If you can hoist your boat into the water instead of the launch ramp you can alleviate problems with salt on the trailer.  If not, just be sure to rinse everything as much as possible.  A good trick is to fog everything with WD40, this will put a barrier between the salt and metal.  After your done for the day, wash, wash, wash -and flush your engine for several minutes with the hose (this can lead to another debate .)  Most of your materials coming in light contact with the salt water will not be affected by a quick dip in the ocean like the hull, vinyl, carpet, stainless, etc.  Several people are of the opinion that the ocean is the devil, but growing up on the water I guess I am more forgiving.  Over time salt will rot away some of the elements; however, with proper care this can be delayed or nearly avoided.  The big blue has a lot to offer boaters -is unfortunate for some that they will never capitalize on it.

When we go to Speed Week we always give the car, the trailer and all the tow vehicles a generous bath with Salt Away, this shit works wonders! Here's a link to thier site,

So why are people always so paranoid of putting there jets in saltwater? I think as long as you take care of it after there should be no problems.

I think you've seen how neglected pumps can be . Between the SS and hard anodizing in pump I think people are more worried about the motor being eaten up more so than the jet .

I was told to make sure I flushed the motor and pump ASAP . I said " How bout dropping it in a lake on the way home . " They said it would work . I figured I could launch and idle around the marina for a few minutes and be done .

Omar, the lakes may be a little upset about you dropping your boat in their water if your bilge is still wet... Especially with this Quagga mussel problem, they really seem to be checking to make sure your boat is completely dry before you launch.

Life History: Quaggas like silty or sandy lake bottoms. They can live in waters ranging from warm and shallow to deep and cold. They are also able to tolerate somewhat salty water.

I'm not saying they live in salty water, just that they're on the lookout for "wet" boats... I called Castaic today and they told me they would rather I didn't bring my boat there to rinse it with fresh water, they actually asked for my CF #. I hung up...

My favorite topic.  I absoulutely love the salt water around here. You'll never run out of places to see.  The only problem I ever had was that starters didn't care for it if they got some salt water splashed in there. With that said, I ran my cheapo Schucks starter for 3 years before it finally gave up.  I would flush the motor as soon as I got home. I didnt run the motor but just merely hooked the garden hose up to the water line and turn the water on lightly. With this method, it could flush for 24hours straight if I wanted it to.

Enjoy it but understand you'll quickly get bored with lakes and rivers after you do it........john

I agree Undone, is very limited with us freeboardchallenged. Been a few times I was stuck in the harbor because No way in hell was I goin outside the breakwater. But the few times I was ou there it was awesome!!!    Mark

I suppose you're right. I will say though that it's all relative.  I would love some of that warm weather & nice rivers that you guys get to enjoy down there.
