Need help from the socal boys
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:50:47 PM »
Let me start from the beginning. Had the boat for three years and never had a problem this thing was a turn key every time. Last year put a hydraulic diverter and polished the transom cover. Only took it out once last year (lack of water in nevada) and saw there was a leak. I thought that the guy that polished it burned through the silicone on the cover and that was the leak but tonight when I pulling the cover off I saw the crack. I'm sure that is where the water is coming from. My question is what do I do. Can I tig the crack. How or why it happened. How can I fix it. Do I need a new jet. The wife and boys love the boat and don't want to see it go but don't want to spend a fortune on fixing it but i don't want to see it on the bottom of the lake. Any help is appreciated. I know you boys will steer me the right direction. Thanks

You will probably have to replace the suction housing I had a cracked similar to that on my boat and had to replace it

While that could likely "technically" be repaired,  it's in a bad spot and I suspect there are more underlying issues.

Find a new suction housing and build a fresh pump.

I'm all about fixing things, but at the same time, the time investment that that housing needs exceeds common sense. If that pump was the holy grail, I would dig deeper.

You can find a housing pretty easily.

Thank you wiskey and gt. If anyone has a housing that they would sell it would be great. This el nino is our only option of having water up here and I do want to sit in my garage and watch it pass.

That's a good one!  I'm thinking that is from the hammering of unloading and loading the pump.  Or possibly from jumping it.  It's possible it could be a loading issue.  Where the pump runs out of water and RPM revs higher.  Then the pump gets a gulp of water and the loads up, everything is shocked.

The impeller will probably also have cracks and the shaft splines twisted.

That's going to be a pretty hefty bill.

Thanks flusher. Found a housing with the same numbers as mine on ebay for 250 so I'm going going to snatch that up and start tearing it apart so see what else is going on.

Be careful buying used pumps, you could end up with a pile of useless parts.

Call Jim Brock Shop cyclone speed and marine or Greg shoemaker at GS Marine you can also use a Berkeley suction housing as well I think it would be cheaper for you to replace then to weld it

Does the auction have pictures of wear ring area?  If the wear ring has spun out or the impeller has gouged into the step, it's scrap.

Is the bore for the thrust bearing in good condition?  If damaged, pass.

Look all around the supporting structure for the thrust bearing for cracks as well as the areas in the pictures you and whiskytango posted.

Good luck,

Joe

From what I can see in the pictures, looks decent.  Looks like a shouldered wear ring, probably bronze.  One of the ribs has been ground above the "o" and the "a" in your last picture.  Don't see that as being an issue if you don't.

I was thinking more along the lines of untrue mating surface between the bowl and suction housing. Has the bowl been "cut".

I have also seen this type of fracture when silicone sealer is used instead of gaskets.

Gt can't tell if silicone was used until it comes apart but I can't see any coming from the sides and what do you mean but cut and how can I tell.

That's not the case here.  Had that been the case, it would have placed your impeller shaft in a tremendous find which would have locked it from the get go.  Then, you would have heard the dying bearings complaining.

Granted, anything can be destroyed by sledge mechanics with a 3/4" impact.  Dominator suction housings are easily twice as thick as an early Berkeley housing.  A Dominator housing can tolerate a lot of misalignment before it fails.

Your housing broke ahead of the wear ring, not at the inside corner between flange and diameter outside of the wear ring (the thinnest spot), indicating that the mechanical joint between the suction housing flange and the bowl was sound.  Also, the cracks are primarily radial and not along the intake flange had it been an issue with sealing the intake gasket.

That kind of damage is the result of repeated sudden loading of an unloaded pump.  This is usually caused by the shape of the transition between the hull and intake or it is the result of driver technique.
