I havent upgraded to the Hero 3 yet. I know very little about them and the issues they have been having.

The Gopro's I use for my videos are the GoPro HD Hero's. I shoot everything in 720p @ 60fps. The major reason I would upgrade to the Hero3+ is for the ability to shoot at 1080p @ 60fps. The reason I shoot at 60fps is so if I just happen to catch a shot that deserves to be put into slow motion, it comes out smooth and not choppy. Yes, I sacrifice the HD quality, but lets be real here - you guys are watching these on your cell phones, tablets and computer screens, not in a iMAX theater.

I wouldn't recommend a GoPro for family pictures/video. They are mostly designed for action sports. They dont have a way to view what your shooting or review what you have shot. Yes, they offer a LCD backpack for this, but its another $80....and its worthless when shooting in daylight. Its very hard to see, even more if its in the waterproof case.

Yah I have read a few reviews stating what you guys have said. if I remember correctly one review stated the new 3+  when synced with the app on a smart phone you can review and edit videos and post directly from the app to YouTube and what not. Which is a new feature for the 3+.  Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it.

I bought the white. The lowest end one. $200 with a 32gb class 10 card. I bought it for the same reason you want to get yours for, boating and dunes. My opinion is unless you are looking to make professional movies. The low end one should be more than enough. And the app for the phone works pretty good, you can view the image, start and stop the recording, adjust between still and video, and view all of your images and videos from the app.

As so stated above a GoPro of any kind would not be in my top 5 choices for a family camera. Now an action lake, river, desert video and camera yes. I have a hero 3 the silver edition which is the middle and its not that far off from the black, the major thing you get upgraded in the black is the wifi remote. That alone is $70. As far as spec and what not I got the silver and use it with my cell as the "wifi remote" it works perfect and it is "live" it has a good 2-5 second delay, plus if you put it under water while recording the video keeps going but it won't display on your cell any more.
Overall I am pretty happy with it, I forget to use it more than I do actually use but I haven't used a camera other than my cell in 7+ years. Haha

Hmm don't know why I'm having a hard time posting on my app but like I was typing before I got cut off, If I drop to the standard 1080 res and narrow the view which is a breeze on the phone app it pretty much eliminates the fish eye and the software I use on my comp has a filter that eliminates it completely. It's pretty trick. I'll be filming my trip to the dunes this weekend and try to make a video that won't put you guys to sleep.
