SCJB is back ONLINE
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:18:02 PM »
Sorry everyone about the downed site today. My database took a crap. Luckily I have daily rotating backups that are shipped off to a remote server. Unfortunately, the database was junk before this mornings backup, and Wednesday mornings backup was junk too. so I had to restore from a back that was made on Tuesday morning at 1:45am.

So anything that was posted yesterday and the day before is gone. I apologize, but at least it wasnt a week or months worth of stuff that got lost.

The cause of the database getting corrupted was due to the drive on the server being maxed out. I had some log files that were collecting in a folder that I didnt keep an eye on...and it overflowed the drive.....then the backup failed yesterday morning, and again this morning...then the database just died. all with no warning.

I am researching some full blown monitoring solutions that will log historical data of performance of the server this site runs on....more importantly, it will blow my phone up with emails and texts if things go astray so this can be prevented in the future.

cacti is nice but kinda limited to what u can do with it.  nagios u can monitor pretty much everything and get realtime results.  its straightforward to configure and theres a TON of plugins for almost anything these days or u can add custom scripts in bash, batch, perl, etc to get data. cpu, mem, website loading times, or if the page is loading expected results... not just a blank page, db performance, queries per second, minute, router info, switches, etc.  plus you can always add in nagiosgraph or other rrdtool graph solutions into it.  theres also android apps for nagios like nagroid that will alert you rather than depending on email/sms.

haha ralph, welcome to my world.

I know very little about nagios....and cacti for that matter.

Can you install nagios on a server that monitors itself? I dont have another server to monitor it from. someone told me thats one of its limitations.

im runnin centos 5.6 with apache, mysql, php, etc on a hosted vps thats managed with cpanel
