Lots of us have tons of parts, tools, and not to mention our boats in our garages. I sat in my garage and just looked around the other day and had a very sobering realization of how much crap is in my garage. If someone decided to ravage my place, they would have a field day.

So I started looking for a video surveillance system and I found this killer deal at Costco.

its $299 plus a $15 non-member fee (I'm a Sam's guy)

I priced out just the DVR box and its being sold for at least $350 at several places online, no cameras included. This one comes with everything you need for a great price. Has 60' cables, 4 cameras with 30' night vision, 320gb drive for months of archiving video, etc.

what I like about it is I can tap into the cameras straight from my phone anywhere at any time. (Android App)...also, if I set up motion detection alarms, it will send an alert (email) to my phone. I feel this is more proactive then coming home to find your shit is gone, and only a tape to review as you watch it drive off.

There is more things I will be doing to put the lock down on my new place as I am pretty isolated on the very NW tip of town with no immediate neighbors. More to come later...

I think you missed the part where i agreed with what you said, but this system offers a solution...

if i get an email notification of motion detected, i can tap into the system immediately and see whats going on. If its not a false alarm, a call to the local authorities can be made.

yes, better locks, bolts, etc will be done as well.

im all for the survellance system! and also fort knox method! reason being my co-worker had his wallet stolen while at the gym the other day, and he get a phonecall from his g/f cause her purse was also stolen...from her truck, anyway she was on her way to pick her stuff up some guy found the stuff in the street in front of his house.....turns out the guy had a survellance system installed, and got the guys faces, and also the truck they were driving....so my buddy decided to walk around the guys neighborhood, but no truck...walks into the next neighborhood, and lone behold theres the truck plates match everything....authorities handled it, guess what side of town brad? the gym was on durango and 95 just so you know! your pretty smart about shit to begin with....by not telling people you are leaving town, and stuff like that....just do your thing and keep a low pro...also keep your garage closed as much as possible.....especially when i drop the hydro off!

well i dont disagree with the cameras if you shot a burgler give the gun to your wife just say the theif atacked your dog did his job  but most of all when in vegas do what the casinos do film everything

I've had trouble in the past with the side door of a garage. Some pos tried to break into my garage. He broke the 1" dead bolt easily. Luckily for me I had my Snap On Roll cab backed up against it and he couldn't force the door open enough to squeeze by.  I found these badazz brackets that I lag screwed into the studs around the door frame and it allowed me to put a 2x4 across the door at top and bottom of the door. I haven't installed it on my current house because door is in the back yard and theif would have to get past my 3 dogs and then push my boat over the wheel chocks to get the door open. I will have to soon because the gap will open up when I finally get a place diverter and install it. Anyway, found the brackets at Holmes Depot. They were pretty cheap.

Your door should be a solid door, most codes require egress doors to be solid. If that's the case, add some lateral stiffeners, think the gates to a castle, big ass board to keep them secure.

Measure inside to inside of your door frame, basically the width of your door. cut either a 4X4 or some square tubing to this dimension, go from the outside with the carriage bolts, one set about 1/3 way down from the top, the other set 1/3 up from the bottom. BOLT these to your doors, add some heavy brackets, U tubing works great, so that the opening is facing up. When your door is closed you simply place a board, or piece of tubing across the entire door jamb, you'll be securing to the king & jack studs on both sids of the door. They won't get in, even if they remove the hinges, the door isn't coming off unless your cross pieces are out of the slot.

Brad, if you go to any good door supplier you can ask for NRP Hinges. They have non removable pins which are secured by a set screw which is concealed on the inside of the hinge when it is closed.

Move to Iowa.... I don't lock the doors except at night when I go to sleep.  My theory is out in the country they could disassemble the house to get what they wanted before anyone even noticed they were here.  Of course if they do break in and steal anything they better take the time to find all the guns because I will find them and Hogs don't leave no evidence and I don't care what they showed on CSI.
