tow vehicle
« on: September 04, 2012, 01:41:33 PM »
hey guys need a few opinions here, the truck i have now is getting really tired and i wonder every day if it will fire up  its a 98 gmc sierra reg. cab short bed with 33 inch tires and a 5.0 engine (305) and a heavily modifeid trans. its 235000 miles on it and it shows when i tow my boat. the truck im considering is one of those chevy colorado deals. i like the way they look and love the idea of 4 doors and good gas mileage as my truck gets 10-12 now. the only thing im worried about is when i hook a 18 foot miller with a bbf to it, will it be ok? i know i wont be able to run the hills at 70 but ive come to peace with that. im worried about getting it stopped safely and not killing the truck. any opinions or recomendatios are welcome and needed.

I had a 2002 s10 extreme with the 4.3 v6 and it was a nightmare towing 2 sea doos empty with me and just the wife, that's why I bought a 2004 gmc Sierra with a 5.3 extra cab it did the job for my 19 ft charger. My new boat is a 21 open bow and gave it a run for its $$$ tho lol slow and steady up the hills.

My dodge Dakota 5.2 4x4 pulls 5000lbs according to the sticker also have 215000 on the tranny but motor went out at 150k rebuilding was cheap and fast only took 1 week.. I like it at 16mpg towing and 21 driving the speed limit hwy but id be a liar if I said I wasn't looking for a cummins 12 valve. 24 mpg and can pull the moon

those colorados have an inline 5 cyl that makes quite decent numbers... and the towing capacity is like 5000 pounds.  i think they get an avg 25mpg combined while the v8 version is sub 20's and going to be a typical 15mpg...

I have a Titan on 35's and it does pretty good. I don't have the big tow gears so I'm rolling 3.73 on 35's most hills I'm dogging. But it makes, pulling in 3rd and I can still get going. But it sure eats gas... 10 average. Towing and my DD. But I do enjoying driving. In the price range that I'm in, I'd only trade it for a 09+ 1500 4x4 CC Dodge.

(oh yeah I'm not a fan of diesel at all.)

pull the 5.0 and crank it up, i had a 99 c1500 ith the same stuff, 33''s and built trans...but i did a 383 motor with a slight cam.  the MPG went from 12-14 towing my 24 foot toybox went to 16-18 and not towing went to 26. I al so had 4.11s too that makes a differance, when towing , pulling a hill in 3rd at 4300 than 3700 is a big part of it..R motors Vortec engs are good they can run with the new 5.3s as far as i seen and been in.
