Camping...
« on: July 08, 2010, 05:43:16 AM »
I'm looking for a lake or river (besides Big River) within the 200 mile radius of Long Beach I can camp out at for the weekend. As less rules or inspections as possible and the water as clean as possible. If you guys got any ideas please let me know.

BV is dirty (brown) and tons of rules. most of your socal lakes are big time on rules...and kinda gross.

my rule of thumb is if im knee deap, i should be able to at least see my feet.

i suggest crazy horse @ havasu...also theres tons of camp grounds along the parker strip. You can camp on lake mead as well.....macintyre was a nice place to camp as well.

Why "was" macintyre a nice place?

Am I wrong on this one but I heared not too many small jetboats on havasu?

BV is a great lake to camp at. You can camp right at the water's edge. The sites have grass & nice shade trees. You can leave your boat in the water the entire time you're camping. The only rule that really sucks is the 45MPH speed limit on the water, but that's about 10MPH more than most of the lakes in So Cal. Brad's right, the water is a nice shade of brown thanks to the silt that gets churned up and never really settles. But we don't all live 20 minutes from Meed or the River, every lake in So Cal is that way.  For the money and the close proximity to Bellflower, you're not going to beat it.

i said "was" because we were camping there a few months ago....as in past tense, not that it isnt nice now. I'd go there again.

Havasu is a bit rough, but not any different then any socal lake will be on any given weekend. only place youre going to find decent water is on the river (minus the parker strip)

mead is about 30-45 minutes from the vegas strip.

BV is nice, been there several times. if it was local to me, i'd use it. just as if mead wasnt local to me, i'd never go there.

i know south of avi casino you can camp on the beach. Last weekend there was plenty of people with tents and trucks launching their boats right from the beach. Looked like a good time, but im spoiled with my parents river house.  ;D

sorry, didnt mean to come off as criticizing your suggestion. was just adding information to what you suggested. depending on your group size, the $5/person isnt that bad.

oh no worries, i intended to have some humor in that.  :D

if you do decide to go around avi or needles for campin, dont anchor your boat overnight or you might be using your boat as a beach chair all day. I saw plenty of that last weekend.  :screwy:

I've been to Piru quite a few times... in a barge and it was rough when the wind kicked up. I hope you don't sit too low... Campground is awesome!

Yeah that's the only thing the ol lady is worried about is the campground and compared to some of these guys, my boat doesn't sit too low hehe. So far the only lake I've been too was Elsinore and it gets rough up there too when the wind kicks up not to mention I'm a little tired of seing the dead fish belly up haha. The final deal braker was...July 1st 25 dollar launch fee. 25 bucks for that dump. Thx but no thx.

LOL, I hear on all accounts! Piru is rougher btw. But clean water and a family atmosphere at the campground... at least last time I was there it was.

Good luck with that! You're going to find out that virtually all of the lakes in So Cal require water and baffles.

That's a good rule.  i remember my maiden voyage in the sunken wonder at Elsinore...I was idling in to pick up my dad at the beach and the boat stopped.  i looked down and couldn't see the bottom, so I jumped overboard and didn't get my ankles wet  LOL.

That's why we love the river.

Took a trip out to Piru this Saturday. Water was clean you could almost see the bottom of the lake. Scenery was gorgeous and the camp sites were clean. Nobody bothered me regarding my ot headers and yet it was the worst lake trip I ever took. My dumbass didn't check the weather at Piru so I drove up there blindly. The wind was strong and it was mid 70s. In the hour the boat was on the lake I almost sank it twice hahaha. Wakes were too big.

Worst trip ever. Looks like from now on I'll be testing my boat at Elsinore. Filthy or not.

The baffles, no problem. Water injection to the headers won't happen. I welded the holes shut hehehe.
