Wondering what type of machine is capable of working with marine vinyl. Anyone have an opinion?
I have extra time on my hands and I want to start dabbling with upholstery. I'm pretty good at a lot of shit and I want to give this a try... I've got access to material plus a lot of scrap I swiped from my interior project and I wanna make some fender covers and other things once I get the hang.

I will have to ask my pop, he actually has a machine he uses for upholstery. It's a hell of a machine.
He had an older Singer saddle making machine, but he says the one he has now is three times the tool and has many more capabilities....
I will be over there tomorrow... ;)

Since you'll be there, ask him what machine and needle at minimum will punch 19oz vinyl.
This is just a hobbie idea. My guy did a great job on my boat, but there are some things I could have done better if I had the knowledge and equipment.

Had my girlfriend sew mine...bought ours on ebay. Its a industrial model and can multi stitch. They will have a longer arm and makes it easier to sew thick/large pieces of vinyl. Also get some decent needles.

I will be on the lookout. Also is there a really tough type of thread that can be used on marine vinyl?

Dependent on price, I'm sure new is an arm and a leg. I have been combing craigslist for an older, heavy duty sort. WTF is a walking foot? I read a snippet on them as its something necessary for making welt/piping.

ebay has all that stuff you are looking for , including how to books on sewing. i believe it is the item that looks like a fork its chrome and lays flat against the material as you sew.

I guess a short video is worth a thousand words. I'm intrigued, but have never stitched a thing, nor have I looked at an actual sewing machine twice. I'm sure this is one of those things that looks easy from across the street but will take years to master.
I'd really like to try and keep my first purchase in the $100 range and see what I can create.

If you get into to doing that, I have a open bow that you can practice on. Lots of vinyl. I wont even charge you to practice. ;D

Thats not to bad with table...just make sure its been serviced and have them do a demo for you.

FWIW, my pop has $100 in just getting it tuned.... :screwy:
A decent machine will run you into the $1500 range, that I do know.... ;)

my dads had one for years, we use to do leather interiors on rolls royce cars.

That's kinda bad news for me.. but I will end up learning the hard way like usual. I just wanna tinker. Prob go give the $275 one a good look and if I have to, find a place that can make sure its up to snuff and start screwing up good material.

just had mine tuned had no problems $96.00 you get what you pay for on sewing machines. yes on the walking foot for sure.

I would buy that Juki....Like my dad said, you could always use it to trade up....They make tons of stuff for that machine. My neighbor has one similar...The table is worth the $275... :sly:

Ok, so I didn't go and look at it as planned. Instead I went for a sewing 101 lesson at my good buddy's mother's alteration and dry cleaning shop. She's been a citizen for 35 years but doesn't speak English worth a damn so I didn't know wtf she was telling me. Helpful as hell though, her brother owns a sewing sweat shop of some sort and was a clearinghouse of info. He told me what I really need once I get acquainted with things is a dual feed walking foot.
As far as me wanting to make covers for my fenders and tires/wheels for climbing in n out without foot marks on the polished stainless, he said a standard homeowner machine with a #18 needle will suffice as I learn.. and my 92 yr old granny's got an old lacquered singer that she don't use no mo!
I'd also like to make a nose cover for the tip of the bow that will have some velcro straps for hanging onto my bow rails to protect the few square feet of gel and front upholstery from loading/unloading on the beach and folks jumping from the dock to boat. Glad previous owners were consciences about the gel and did not have kids to scratch it for them.
He said as far as the bimini, I'd be better hiring that out or letting him do it if I want it done now.
He said the Juki in the ad was more than likely retired and for a possible reason since its so cheap, but may be a stellar unit, just depends. He said the amount of indestructible paint on the base that wears off is a good indicator in most cases.
Kindly of him, he said he's got a similar model that I can have that works fine with a table but once I get near mastering granny's old Singer I would probably be ready for the real deal if I'm still gung-ho on it, and he'd be glad to provide the Korean connection. They gave me some tough, white and blue thread and some needles that will likely fit the machine I have access to.
Then they surprised me and ordered me a Korean lunch ::)???:-[:'(:-X
I finished the little fishies with a forced smile, but swear to hell I'm supplying In n Out the next time we all chat and translate needle and thread.
