I've been thinking-
Your lower unit gear ratio- Why not put it in gear, and use a breaker bar to turn the motor over 1 revolution and see how many revs the prop goes?

1.5:1, 1.83:1 I think, and 2:1? Its been too long since I've had merc school. 28 years ago, wtf.

Both Dodges. Look like daddy and son LOL.

Or, you could just look and see what is stamped into the upper gear housing.   

Best? - Closed cooling.

Better? - Sand filter after pump gate valve.

Easy? - Pull engine drain plugs after every outing. I did this for years, I lived in Big Bear at the time (winterized at the river, Nov. and Mar. was still freezing in Big Bear, and had 32* nights in Aug. ). The last weekend of the season, pulled plugs and fired it up, pump still in the water, flushed any sand out. No or little sand build up. Wet sand freezes, ask me how I know.
