speed sensor
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:49:47 PM »
the good ole speedo doesnt work.... i pressurized the little tube and the guage seems to be working.... then i realize that something is missing? the tube should be attached to something to pick up water right? so im sure this thing is broken so where would i find this bad boy? im sure i cannot find the same one so what are my best options withougt hacking and making big holes? also i notice the temp gauge didnt work, so i have 6 volts to the sensor... shouldnt be 5 volts? i ground the signal wire to ground and the guage spikes all the way up. i noticed the lowest reading on the guage is 140... either my boat is running colder than 140 at silverwood or the sensor is messed up. next time out i was going to bring a multimeter and measure ohms while its cold and when its warm....  you guys have a easy way of testing the engine water/coolant temp sensor? heres a pic of the speed pressure tube thingy

Regarding the pitot tube...

Bucks up= http://www.hardin-marine.com/p-221-pitot-kick-up-assembly.aspx

Medium dough= http://www.rexmar.com/page600.html

On the cheap= http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/Teleflex-Pitot-Tube.aspx?a=263011&pm2d=CSE-SPG-3-GOOGLE&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse

Water temperature is easy, if you can grasp the outlet hose on the stat and it feels "pleasantly warm", it is running cool, if you scream obscenities out loud and people look at you funny, the gauge is probably FUBAR... ;D

gauge should obviously have 12v going to it.  the sender wire can be grounded and you should see the gauge do a full sweep.  make sure you arent using teflon tape on the sender itself.  it needs to be grounded well.  also make sure your ground from the gauge and the ground from the engine are good to the battery.
