Tell me what you think...
« on: August 19, 2011, 04:00:57 PM »
Okay, so I've been looking for a boat. Will be getting one before next summer and looking to spend under 5k... I'm looking for the mini day cruiser style, I have a 4 year old and she gets pretty scared of loud things (like my old stand ups scare her, when they aren't in the water). I've been drawn to such boats as Spectra, Southwind, Nordic, etc. Not looking for something super fast (just has to be able to out run my Dads 01 Malibu, tops at 46mph). There are some other boats I've looked at, locally but I'm going to be in Havasu next weekend and was thinking of checking these boats out. So tell me what you think...

Yeah, the brown and white one seemed like the better deal to me too. I just haven't been able to really find much about southwind as a manufacture.

Thanks, yeah I did some digging last night and found a few things out. And few sweet looking southwinds. So we'll see what happens. As far as price from what you can get from the pictures. They seem like pretty good deals.

Stay away from the first one. It's ghetto. The second one looks good. There is a 20.5 Spectra in Parker that looks clean, it's on craigslist.

Yeah, I'm talking to both the guys. Want to at least compare the two boats because they are pretty close to same price. And hey why not, I'll be out there.
I've also learned that:
brown/white- has a new cover, swim step, an AZ current title...
purple/white- has a home depot cover, having problems with the motor, an CA current title...

problems with the motor?  first sign to just walk away.  theres too many boats on the market right now to start with a boat that already has problems.

Yeah, I'm pretty much leaning to the brown one. But I want to check out the purple one just see it. Because they are so close in price.
But yeah, he said when he took it out this weekend that when he idled into a cove it was bogging a lot. Then after hanging out for a day he went to start it and the battery was died. And yeah I know upholstery is expensive, that's also why I'm leaning to the brown one.

Okay, so I need opinions... Again. And no sorry I didn't get any more pictures. But let's just say it's the brown/white one. And it's super clean, some small gel coat cracks at the normal places, some pretty normal beaching marks, interior is very clean, boat runs great, has nice swim step (needs to be sanded and oiled), owner says if he keeps it he'd get a new carburetor... Oh and the down sides, trailer is a little rusty on the surface (no holes, as far as I can tell), oh and there is 3 (yes 3) Kermit the frogs painted (yes painted) on it, oh and it's named "Kermit"... What do you all think about removing a name...? And should I pick it up for $2900?

Yup. the frogs shoud be easy money to remove either color sand em out or rubbing compound might do it. my buddy has a 21' mandella day cruiser that had tecate beer logo painted on the side and it came right off with rubbing compound.

So no one thinks I have keep the name, due to the "bad luck" from removing a boat name? And the that currently owns it didn't name it. Does that make a difference?

lol have you ever looked at the process to "properly" rename a boat?  its pretty intense... offering drinks to poseidon and such... haha.

A Southwind cruiser in that shape for $2900 seems like a great deal. Hell, even a clean, good running boat for $2900 is a pretty good deal.
Did you get to take out to the water and go for a ride?

95% of the trailers out there have rust. It shouldn't be a problem as long as the wheels roll straight, the coupler locks and lights work. And your bearings have grease.
The name and frogs should come off with no problem. ( A brown and white boat named Kermit? ???)

As long as you've accepted the fact that a boat is a bottomless moneypit, you'll enjoy it. Good Luck.

technically, you can only change it if you get permission from the person who named it. if not, remove the name, but always know that its name sticks

I don't think I even wanna KNOW what that is.........some sort of native thing?

For a tad north of 5k you can flat out buy Pickle which is a proven turnkey boat (well, more turnkey than anything on CL). THAT is my measuring stick.........New battery, she's running fine. Don't recall that boat EVER being towed in except for the Father's Day deal.

And the bad... The cracked gel coat, is minor. First two are on the rear but the name. And the other is on the deck rear the front passenger area. Not bad, needs a good buff. And I'm think Kermits coming off.

I was gonna say, why's Kermit even on there? Don't see no green? I wouldn't worry about gelcoat cracks. IF it was perfect, you'd never sit on it, walk the deck, beach it and would spend countless hours shining, cleaning it instead of enjoying it.

I have a brand new set of seats just like those, but those look perfectly fine!
