Big lake means potential for big waves. Personally never been to Powell, been to Mead a bunch though.

Stay away from the tour boats. Those things make huge wakes and beached my dad's buddy's boat. If it was a jet it would have sunk it. There's a bunch of markers around the lake to let you know where you are. They go by color though so get a map. Otherwise you'll love it. Are you camping on the beach ?

I did Lake Powell last year out of the bull frog marina. Two things about the lake.... The lake is at elevation....so on the first day I thought something was wrong with my boat because it seemed way down on power. It was my first trip so I was concerned about getting lost, and being able to navigate the long distance from bull frog to rainbow bridge. (The must see of the lake) so I paid $10 for an iPhone app that allowed me to use the app to constantly monitor where I was on the lake to my exact location. It used the GPS function of the phone with a google map overlay and a "red dot" that tracked my every move on the lake. Does NOT use cell phone to work, no cell signal was needed. Loaded with mapped destinations of things to see on the lake and their exact location made it the best $10.00 I ever spent. There are no lake trail markers to guide you to these sites so I kept the app opened connected to my sig lighter at all times all day. Really useful, as I also used it to find gas on the lake. The best part.....they just updated the app, and now it is FREE. Also, lake is really down so escalante is pretty short, a far cry from when my Dad explored it in
the 70's. The lake uses bouys to mark the deep parts of the lake, which doesn't always mean "the center". Powell is different at the bull frog end because it acts more like a really wide river. I did not experience any large waves even with houseboats running around. Elevation can cause it to get cool in the evening so bring jackets. I went in July and we did get a storm come through at the end of daylight coming back to marina. I think Bull Frog is under construction this year due to low lake level. Get out to every cut in to explore..... Super cool to see shear cliffs over your head. Bring GoPro if you have it. Lots of good opportunity to use. Get out early as there is lots to explore. Have a great time!

What's the app called?

Wind storms pop up frequently. I grew up on that lake. Don't go early summer/spring. The risk of a storm is too great for jets. Flash floods are frequent that time of year. I only take my jet august-sept. Early october is ok but weather starts changing. Definitely get a map. Real easy to get lost and bring lots of fuel as stated. I wouldn't go alone if you are in a jet. Don't be dumb and camp in the channel. Lake is low so good sandy beaches should be easy to find up some of the canyons. Where are you launching from? I can recommend some great canyons with low traffic. Also, because the lake it low you need to be vigilant. Shallow rocks are everywhere! And not all of them are marked. The park is great but they suck at marking rocks. Most rocks are marked by people ie jugs/water bottles. Just be careful. Real e asy to tunmrn a good plan into a bad trip. Keep up on the weather regardless of the month. Stay out of the channel during the peak of the day in a jet. Roughly 1200-1700. Wind easily creates white caps everyday. If you dob get flash flooded stay calm. Depending on if you are in a waterfall area even if it starts raining a little be prepared to leave. Stake all your belongings down on the beach and take whats necessary. DO NOT GO INTO THE CHANNEL! YOU WILL SINK! Stay in the arm of a canyon and wait it out floating around. Take tons of pics! Out of all the houseboat trips I was along for growing up on Powell the best trip I ever did was 2 yrs ago 3 of us packed everything we needed to live in my buddies 21ft shockwave (it is an I/O so a lil different) but we saw the whole lake except the last 50 miles of the San Juan river arm (due to fuel) and of course I'm sure a cove here and there cuz face it the lake is massive. But we put 40 running hrs on the boat in 7 days and went from basically the dam to what once was Hite marina which is just the river now. We had a couple bad weather days but mostly good. We bought a hand held radio that could pick up the weather forecast but could also call the marinas for help if need be..get a map so u know where your at..as stated watch the tour boat wakes cuz I've heard of them even turning over houseboats...be safe and have fun like stated Powell is amazing I've been out of the country and would still rather go to Powell your gonna see some amazing sites
