Kids riding in boat

We are going to the river next weekend and I was wondering what some of the guys with little kids have done with over the transom headers. My daughter is 2 1/2 and it will be her first river trip. I was thinking ear plugs but was just curious if anyone has a better idea. The headers on my boat are wet also. Thanks!

Ear plugs are an excellent idea. OT headers are too loud for adults to be around too, but no one seems to care about their own hearing.
Obviously at her age she needs to be watched constantly for both burning and drowning. A life vest at her age will not be adequate protection for either. Get her into swimming lessons NOW ! It is very easy when they are this young to teach them how to save themselves from drowning, not so much from getting a header burn because Dad wanted a water rocket.
I'm not really trying to be an asshole, I have just seen what Bassett looks like when it is burned into you girlfriend's Mom's back because she got too drunk one weekend and fell back onto the motor. Also had to rescue my own soon from water three times over his head when he slipped into the lake from shore without his vest on. He was holding his breath and paddling like a mofo but he wasn't panicking. No one knew he was in the water until I found him at the back of the boat in 6' of water. He was about 3.

Oh yeah, keep them well hydrated. This is another big deal. They can get very sick from the heat very fast. They don't have near the cooling system or the reserves that bigger kids do. You really do need to pay extra attention when they are this young. Beers can always be consumed after you are off the water.

A lot of truth in what Glass Cutter said. It's a full time job with kids, someone has to keep an eye on them 100% of the time. My kids grew up boating on Parker strip. They both water skied on Parker at 4 years old. Then again Parker was different place in the early 70's.
No alcohol allowed when boating with kids.

Okay..... Lets slow it down...... I was a river rat at the age of 6 weeks.... Raised on jet boats. I am now 37 years old with an 11 yr old son and a 6 yr old daughter.... Here's my two cents.... Even if they know how to swim, they KEEP THEIR LIFE JACKETS ON! My 11 yr old never argues about it when the boat is in motion.... Actually prefers to have it on due to the speed. (Yep, we have a fast boat... Or so me and my kids think... My hubs is 'All Fired Up', so you can determine for yourself ) LOL!!!
I do allow both my kids to take their jackets off on the beach... But my daughter must always have it on if she is waste deep in the water. Keep in mind until this year she was NOT ALLOWED to take it off, even on the beach to play!!!!! It only takes a second for them to slip away!!! They both can swim... But you can ever be too careful! I have a client whom has cut a child in half on their prop.... Enough said!
As far as jet boat coolness.... LOL!!! Ive tried the squishy ear plugs, but they fly out... So here ya go!!!!! These have always worked with no probs at all!!!

Try the ear protection that has the foam ends on the half moon. As they get older they listen to you less and it must be caused by hearing loss. On the subject of life jackets, all kids need to wear one, and any adult that cant swim needs one to. Over the years I have taken many people for a ride and now I ask new people If they can swim. There's more non swimmers on the lake then you would think.

Ill tell you guys what this might be a lil off subject but... Last weekend I had the opportunity to take a 8 year old boy and his dad for a ride in my boat. Dad put ear muffs and of course a life jacket on the boy. Dad also let the kid sit in the front. Of the 3 days of racing and cruising up and down the river the best time I had was the smile on that kids face when I stabbed the throttle. That made my whole weekend. For my opinion for kids in boats... I'm sure I'll get some chet for this but if you know my back ground I was raised no different... Life jackets are a must.... Ear plugs/muffs are a must.... My kids Will ride in my open header boat regardless of there age. I think responsibility is key when it comes to this. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN! So end of story Dads and Moms go out and put some smiles on your kids faces safely with your loud open header jet boats!!'

Life jackets are not only a must but it's the LAW with children 12 and under they must have a life jacket on WHILE the boats in MOTION.

Yup I agree" as a kid my first Winter Nationals at the Pomona Fairplex and no ear plugs changed my life for the better , I pulled my self away from gangs and drugs and started Working on cars and motorcycles. So much to Dennis"s point, life is too short not to have a blast on the water"" just be cautious and aware of your surroundings 😎👍🍻

I took my daughter out when she was 8 months old on the boat now she is 2 and is just hooked she loves the boats and can't get enough of it when we get to the lake or river she puts her life jacket on and doesn't take it off until we get back in the truck it's definitely a full time job watching her but it's worth it to me because she has nothing but smiles the whole time as long as your responsible driving the boat and watching out for others take her out and have a great time

Took natallie out for the first time last june or so. She loved it she was just abotu 1 year old.

Now that shes 2 and talking more. Every boat she sees she points to and says boat. At home she just wants to sit in the boat and play around with it. Hell she even makes vroom vroom noises.

When we are out on the boat, she HAS to be in the drivers lap helping to drive. Im trying to find a picture.

That said. She has not been in my boat yet. Its just way to loud and she wont wear the ear pro. When she will wear the ear pro, she can ride in it.

But having a kid out there is a SHIT ton of work. but rewarding work

Me and the old lady and daughter would have went on a quick cruise too if we had muffs for the lil one lol i got back to the trailer after you said i could ride with you and my gf was like oh thatvwoulda been fine i was bummed but next time we see you maybe you could squeeze us in im hopin to have my boat done by the next big trip but we will be at riviera off and on see you on the next one.

I'm not a great swimmer... I would 'barely' be able to save myself ,let alone you

I couldn't agree with you more. Your boat, your rules. After doing more research I was wrong with the age requirement. The correct age is 13, and not all states follow the USCG regulations

this is true! i went on a snorkeling trip once....deckhand asked how many of us didnt know how to swim....half the boat raised their hands.....blew my mind. it was a snorkeling trip! since then....i always ask.

Well said Dennis.

My daughter has been in my CP sense she was 2 yrs old, always with OT headers, up until last year they were wet headers, now that my daughter is older and understands to stay the hell away from the headers they are now set up to only run dry.
Some good ear protection and a GOOD vest that fits your child PROPERLY is the key.
Make sure its a life vest that will roll the child on their back if something unforeseen was to happen.
