Engine paint options
« on: January 30, 2015, 08:50:40 AM »
HI All,

Im putting my LS motor together for the rogers, im throwing around ideas on what color to paint it. Originally since it is aluminum i was just going to clear it and run it. But i dont want to worry about heat causing the clear to yellow.

Now, some of you may have seen the red paint i did the valve covers and carb in. Im really considering spraying the block in this color, and leaving the heads natural.

Heres what the paint looks like

I am also thinking about doing the block Red like the LSX block and leaving all the machined surfaces bare like this:

Maybe paint it "aluminum" and clear it so it wont yellow?
Or theres always Chevy Orange

Note, i did paint the valve covers in the red candy paint like the carb

Ideas?

Thanks!

I honestly think painting the engine block the candy red color and leaving some of it bare metal would look amazing

Techline coatings makes a clear for bare metal.  Clear powder coat?  I love when the engine is painted to match the boat.

If it's a Chevy motor it has to be Chevy orange.

That is why you ceramic clear it after it's polished the first time, so you don't have to polish it indefinitely.

Looks really good.  Does that color match the hull?  Can't wait to see it installed

It matches the anodized rub rail. But the hull is white

The gas cap in this pic is painted with the same paint

I think it looks real good. Especially, with the heads not painted. Helps to break up the red and let's it stand out.

Nope. It's a spray paint called metal cast.

But I primed and cleared with automotive products

I love this paint! I'm using the"ground coat" then the metal cast and clearing with some automotive clear I had laying around from a detail gun from harbor freight. One thing I learned is the color coat loves to pull up but not really run, so it gets a little darker in areas.

Spray a few ghost light coats first. Then a wet coat or two. Also if you don't do the same amount of coats you will see a difference in color.

Here's my carb and gas cap came out great
