Dyno Woes
« on: November 16, 2009, 07:43:00 PM »
so I was supposed to get the motor dyno'd today. it didnt happen

I had called around to a few places to see if they could get me in on short notice. mostly everyone was booked. Nordie suggested giving Universal Engine & Machine a call (yup, im callin them out just like that 8) )  ...they said no problem....."460? no problem! over transom headers? want it done on monday? no problem!!...bring it down!"  ...they never asked my name, number, set up an appointment or anything....made me go hmmmm  :sly:  :screwy:  ...so after work on friday i swung by the shop to check it out....real nice guy...took me back to show the dyno and said there was an engine on it that was almost done, the guy was bringing a different carb to test first thing monday morning and do 2-3 pulls and it would be free after that. I said i would call before i headed down to make sure things were still on track. he assured me that it wouldnt be a problem by saying that he would pull the other guys motor off the dyno to do mine.

so after the stress and crap i went through yesterday (see 'brad' thread)...i spent my entire birthday cussing at my motor....this morning i started gathering my stuff together in the garage....called the guy at about 9:30 to make sure everything was still on track before i loaded up the motor and all my crap and hauled it down there....his answer was "yes! yes! yes! we're ready to go, come on down, the dyno will be ready at 11!"

i get down there at 11am.....they just fired up the motor with the different carb...no big deal...im not in a rush.

the guy walks over to my truck and glances at my motor and says he cant do it because my headers wont work...he doesnt have the bell housing for the ford to connect to the dyno...and to come back later this week or next week and went back to dyno the other motor.

i said "sure, see you then" and left. i was in such shock this focker did this i didnt even realise it until i drove off. i drug all my shit down to his shop for NOTHING.   i was REALLY looking forward to doing this...

so i gave dan over at dan's driveline repair a call. super nice guy...he told me to swing by and see what he can do. he had the bell housing, but didnt have the hardware to make my headers work ...flex tube... and other various things (starter, elec water pump, etc)...he said if it was a chevy, he could have done it right then....but after chasin parts and modifying stuff, it would take 2 days and lots of labor...and he said he wouldnt be able to absorb those costs and all that hassle to do a 1 time dyno session it wouldnt be worth it (which i totally agree).

so lessons learned here is las vegas hates fords and dont go to universal for anything ever again.

so as it stands now....the motor is going in the boat and ill just tune it on the trailer.

That blows  You would think a dyno shop would have Ferd stuff anyway, it's not like they're uncommon! When I go to racing events it's not like I see only Chevys  ::)

Were you going there to try different parts, or just to get her dialed in? If you weren't gonna try a few different parts I say fock it anyways and run the biatch  >:D

The brightside is that you saved yourself a bunch of cash.  Plus you have an excuse to get out on the water.   Not a bad way to spend the day (if all goes well).

On the negative side , You want to know where your motor makes peak HP and Torque so you can properly choose a impeller.
Especially in a race application!

i got a call from dan over at dans drivelines today....he called over to kells automotive and found out they got the stuff to do it.

i take the motor to them thursday evening to give it a lookover so theres no surprises and from there im scheduled to get it on the dyno monday morning.

The name of the guy i talked to was Terry...he said he used to race jet boats "up north on the whitewater". i bet this guys got some cool old stories. cant wait.

the good thing was when i said "over transom headers" there wasnt crickets on the other end  ...finnally someone who does fords ....and knows jet boats ta boot.

funny i mentioned the kells dealio a little before and then dan came through...dan is a stand up guy from my understand and mentioned him in the u-joint thread...thats really cool about the old jet boat racer thing and no crickets on the over transom dealio...kells shop is scary looking so you know unless he has since moved...he is actually a cylinder head guru and while you are there you should imply about some 990's
