First is it bad for the panther to run it without water? And has anyone re-chromed Basset headers? mine look pretty bad with the rust forming. Any ideas what it runs$ ?

Can't help you with the Panther, the headers you can have re-chromed, it won't be cheap, but they'll look nice. The question is, how will you keep this from happening again?

I heard wd40 and a good wipe down will prevent rust ?

Chrome sucks too much to take care of.

Just coat them and dont worry about oil and fingerprints or anything else that gets burned on to them forever

I have checked with a reputable chrome and they wanted rigth around $700.00 to re-chrome a set of Bassett Headers. Here is the kicker! They would not guarantee the work for several reasons, one being their are used and contaminated two that they are in an enviroment with water, three they get hot and so on and so forth.

If you are going to take them someplace and get them chromed find out what steps they take in the preparation. And long before you take them down inspect them for soft or weak areas, I'd hate to spend any money on any parts, just for them to fall apart shortly their after.

A new set of Bassetts are around a $1000. give or take so its no small investment, dollar for dollas I'd rather by a new set for the additional $300 than on a re-chrome job.

If you can get them jethot coated for $300.00 and don't mind the color compared to chrome that sounds like a deal to me.

Another coating very close to Chrome and heat resistant is the same that Edelbroch puts on their products called Dura-Shine. A place in OC called Specialized Coatings does this same finish. I don't know how much they want to prep and do a set of headers but it may be worth checking out.

is that coating the stuff that looks like brushed alum.? I think that would clean them up....but now I'm having a bigger problem....the motor with charged batterys doesn't want to turn over....and I tried a couple of times to get 'er to fire but it just doesn't want to turn over...I have new batterys.I'm wondering if the damn starter took a dump.....if it's not one thing it's a woman.......

I checked out Jet Hot....that looks like the shit....I think that is what i'm going to do....but I have to figure out what is going on with the starter....

it fired a couple of days ago but still turned slow....I don't think I'll try running anything without water running in it....I'm going to pull the plugs tomorrow and see what happens....I know it's a high compression motor but I also know the guy I got it from never had this problem....and no I can't talk to him....he passed on in Dec. that is why I ended up with the boat...he willed it to me.....(I wonder if he's laughlin' at me right now...) lol

now I could be wrong but don't they make a starter for high compression engines? More than likely for racing apps...and priceid to match........what gets me is there are 2 batterys in this thing ....

The usual first thing to go on a starter is the solenoid, they are cheap and easy to replace.
Pull the starter and bench test it first, cheaper than anything else, and easier    then you know for sure!

What is the motor? Ford, Chevy, Olds?
And where is the starter located? Is it where it would be on a car or is it top mounted thru the bellhousing? Also how many bolts hold it in place?

I think the High Torque starts start about $200 and go to about $300, thats why its a good idea to eliminate all other problems first. You don't wanna drop two to three bills to have the new starter just go click click click...
