Ok fellas, most of you know I'm in Las Vegas now, working as a project manager on a multi billion dollar project.  Here's the details so y'all can make an informed decision.

1. State job- HATED it, never hated any job like I hated that one. BUT, it's secure, I make good money, I don't have to do a whole lot(basically show up) & I can freakin' retire from there if I decide to.

If I stay @ the state I get to keep my house in Bakersfield, nice house, pool, great 'hood.

2. Vegas job- I like what I do, it's a challenge and it's rewarding, there is bullshit to this job, just like all jobs. The money is really good, but the state of construction is shitty at best.  I'm good on this project until Nov/Dec 09, after that it's anybody's guess.

If I stay @ the Vegas job it would mean moving here, something I just can't get my head around no matter how hard I try.

SCJB is already in the process of moving to vegas . Right Brad  :-\

Good luck Skip , This day and age , work is a roll of the dice . I would go for stability and ride it out for as long as you can . Unfortunaly . unless I find something more consistant , I'm gonna stay where I'm at . I pretty much get to do whatever I want and am rarely questioned by the big guy so , Yeah , it's a tough spot to be in .

Is there another position at the state level that you could move into that you would hate less and still have the security?

If not, and Vegas offers the ability to make a living while looking for something more secure, I'd take vegas.

But then again, I have a hard time moving (been in the same house 17 years)  ;D

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Unfortunately I missed the QAP exams for the positions that I'd like to promote to, QAP's will come back around in about 12-16 months.  Vegas does afford me the ability to live while  I look, but so would the state. Thanks guys, keep them coming, give me your views.

I know some people who just got back from Boulder City.    He is thinking of trading property near Lake Tahoe for property in Boulder City.  I think he is crazy but he knows both areas well and likes em both.

OK Skip, gonna catch a bunch of crap for this but her goes.

Bakersfield/Cali. is more than likely going to fare the economical downturn better than Vegas, always has, if you have even a small sense of security at your present home, then the answer is clear, bad time to sell a home anyways...If you were to buy a home in Nevada, who's to say you won't hate that more?

There is BS in every job out there, it depends on what you want to do when you grow up  :sly:

I have had numerous chances to move to southern Oregon, unfortunately I have on the "Golden Handcuffs", meaning $130K a year and am used to having work year round, so the culture shock alone may kill me early....Although I just walked in the door from work :banghead: :banghead:

Good luck in any decision you make, I feel your pain....

I've learned one thing in life and that's that you only have one.  Which option will make you love life better? Or will lead you in the direction of living the life you want to live. Money, homes, size of your boat is not what I mean ether.  What life will put the best smile on your face for the long run.  Project management jobs are by definition temporary, bad jobs by definition are bad.  I'd do the temp thing, be happy.  New jobs will be there in 09. Bad jobs are always there for the taking because there bad.

If you have kids I say security trumps all else for the next 6-8 years while the economy sorts itself out.  Funny thing about security is that you can't buy it, but working for the govt. comes pretty close these days.   Plus govt. jobs usually leave a lot of time to do things on the side.    Just my .02

Funny thing happened today after I wrote my .02 on the issue.  The president of my firm told us that there will be no paychecks after 12/10.  Basically the doors will close.  I've been there 32years. I felt liberated.  Within an hour I found three firms looking for someone with 1/4 of my experience. Strangey I didn't feel bad, I felt like I had a reason to leave my mentor and the firm I loved most of my life.  I will now go out and make the career I wanted all along.
