Like K-034 said, BE CAREFULL !!  I've only driven one flat without a whirl-a-way and I damn near ended up out on the deck.  Without a prop shaft release of some kind, keep it slow and cruise.

Whats it doing that's making it a "handful" now  ??

before the blower the boat was way under powered, trying to control the boat from porpoising and shut down were really the only 2 issues I had to worry about... well now keeping the thing in the water is my problem damn thing will jump clean out !! Lmao,, I need to get use to it being so far out of the water now, and whirlaway is on my to do list this winter, I reluctantly raced a jet boat yesterday and my butthole  was puckered tight!!!

Sounds to me like lowering the plates is in order. Where are they now?

What prop?

11x16 2 blade, plates adjustable with lock out and override pedal,  it really could be me just freaking out cuz I'm not use to it being this much faster.. yesterday was the first time I drove it with the blower.. I need some more seat time and good water...

I understand that the plates are adjustable from the lock out and pedal,  there is way more to it than that. The plates are completely adjustable from left to right individually from the rod.

Have you checked where the are at as far as left, left mid,  center,  right mid and right?

The two blade will want to raise the ass, is it a round ear or flat backed? There is a fine line that it needs to be at to be totally driveable. You should be able to make it feel "comfortable" at all speeds,  if you find the pedal can't make it comfortable,  something is wrong.

My old boss that drove a top alcohol flat used to say that your balls have to be a little bit gnarlier than the strength in your left leg.

It's been a long time since we played with a flat bottom (like 1987),  but there are some fundimentals that never change.

Use a clineometer to get an idea where your at and go from there.

And for good sakes, be careful.

Jacket on at all times.

Do NOT race people till you get a prop shaft release in that thing. Take it easy till you make it safe.

Ill add a couple quotes here, look who they're from. Prop release is less expensive than that blower you added. :-X

Im sure you guys heard about the blown vdrive  that crashed at big river last weekend.. safety first!!!

Your Friendly local v-drive owner

The boat wanting to "jump clean out" of the water is telling me the set up is wrong for that much power. Some people think any old flatbottom can be fast, NOT TRUE.  Most of them where set up to be ski boats, they have steep shaft angles to get them to lift quick and tow nicely. Throw a bunch of power at something like that and all that prop lift will just hop it right out of the water no matter what you do with the plates.  First thing to check is prop shaft angle.  If it has a 10 deg shaft angle you will really have you work cut out for you (example, my flat has a 7 deg shaft angle).  You better check the strut too,  it better not be some cast bronze piece. With blower power, nothing under that boat should be bronze, strut, fins, rudder, prop, nothing.

When you change the HP dramatically, you have to change the gears in the V-drive. Make sure you have an appropriate prop for it. Be careful with plate adjustments. They shouldn't be the same across the board.

So I survived the weekend, let me throw all this out there.. my boat is a 17 ft aquacraft flatty, 10 degree casale, gears unknown never had it apart, 9 degree bronze strut, blown 402 making shit for power as far as blown motors are concerned it just really woke my turd up.. I totally understand the need for a shaft release trust me I'll be doing that this winter, and fiberglass buckets with back braces cuz I now have 2 broken seats!! Lmfao.. but I think alot of the issues have to with me not being comfortable with how much of the boat comes out of the water now, I wanted it to free up and be able to drive the nose down with the plate but once it comes up I can't roll it over, my left legs been killing me for 3 days now trying to.. not saying it was to nose up again ,but when it reached my comfort level I'd pedal the boat to set it down then climb back in it resulting in it hopping out of the water, again probably my fault, I only have 8 gallons of seat time driving this thing with the blower on it, iv been driving it for 4 years and it's way different now.... that being said how much do you think my cav plates should be moving? I was doing alil reading and people are sayin about an inch of down push is normal, I just checked mine and I'm only getting half that.. I'm thinking longer levers on my cross bar are in order to push the plate further.. any thoughts???

Where are they starting angle wise?

There are a lot of variable's when adding hp to a flatty, motor placement, prop placement, strut angle, prop angle, prop blade placement on the hub, plate length, plate adjustment, rocker on the bottom, and so on, 1 inch is a good starting point on the plate travel, I had 1 1/2' down on the K-boat and it used every bit of it when I hit the throttle. That's what makes these things so bad ass is all the shit you have to figure out and adjust, and when you do they haul ass, also a brass strut is only good to about 300 to 400 hp, I might have a steel one for you I just need to know the angle you have

You probably have more than 1/2" of plate movement. Don't check it with the boat sitting on the trailer. The plates cant move properly when they're sitting on the bunks.  You push the plates down but they cant move down because of the bunks and it tries to lift the hull off the trailer.  Lift the rear of the hull an inch or so off the trailer, or slide it back so the plates are completely behind the bunks, then check it.  And always set the plates full up whenever the boat is on the trailer.

And like I said before and K-034 pointed out, nothing under that boat should be brass/bronze now. Your going to have a long winter, but your going to learn a lot.

How much space do you have between the back of the strut and the front of the prop ?  I've seen some of these old ski boats with LOTS of shaft sticking out behind the strut. That's a bad thing, and sense your going to changing the strut its the prefect time to move things around if it needs it.

Alright gentleman,  it's not my cav plates, they are set right where I put them when I converted the boat to the adjustable setup, it had fixed plates when I bought it and that shit didn't work, sooo. My prop is 1 inch from my strut, with a shit load of nickels stuffed in the coupler, so I can move the prop forward, and I do have a really nice ron hill stainless 3 blade prop that he built for me last year after I destroyed all my shit hitting rocks at the river that hasn't been on the boat yet... the more I watch videos of vdrives on the move the more I think I may have been pissing  the boat off and not letting it take its set cuz it was making me nervous! ! Lol I'm looking for an Algon shaft release, how do you guys feel about those??  I know I need to change the strut but I can't throw connelly marine more money than I paid for the boat for a strut, especially not knowing if I need a degree change or not,, I'll build one before I give them what they want for one.. fucking crazy!!! Rant over!! :)
