computer woes

Computer Gurus ,I have noticed my desk top at home has been running like sh*t and not unlike your boat or truck "you can sense" when somethings "not right" Had Rhonda run PC Doctor today and developed a message hd521-2w ....= "eminent hard drive failure" , "suggest you back up your files" any thoughts

I think I'll take this POS to the "Nerds" down town mannna~ for a little "tune up"

(just realized this should be somewhere else than projects but? any help ? )

Basically stated Tom, buy a new hard drive and transfer all of the good stuff to the new drive, not too tough, I would recommend picking up one of the small pocket drives, I use a 250 gb drive and just have all of my data replicate every day, no way to lose anything because I have it twice...

Your hard disk has a "fuzzy" spot on it, and will fail real soon...Not uncommon at all, sometimes if you run a scan disc on it you can relocate items on the drive to avoid the "pitfalls", called partitioning, I have had zero success with this, a new hard drive can be had for about a hundred bucks....If there are Guru's in your area, have them swap it out, but don't forget to relocate all of the info you want to save...Oh yeah and don't run Symantec anti virus if you're looking for a fast 'puter, it runs way too much BS and eats up horsepower...McAfee is the bomb for high performance computing and is safe IMO.

Thanks Guys ! Its amazing to me , when you spend as much time as we all probalbly do you really can tell when somethings not right , we work with a half dozen + desk tops and a few LTs here at home and at the shop , they are very much like you vehicle or family I belive (you know when theyre "sick" or not right ,this HP is normally "rocket fast" (and I'm not a patient person

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX),Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........
Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

PS - I'd like to add that when all else fails, you could call 'customer service' in some foreign country and be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car yourself!!!!

Help again !! somethings just not right here ....So I took my 2 year old HP home desk top to the "computer Guys" (local entity) , although it was working a little slow and had that message saying to "back up and copy files as your hard drive has a problem and may eventually fail " (or words to that effect ) It indeed worked well the morning before I dropped it off ! I told them of the message at the "service write up" and also told them that otherwize it worked well ,I was concerned and wanted to be premptive ! I ask that the first and formost they retrieve all my photos as I had no way to copy or back up same myself ! (mind you I have copius photo files and they are critical to what I do inspections and JBP) After a couple days I get a call "OK your going to need a new hard drive" (DUH) No problem says I , do it , just make sure and copy all my files and preserve them and "gitter done" please I hate working from my LT ! OK well , They dont have the H drive but they encouraged me to pick one up at Staples which I did and dropped off to them .Then I get a call " we put in the new drive but we're having trouble retreiving your files" I say hmmm wouldn't it have made sense to maybe try to copy the files BEFORE ?? you tore into my machine ,considering it was still working fairly well , oh well do what you got to do ... but if all else fails preserve my photos . I call today , "yes the new hard drives in and working , were loading windows and we were able to save all your files , there were alot and longer than we expected but we didn't lose them ,there will be an extra charge ". Ok says I ,I just need my computor back and "who hoo" happy you could save my pics ! Sooooo I get it home plug it in and this is what I got ONE HUMONGOUS FILE that says "OLD JET BOAT TOM" it has thousands of what you see below (prior to this they were organized into a few dozen folders) , not a clue what they are they all say "cluster xxxxxx " anybody have any thoughts here ?

Yes, The hard drive saved info into bad sectors, and that is what they retreived. Basically, incomplete files. Information is really not saved logically in a computer.

Yeasr ago, they used to "Map" hard drives and give you a list of the bad head/cylinder combinations when you bought them. When you formatted them, it was a manual affair using programs from DOS like Hsect, etc where this information was used. Took hours to format a 10 megabyte hard drive.

Bad Clusters are information located in those areas. Not a lot you can do but a "GOOD" nerd should be able to save most of it, provided you insisted on keeping the original hard drive. You need a better geek.

NO problem yet Tom, all is not dead. Just get the old HD before those turds lose it, hopefully you already have it. Then try a different data doctor and show him the Screen shot you posted. A good one should be able to link all or most of the files back together again.

Word of advise in the future bud, sounds like you have a TON on info on the thing. I mostly use my LT, but is linked to the DT. The DT has a second hard drive that was used only by Cindy and I to back up files to. The LT I'm using now Cindy bought a few months ago, and it's a replacement becuase the first one lasted 2 weeks and took a dump. She had Soooo much info from teaching and downloads it wasn't funny. Got the new one, and in a couple of hours all the info was back. Add a second HD to the desktop and configure it in your bios to park after like 5 minutes of inactivity. Once in a while, every week, month, backup the entire hard drive to it. They don't make these things to last like they used to.

Tom, you could also "parallel" your fried drive to the computer and attemp to retrieve your photos that way, the computer will not know anthing is wrong as long as you reconfigure the old drive to be the "slave", I use a pocket drive (250 gb ) for backing up files and love it, then at the beginning of the month I "back up" by moving all pictures for quotes and whatnot to a DVD, works like a champ, I had a laptop computer stolen from a jobsite a few years ago and it took me hundreds of man hours to "redo" the missing info.

Good luck....Isn't it funny how the guru's think it's the computer you want back? Screw the damn computer, just give me the F-ing data...

Kudos GT!! Exactly what I was leading to, but have a GOOOOOD Geek do it, lord knows what the first geeks may have done.

IN the files on his screen shot he is only gonna see assembly code on the new HD. if he opens those files. Or see "Unknown file type" or " cannot open file" errors. Someone has to recover the original files on the original hard drive. Many good programs out there to do it, or can help with it, but I would not recommend them unless you know very fool well how to use them.

Worse comes to worse, you can go through the code and at least pick up pieces of Word documents.

Hey Tom... I had a problem with my hard drive crashing, I saw it coming but waited to long to fix it .. and darn it took a crap, I had to install a new hard drive reinstall my main programs that I still had copy's for. after all that was done I took my old HD that crashed installed it in a case connected it to my "USB", then started to look for my Pics that I really wanted back. Then I found them to be corrupt.... SH......IT. Then a friend told me to try a program called "PC Inspector Smart Recovery 4.5. I gave it a shot.... much to my surprise I was able to recovery about 80%
of my pictures, I was not so concerned about my data. Just my 2 cents

Outlaw (and everyone else ) Thanks for the help and thoughts I will start "slugging " on this in the morning just wish ther was some one around that knew WTF they were doing , my Nephew say they basically gave me back a " file allocation table or Raw index" and It can be recovered and fixed by the right NERD

First and Formost !! Thanks to EVERYONE that pitched in with Computer Tech ,thoughts and Ideas !! Belive me I've said it before Thats what sets Socaljetboats apart ! the friendship and willingness to pitch in and help ! Soooo "FIND A BETTER NERD" was the operative idea here ! I called the retired guy (college instructor googled him) who used to do my repairs , at 8:00 (probably woke him up ) He recommended a different place , dropped off the old drive , this Cat dropped the Old drive into a device and within two hours had all my Pics restored to thier original folders and not only put them on two DVD's but loaned me a device to take home to "usb" this stuff back to my machine . I called the first guy and emailed him last nite , he didn't call back till around 10 am , by then I put a stop payment on my check , I offered to pay him for replaciing the hard drive but not the Data Flailex , he told me to "stuff it" , Cost me $ 175 at the new guy's (well woth it !) We have 6 DT's and 3 LTs , hes got a new customer . The first guys excuse .... he says I was too pushy and intimidated him and rushed him and thats why he turned back a crappy product ! I say he needs to go back to Nerdy school ! Tom
