an impact... Philosophy changes as well as the idea of how a helmet should be built and what it needs to do. Now they are sacrificial pieces designed to protect not just that nice noggen... But more importantly, your noodle. Much like current race cars are designed to absorb and dissipate impact from crashes instead of being built like tanks and transfering all the impact energy to the driver. Brain and spinal injury is more the focus than in years past. Testing and constant upgrading does not EVER go backwards in quality... The lawsuits alone in this sue happy society would dictate this be an impossibility.

So yeah... I'm bummed NO santioning racing body will allow me to run my bitchen old school metal flake Bell 500 open face because it looks cool as hell... But is Snell 1976... So a little out of date. So, I'm cool with the fact that I have to wear a current Snell approved Shoei open face, because I do like not dig the idea of being a drooling veggie if I were to be in a situation where I depended on my head protection.

I'm all for you wearing what you want... The only person your decision impacts is yourself... So you should be able to do as you wish in such an istance... But just know that those things in no shape or form can hold a candle as far as actual brain and spinal protection compared to a current Snell approved helmet... Basically, from an internal injury stand point, what you got for protection is equivalent to a skull cap. If you're cool with that... Then fuckit... Rock it! Dig the paint job on Gan's.

I wounder why so many people install large HP in old jet boats?.... Constant upgrading doesn't ever go backwards. I'm so bummed that the NJBA would allow this. I wouldn't put my life in a 30+ year old hull with big HP an run passes anywhere near people or in it... but that just me. The only person that would impact is you an the others near by.

Your thinking on this is so backwards.

I'm not bashing you at all, just trying to understand how you actually think that this particular helmet is safer than the newer designs. I assure you it is not.

Are you the guy that thinks you're safer in a 1965 Buick than you are in a modern car with airbags because it's bigger and heavier?  Hint; you're not.

The whole idea of the newer,  lighter helmets is to "absorb impacts" not "transfer the Shockwave".

Not trying to be offensive,  actually just concerned for your well being.

Like I said before,  I threw several of these helmets in the trash in favor of my new ones and I certainly would not have allowed my significant other or my kids to use them if something so much better was available.

You did an amazing job restoring them. They're beautiful,  but they would never leave the shelf if I owned either.

Be safe. Love you brother.

New helmets are designed today with a shelf life. The outside material is a one time drop an done. The inner ice chest is the same material still to this day which is non degradable. The moto 3 was designed to last several/much abuse... not thinking backwards at all or have a 65 Buick.  If I choose to ride in AZ helmet less... then what? In reality if you crash on pavement regardless of helmet choice your f..ked. Unlike people who run passes in 30+ year old hulls near individuals right?

Seriously? This is beyond apples and oranges comparison... More like comparing apples and cannon balls.

How about this... everyone else is totally wrong... People here are wrong... Department of Transportation is wrong... SFI is wrong... SNELL is wrong... NHRA, NJBA, F1, NASCAR, SCORE, Etc... All racing sanctioning bodies... All wrong... Because a 1976 Bell Moto 3 is far safer of a helmet than the modern junk people are forced to wear. Does that even seem like a remotely reasonable arguement?

Nobody says you can't wear that thing if you want... Personally... You can wear a home depot bucket, or nothing at all and it wouldn't be neither my concern nor business... Nor is it the point... But to argue that it it is SAFER than a current rated helmet is... Just without any basis or foundation.
