so i just moved into this new place and the bathtub was a mess...leaky faucet/knobs...everything rusted and corroded.



so i get on the horn with skip the plumber and find out what i need to do to get it fixed.

well, one thing led to another and next thing i knew i was MUCH deeper into this project then i ever intended to be. you could press one the tile and it would flex in....when removing the tub spout i pushed in/broke the tile behind it...so i pulled it out. and then the next one....it was like a sweater unraveling...there was just plain old dry wall behind the tile and it was basically mud.

..and hardware installed. unfortunately...i did all that hard work and the tub is stainted real bad still. i tried just about everything to get it out, but its there to stay.

Good job Brad Villa. Just incase you havent tried it yet give that CLR stuff a try. Put it on the tub, leave it soak for a while and rub it off(the tub that is). Good luck.

I'm proud of ya son! Do you have any idea how much that shit would have cost? Your LL should give you a free month's rent, at least. Looks good Brad.

good job buddy! I just jumped head over heals into remodeling my bathroom. samething some numbnut used regular dryway and fake tile paneling in mine and it stared molding from the inside out so I ripped it all out and put in grean board now I just need to finish tileing... Ill post pics tonight when I get home from work.

Pfft...that's nothin.

Here is what I've been doing the last couple weeks....

The old tub coming out....notice the lack of any substantial floor underneith it.  Had to replace the joists under the tub, replace the entire subfloor, replace the tub (chipped and pealing from shitty refinish job), new plumbing in the whole bathroom, new tile tub surround, new tile floor, new vanity, new ceiling, new walls, new window.....it was all screwed up. 













If the tub enamel is dull...try a small buffing wheel with some automotive polish.

If that doesn't work, I've got some 4" diamond polishing pads that go from 50 grit to 6000 grit that I picked up to polish the edges of my new porcelain tile, the finer grits would probably work badass for shining up the tub again... you can buy a set on ebay for around $49 I think.

Granite...I found a nice piece of remnant at a local granite fabricator...matching corner shelves, window sill, and vanity top.  Paid an ungodly amount of money for the fab work...cuz I thought it was tough, and he still cut the shelves and the window sill wrong so I had to recut everything.  With a turbo wheel on an angle grinder, this stuff cuts like plywood.  Finished the tile at about 2 in the morning last night.  Grout tonight, then floor tile and cabinets...hopefully I'll have it done this weekend. 

 

It's my only shower too.  It helped that the wifey was outta town for 2 weeks with her parents.  I tried to plan the project well, and it worked out sort of well...The tub remained functional (even though everything else was torn up) until a Friday night, The next day I fixed the floor structure and subfloor, and the new tub went in Sunday morning and I got the place all replumbed and hooked up that day.  Had to do the camping/spongebath thing for a couple nights.  I've been taking baths for the last week and a half.

I changed the layout too....used to have the vanity about 6 inches away from the faucet end of the tub leaving no access except from the other end of the tub.  With our little one on the way, I imagine we'll be spending quite a bit of time on a faucet end giving baths so I switched the sink and the toilet and added some cabinetry cuz we've got no storage in my stupid house.  I should have it done early next week...I'll post pics, or maybe start my own thread.

Oh, and you can't do it in 3 days like the guys on TV....

I find that amusing.  Old houses have walls that aren't straight, wood that needs to be replaced, and plenty of other problems that need to be figured out.  Me and my dad (engineer) spent about 2 days sitting in lawn chairs in the bathroom drinking beer while staring at stuff, measuring, and figuring out how to lay everything out....the window got moved over so we wouldn't end up with a sliver of tile, the wall on the back end of the tub got shimmed out about 1 3/8", and plenty of other little simple shit that they can't possibly pay attention to on the TV renovations....I watched on last night and just giggled.

When you get ready to hang the front door Brad, lemme know. Did that for 2 years and trained by the best at it. Do a pre hung, goes without saying, but I might have a trick or two to help you out with that. It's really very simple, but most people (Home Builders included) mess it up overthinking it as far as plumb and level.(Use the level once, and only once, rest is physics). Cut out and rehung almost every door in my house, and my neighbors houses, due to improper install.

With an air nailer, sawzall and cordless drill, should be an hour job for a novice at worst, no matter how bad the walls are out of plump (And they will be, this is the southwest).

Also, dunno what you have, but I bet there are a few Special Purchase doors that didn't sell, at least here, that might be a sweet deal there. Send me a pic to my phone of what you have. Off to work soon, I assume a 3'0, 6'8 door? I can check inventory at the local stores to you as well.
