First time driving a boat ,Funny sh*t
« on: August 24, 2008, 02:37:05 PM »
Jorks brendella thred (with his steering backwards) had me remembering my 1st time out.

Last year I bought the Kona cause it was cheap and I had a wild hair.
I have never been in a boat!!!
After finding the lakemy buddy and I (both drag racers) figure hell no problem. Are sides are hurting after watching for 1/2 hr people try to back up and launch. Check the plug yep. I back up till it floats,
we switch places and I'm in the boat.Fire it back up...ahhh crap there's no #%*6 ing neutral!!! frwd.rev, circle repeat several times. Oh no rudder on the POS either. My bud comes staggering down the hill to the dock in tears laughing his ass off and tells to bring it to the dock. YA right!!! I tell him I'll get close and he can jump on. All this over open headers and other boats lining up for the entertainment!! I make a pass close to the dock an he makes a good Pete rose jump on the bow.
He had liberal sun tan lotion on and almost went off the other side. Now I'm laughing along with the rest of the people who are now cheering us on. We head toward the end of the no wake zone and WTF
waves are coming over the front, sides, front again. I'm thinking we're gonna sink!!My buddy is franticly triing to get his SECOND life jacket on!!! Yell at him what the hell!!??? He then (inbetween cussing my ancestery and anything else he cane think of) Tells me he CANNOT swim!!! I can not breath cause I'm scared and laughing histeriacly!!! Anyway I give it somre peddle and the nose comes up ,Cool!!! cruze aroud and throttle it ,let off the gas ...holy crap we're gonna drown again as a wall of water is tryiing to come over the back side. We servive that and procede to lauch the tool bag, ice chest , xtra life jackets, camara and everything else that was inside the boat while hauling ass around the lake.We are sunburned tired depressed and hungry cause we lost allthe stuff out of the boat. We head home realizing death is sometimes kind to stupid people.
Yep we at the lake the next day!!! LOL   Hope ya'll can enjoy this.  AA/Paul

grew up around jet boats & racing. Bought my first boat last spring. Launched with no problems. This is easy, its all coming back to me then I look over my shoulder for leaks and I'm pumping water big time. WTF, I forgot to reconnect the water line from pump to motor. Sue is already half way up the ramp with the trailer. I spot a beach area (about 3 ft of beach with shear drop off) about 50 feet or so and head straight for that giving it gas because I'm leaking water whether I idle, gas it, or shut down. Beach it with no problems but still leaking, switch on the bilge pump (which worked at home) and nothing. Swell!!!, (okay, I used a better four letter expletive) no I've got to reconnect line and header is smokin hot. Get burned or sink....get burned. Get line reconnected but still have to bail water from bilge (already over stringers and half way up battery. Sue comes down and brings the towels etc and I grab one soak it and put it between me and the header. The only thing I can find to bail with is a baby wipes box. I rip off the lid and toss the wipes and begin bailing. I finally got enough water out to trailer it and empty bilge and we go out for an hour on the water before coming home and getting a new bilge pump the next day. I will never forget that day (not to mention the nasty burn scar I have on my thigh lol)!!!

OK, Here goes nothing, I get my first jetboat at the ripe old age of 18 (18', 400#, balsa floored, bubble deck Renegade) this thing is a blank, no numbers, no holes cut, jet black, bad to the bone.

So I call my dad and tell him I need a 454 (he then owned an automotive machine shop) to put in the boat, let's just say over thought that one, ended up with a retired bracket racing 427 Chev., bought a whole bunch of stuff from swap meets and flea markets etc...Anyway finally get the pump set, the motor freshened up, new Bassetts, the friggen works, built a bench rear seat and two fiberglass buckets stitched in "burn the crap out of your ass dark maroon" looked really killer (did I mention the boat was black?). Thinking this is going to be badass, we got it running at the local fishbowl and it hauls ass, actually a little intimidating, only drove my dads "new" boat (1983 Galaxy "little dipper" with a 305 Chev. and a Merc. I/O).

So its time to go to the lake for the weekend (I'm 18) and took it to Lake Nacamiento towing it with my 1972 K5 Blazer 4X4, heading down 101 south at Greenfield, cross the overpass and realize I disobeyed rule #1 (of 50,000) make sure you, not your buddies latch the trailer onto the ball and hook up the chains, anyway, we hook the boat back onto the truck....So we get to the lake and it's 200*, the truck is threatening to overheat and we forgot the icechest (did I mention I'm 18?) so were just dying. We decide to camp on the beach (we call this rule #2) go launch the boat and broke rule #3,4 and 5, which are #3- bilge plug, not only did I not put it in, we forgot the damn thing!  #4- Safety gear (after this trip, is the new rule #1) no throw cushion, and no horn and the "gatekeeper" would not let me use the "I have a water ski therfore I have a paddle" defense, and don't forget the almighty "who the hell has the damn keys!" rule (#5).

So by the time we get on the water its dusk... one day down.

The next morning after going shopping for an ice chest and sun screen (rule #6), we go on the water for what we think will be awsome, because we have not given up all hope yet, we skied, tubed (on and old earthmover tube which is also black) we ate lunch and got back to the boat afterward and hopped on the deck (black + 105* + 1 hour = two smoking ass cheeks) we decide to head back until it cools off a little, we're cruising back and this dude in a cool flatbottom pulls up next to us and gives us a thumbs up, we wave then he takes off, so (18 years old) I hammer the hell out of the boat (which at this time has about three hours on it) and start to catch him, the boat had a second hand tach that only went to 5,500 RPM and it was on "M", sounded bitchen, then "it" happened, the boat took a couple of pretty good hops and the pump sucked air, needless to say what comes out must go back in, that big block blew up to the point there was nothing salvagable, not even a head. To make matters worse, got towed in by a 15 hp Johnson on a 12' aluminum, very humbling indeed...Learned a lot and went back every year since.....That was the coolest boat ever (at least I thought it was).

Still don't know why no one was injured or worse, someone was watching, and laughing his ass off....

I grew up with my dad always having  a fishing boat. First was a Rogue River boat, wood with Merk outboard in a well making it an outboard/inboard. then an old wood Cris Craft in a partnership, what a POS. He later got a 20' then a 24' Skipjack (great boats).  My first boat was Wizard, Eliminator Daytona, 30+ 454, Ski-Jet II circle boat, best of everything at the time. We put it together @ Nova Performance (Craig Millet"s shop). My experience as crew member put me in good company with Craig's racing Comp Jet and Jeff Bennett as Crew Chief.  When my bad boy was ready for the water we took it to Golden Shores in Long Beach right across from the Queen Mary. Fired her up and checked for leaks, all good. went out to the channel and started to break it in.  No one had ever thought of trying to turn a Daytona so that was first on our agenda, first turn was at about 30mph and it turned so hard and so flat I about fell sideways out of the seat.  Now with the motor well warmed up and all of 15 min. of time on it I thought we would start to bring up the speed.  All went well and now that I was ready for the hard turns handled that well too.  Then some guy in a flattie, dry stacks dual quads, looked like a pro gas boat without numbers on the side launches and comes out to play.  He wants to race!!!  Well I know better being the first time in the boat right?  HELL NO!!! We made pass after pass after pass, looong passes too. and this guy could not pull me by one bow eye.  He finally gave up.  I though I must be running out of gas by now so I come in same time he does.  He drives his boat up on the trailer, throws his jacket in the back of his truck and left uber pissed that he couldn't beat a stupid single 750dp, log exhausted JET.  Glad he didn't stick around he would have found out it was my first time driving one too.

My first jet boat , I bought from my beer drinking neighbor .. ........ Spent a grip on new upholstery and the cool jet boat stuff ;D My friends were buggin me lets take it out ???  Hell why not....... let my buddy drive it , launched it from the rotary park and hauled ass up river to the dam..

got to the dam and it was beer drinking time ;D I was in heaven , wow my own boat you guys know the feeling im talking about....... After a few boat sodas i heard   OH SHIT  :o

I turned to the back and saw about a foot or more of water ,  yeah we were sinking. Hit the bilge pump and grabbed another beer......If its going down i am to..  luckily that new bilge pump sucked it out quick.....Needless to say my heart was pounding thinking im going to lose everything i just worked so hard for , but it turned out fine . cruised down river and then it started popping in the carb and exhaust So we trailered it.... it turns out the dizzy cap came loose that was it.....

Yeah guys i actually had a boat that ran ;D the Transome cover was loose so that is why i took on so much water , that problem was fixed that day ;)

Three months later i get divorced....Yep lost the boat :banghead:

That was four years ago.. i am just trying to get back that feeling that i once had , and the Bahner will be the one doing it ;)

I got to take my boat out one time and one time only.......I never got to drive it ( i was drinking )
Maybe now you guys see why im so anal about it being done right the first time......

Im not losing this one.......................

Man that's some funny shit  :D

I honestly don't remember the first time I drove a jet boat... I have alot of stories but no "first time".... my firstweekend on the water at Martinez was when I was 2 weeks old  ;D As soon as I could reach the steering wheel is when  I started driving.... and as soon as I could reach the foot pedal with my booster seat I was driving by myself. My pop's used to tell me.... "Don't go over the 4 on this guage (the tachometer x1000) and I used to love scaring him taking up to 5200  ;D

I got towed in by a sailboat once........out of gas

Last week I watched a nice wakeboard boat with all the bling get towed in by a lakelice. Laughed my ass off but also thanked the boat gods it wasn't me that time.

My first time driving a jet was Sacramento delta in one of those narrow friggin things they think are wide enough to ski on. I went to turn a 180 and WTFO, the boat just slowly turns straight into the shore at 35mph. Wasn't my boat and I was damned if I was going up on the bank, so I shifted into reverse and floored it. Lucked out that time. No wave over the transom, no mud into the intake (at least none that stayed in) and didn't clog the cooling lines or block and the bow just barely kissed the reeds on the shore. Had to throw away my shorts tho - they were all stinky and gooey.

I also just picked up my first jet boat this year. Practicly stole it from the guy for $700. Got it running took it out with my now ex-brother in law all was good. About the 6th time out spun a rod bearing. After that $600 repair all was good untill I started showing off. I ended up pumping most of the oil out between the new torquer intake and the block. Luckily no damage from that one. The best part is blowing away $60,000 wake board boats and $20,000 bayliners and all for under $2,000. ;D
