I have a 08 Titan with the 5.6 I only get around 11-12 mpg

why not get an older one that has a 350 or a 400 trans. and 4l60 was used in all 1/2 ton trucks and suvs . its a 350

I'm not getting a diesel, unless I could find a late 90s 5.9 cummins/crew cab...which doesn't exist.   The only reason I want the 3/4 ton is because I want a 4L80 trans....4L60s are for minivans, not trucks.  I suppose if I could find a 5.3/4L80 1/2 ton I'd be stoked....to bad those don't exist.

The truck I'm looking at has 170K on it and I can get it for $5.

Newer than what you're looking for, my 2011 5.3/6L80 gives high 19 mpg unloaded on freeway to Vegas and back. 15-16 pulling my 21 footer to Laughlin and back. She just pulled a 7k lb+ enclosed trailer from CA, over the Mississippi and through the Smokey mountains to NC and got 13 mpg. There were three hours between Amarillo and Oklahoma City of which the truck would not go faster than 40mph due to severe headwind. I was runnin 75mph when the gettin was good any other time. The two extra gears and the 80 series trans are what sold me on the truck. You can see the weight on the truck, that's with the roll away boxes to the rear of the trailer axles.

The 4l60 is based off the 700r4 and ive never had a prob with mine im my 93 that had an alum head small block makin decent power and me driving it pullin my boat at 90 or so i have a 94 one ton now with the 4l80 and really the only difference i see is the 4l80 is heavier and built to handle more torque and alot of heavy towing if ur just towing a boat under 20 ft the 4l60 will be fine i towed a 70's caddie and about 1k pounds a couple times sittin on bump stops and still never had a prob with the trans

I'm averaging 18 in my '12 dodge hemi crew. Your buddies must drive like assholes. I cruise 80 on the freeway and easy starts and stops on the lights.
Pat my pops has the 6 liter in an 05 crew with a little lift and tires and averages 16-18. My 4 runner used to drink the gas on the way to the river. I'd fill up in Carlsbad. 1/2 a tank top off at dillon road and get to the river with 1/4 tank. With the dodge I can fill up, and have 1/2 a tank when I get to big river

Kevin how many miles on your truck.Mine has only 3300 on it and I'm only averaging 13 ,similar driving style.I've heard they improve as they get some miles ,I hope mine does

Review, back from the dead.   LS motors are junk.   I've seen 12 mpg at best, around town, very easy, I can squeek 8.5-9 mpg, and it tows like shit...no torque under 4000 Rpms.  I want my old iron headed truck back.

I had an 01 6.0 2500 chevy that was lifted, and it was cool and all, but full load over the grape vine ore any decent grade is a slow go in a gas jobber. Especially if they are lifted then they loose even more power. Get a diesel any diesel, You want to be the guy going 75 out of Indio not 40mph. My 04 duramax gets 20 mpg consistently, and my 83gmc cummins gets 15mpg. Gas motors are for jet boats, Diesels are for trucks.

The best solution would be to not tow at 80 mph.  Duh.   For what your ticket is gonna cost you could fill your tank several times.
If you have a blow out you may be spending substantially more than that.  If the drive is 300 miles the difference between 60 mph average and 75 is one hour.  If the drive is 200 miles the difference is about 40 minutes.

80, this POS won't pull itself up the grade out of Indio without unlocking the converter and dropping into 3rd.   My iron head 5.7 would drag the boat up the grade at 65 locked up.   I get 9mpg in this pile....unloaded.   I'm over it.

You should sell it and get an old iron headed POS.
