Tow vehicle

So I have yet to find a 7.3 powerstroke engine in my price range to replace the blown one in my truck and after some research my wifes highlander w/ a v6 seems to have the capability to do so. Anyone else try towing with a small crossover? Bad idea or what?

My bud has towed a few of my boats before with his old Nissan Xterra.

No problems doing it, although the 21' Biesemeyer Mini-Day had his brakes smoking quite a bit headed down the hill to Bartlett Lake I guess. (Surge brakes weren't working on the trailer at the time.) The 18-20 footers towed fine.

Honda Ridgeline. V6 and front wheel drive unless I turn on 4x4. Had a Ford Edge before no problems.

the 2wd v6 highlander has a 5k tow rating. should be plenty for a 18 footer. take it easy going up and down hills.

I pulled my 19' Glenco (BBC) with a V6 Fierbird to the river from Big Bear (down the back grade) for several years. Highlander has a better tow rating than the old 'bird.

About 1993 I was dirt poor and had a 1990 Toyota 4X4 four banger automatic (so my wife could drive it) and I towed one boat from Morgan Hill to Lake Shasta, 19' Reinell with a 350 Chevy I/O (about 3500 pounds.).

The very next year I towed a 20' aluminum tunnel hull with a big Chevy and a jet to southern Oregon with a spare 454 in the bed. Averaged 14 MPG and made the trip one way in under 9 hours...

What year 7.3L? I know a guy

early 99 which is actually a 98 but fords wierd. basically e99 to 03 would work prefer 99-00-01 because they still had forged internals, 01 was hit and miss because thats the year they started using pmr (powder metal rods).

I remember posting about this on this here forum. I had a 96 PSD. Loved the truck and I wish I never sold it, but I'll be honest, you don't need a diesel to tow a little ski boat.

Mine had forged internals, but, the powder metal motors were introduced with six bolt mains.. that doesn't indicate weaker capabilities.

My future brother in law has an early 99 with 70k miles on the ticker. Awesome truck, has the forged bottom end with the right turbo and injectors plus the addition of an intercooler.

They changed the bore and stroke in 99.5 but I can't remember which way they went.

He had to add an inner cooler? The early 99 was the first super duty of the new body style of the early 2000. It should of came with and all aluminum intercooler from the factory and should of been an xlt power everything cloth seats which was the only package they offered until the 99.5.

I loved my truck, still do. Just wish I didn't buy it from my father in law. When you buy a truck and it takes a dump 4 months later kinda makes the relationship hard to maintain. Especially when you want to kick their as.s

One dosen't need a diesel pickup to tow a lil ski boat, HOWEVER, Mines an econo-box, 22 on the highway, 17-18 pulling the boat @ 70 mph. A/C blows out icecubes in 115*+ heat. And its just broke in- 493,000 miles. ('96 crewcab 2 wd)
I pull a 6%+ grade 'tween the river and the house, @ 70

(18 miles, 12 uphill)
Bore and stroke remain the same from the earlier N/A 7.3 ~'88, 444 cu. in.
6.oh-oh changed everything

Theres some decent takeouts if ya look around- and seen a '99+ 1 ton flatbed go for $1200, 120k on the clock

I meant that Henry Ford added an intercooler in early 99.
