Title: Questions:
Post by: Hava Al on November 11, 2007, 02:01:52 PM
First is it bad for the panther to run it without water? And has anyone re-chromed Basset headers? mine look pretty bad with the rust forming. Any ideas what it runs$ ?

I asked the same question a few months ago and they said "jet hot" them so i checked it out and it was something like $300 + what color you want +s/h.
jethot.com and you can do a estimate online and they will mail it to you with info and a dvd or something ;D
But well worth it.

Can't help you with the Panther, the headers you can have re-chromed, it won't be cheap, but they'll look nice. The question is, how will you keep this from happening again?

whats to late ?

Rust is already forming ::)

Chrome sucks too much to take care of.

Just coat them and dont worry about oil and fingerprints or anything else that gets burned on to them forever

I have checked with a reputable chrome and they wanted rigth around $700.00 to re-chrome a set of Bassett Headers. Here is the kicker! They would not guarantee the work for several reasons, one being their are used and contaminated two that they are in an enviroment with water, three they get hot and so on and so forth.

If you are going to take them someplace and get them chromed find out what steps they take in the preparation. And long before you take them down inspect them for soft or weak areas, I'd hate to spend any money on any parts, just for them to fall apart shortly their after.

A new set of Bassetts are around a $1000. give or take so its no small investment, dollar for dollas I'd rather by a new set for the additional $300 than on a re-chrome job.

If you can get them jethot coated for $300.00 and don't mind the color compared to chrome that sounds like a deal to me.

Another coating very close to Chrome and heat resistant is the same that Edelbroch puts on their products called Dura-Shine. A place in OC called Specialized Coatings does this same finish. I don't know how much they want to prep and do a set of headers but it may be worth checking out.

is that coating the stuff that looks like brushed alum.? I think that would clean them up....but now I'm having a bigger problem....the motor with charged batterys doesn't want to turn over....and I tried a couple of times to get 'er to fire but it just doesn't want to turn over...I have new batterys.I'm wondering if the damn starter took a dump.....if it's not one thing it's a woman....... :-\

How long has it been since its started?

If you pulled the plugs out and put a wrench on the front of the motor does it rotate fairly easily?

Check that your getting spark?

The biggest thing to be careful of is a motor thats seized and putting a fresh starter and battery to it  you might accidentally bend a rod or hurt something in your rotating assemble.

You might want to spin your oil pump with a drill motor. Before and after checking your oil. Make sure afterwards you don't have a milkshake. Sometimes you have condensation in the block. If the motor is hard to turn over by hand I have seen some people put Marvel Mystery Oil in the combustion chamber to help free it up.

Once you know it spins free, you know your batteries are good, you have plenty of oil / lubrication and your getting spark. I guess the starters all thats left.

As far as the Panther goes, I have no clue on a Panter specific but I have always been told never to run any pumps out of the water. I hear a majority of wear occurs due to running dry. I'd check with Tom @ JBP, I hear he even created a Panter Conversion kit thats really nice and works well.

it fired a couple of days ago but still turned slow....I don't think I'll try running anything without water running in it....I'm going to pull the plugs tomorrow and see what happens....I know it's a high compression motor but I also know the guy I got it from never had this problem....and no I can't talk to him....he passed on in Dec. that is why I ended up with the boat...he willed it to me.....(I wonder if he's laughlin' at me right now...) lol ;D
Title: Re: Questions:
Post by: Jetaholic on November 11, 2007, 07:28:01 PM
If it fired a couple of days ago then you can be certain the motor is not seized.

I would try replacing the starter. High compression does a number on 'em.

Post by: Hava Al on November 11, 2007, 07:33:46 PM
now I could be wrong but don't they make a starter for high compression engines? More than likely for racing apps...and priceid to match........what gets me is there are 2 batterys in this thing ....
Title: Re: Questions:
Post by: wutwzat on November 11, 2007, 08:37:53 PM
What is the motor? Ford, Chevy, Olds?
And where is the starter located? Is it where it would be on a car or is it top mounted thru the bellhousing? Also how many bolts hold it in place?

I think the High Torque starts start about $200 and go to about $300, thats why its a good idea to eliminate all other problems first. You don't wanna drop two to three bills to have the new starter just go click click click...

The usual first thing to go on a starter is the solenoid, they are cheap and easy to replace.
Pull the starter and bench test it first, cheaper than anything else, and easier  ;D  then you know for sure!

I met a guy at the big three swapmeet last year and he quoted me three hundo to re-chrome boat headers!!! His number is 323-585-3865 his name was Danny Gaitan and they send everything to mexico where they still use the good chemicals to chrome shit! The name of the company is "The Bumper Shop Inc." I saw numorous things they had chromed and it all looked great. They do a lot of hot rod stuff.

if you have a little time, try ebay for the starter by a seller named a1truck.  I've purchased a couple of marine starters and alternators from him and they've all been great products.  Here's the link to his auctions-

I emailed this company last night and I just got the response....quick little bunnys they are........

We really appreciate your interest in JET-HOT.  This is a follow-up to
our instant response to your inquiry.  This e-mail has your PRICE
ESTIMATE and some technical information you need to have.

JET-HOT is the number one supplier of ceramic coated headers in
the world.  We invented this coating and have over 20 years of
experience in the science of engine exhaust technologies.  We also want
to let you know that we just sent you, by priority mail, information
that should help you make your decision.  You should have this within a
few days.  This packet contains several independent technical articles,
a JET-HOT 20 page brochure, and a video.

Technical benefits are as follows :  Looks great, reduces
under-hood temperatures significantly and more, keeps pipes up to 40%+
cooler, Gives you 1-3% extra horsepower, extends average header life by
at least 10 times, and improves safety in an accident by reducing the
probability of fireballing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We can coat almost anything you want including manifolds, oil pans,
springs,                                      and a whole lot more!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The price to coat a set of boat style headers (with the collectors no
longer than 20") , in&out with the sterling silver finish, is $330+s&h
back. If the headers have water jackets, we would not coat in the water
jackets. Add $20 for the  flat black, blue or grey finish. The NEW
 copper
finish is also $20 more. The NEW SEMI Gloss black finish, flat white &
flat red  are $50 more ( please note: the semi gloss black part must be
coated in&out). The SEMI Gloss black has a 1100F temperature tolerance.
We'll need them here for 3-5 days plus shipping time back. The NEW SEMI
Gloss black, red & white will take 8-10 days. If the parts are chrome or
nickel plated, add $50 to the total and 2 days for stripping.I will send
you our full information package to get you all the coating benefits in
greater detail.

Jet Hot also carries a coating called Jet Hot 2000. This coating runs
 up
to a temperature of 2400 degrees. It does NOT provide as much
 insulation
as the other coatings. The Jet Hot 2000 only comes in a flat black, blue
or grey finish and has a gritty texture on the outside. The Jet Hot
 2000
runs $100 more than the sterling silver finish  . This coating takes 3
days longer than the sterling silver process. We suggest Jet Hot 2000
 for
set ups with nitro,turbos,etc.

Jet Hot has recently introduced some NEW coatings which are shown on
 the
web site. The  newest is called EXTREME STERING (MC-15). The EXTREME
STERLING is a coating that is very similar to the Jet Hot 1300 sterling
silver but has a slight duller finish and has an orange peel look. The
texture of the coating isn't as smooth as the sterling silver, there is
some slight texture.  This coating can handle 1450F without
discoloration (vs. the sterling silver which is 1300F). After 1450F,
 the
coating will become dull/grey but will not fail till 1700F. After
 1700F,
the coating would blister/flake off(vs. sterling silver which fails
above 1300F). It has the same corrosion resistance as the sterling
silver. It slightly better insulation qualities than the sterling
 silver
coating. The Extreme Sterling coating will add $50 more than the 1300
sterling silver  .

If you want to get the silver finish but are running high exhaust
temperatures, the Extreme Sterling is a good option.

The Extreme Sterling coating is a good option when running a turbo,
nitro, super charger, etc.

All parts receive a 3 year unlimited guarantee that covers chipping,
peeling, cracking, discoloration, rusting.  New parts also get a
lifetime rust through warranty as well.

Please ship your parts to:
Jet Hot Coatings

Pascagoula MS 39581
       or
1840 West Drake Dr
Tempe AZ 85283

I'm going to go with this..............

IMO RE headers ,rechroming vs replaceing is almost not cost effective .time you strip bead blast treat and rechrome or recoat you have some "bank" in the project. Re preserving them, mist some wd on them and wipe down after use this is about the best you can do . RE The jet out of water, "in a perfect world" the impeller shaft is suspended for and aft between rear bearing and front bushing and thus so is the impeller (has clearance between the blades and pump body), so theoretically there is no contact between impeller and "wear surface", in or out of the water. All bets are off however if bearings and/or bushings are worn. Especially on Panther the Stnls Impeller will carve into the housing like a "boring tool". Sso key here is "is your pump tight in the first place" ? Tom ;D
