Converter in a v-drive?

This may seem like a dumb question but I was wondering whenever you use a transmission in a v-drive do you use a converter or is there a special kind of coupling shaft made to bolt to the flywheel that runs directly into the transmission, in other words direct drive instead of fluid coupling you get with a converter, thanks.

No converter, sprnt car drive

The input shaft is special, normally a shaft over tube assy. is used, the shaft on a D.D. tranny is one solid piece. These transmissions can be shortened a bunch too, the Powerglide in my buddie DeMarco looks like a Lenco its so small...

What is a D.D. transmission? When you shorten the transmission I'm guessing this is a custom bellhousing or do they jusy cut the original shorter and tig weld a new adapter on? Thanks for the help one last thing, I know a powerglide is good for higher horsepower but what is the performance difference between it and a th400?

They remove the tailshaft houseing and put in a shorter output shaft, on mine anyway. I use low gear for no wake zones otherweise it'l idle about 15 MPH, also has reverse. They use the 350's and 400's for the heavier boats like cruisers. The Powerglides are not high HP trannys stock, they put in Hardened input shafts and stainles clutch houseings etc.
