New to the forum but have been lurking around for a few years. Finally deciding to pull the trigger on a jet boat since I sold my Ski Nautique. I have a 1970's Rogers lined up to take a look at this weekend. Its got a 455 olds in it (not my preference, bow tie would be better) and looks to be in fair shape with the upholstery recently redone. The price is right and won't sting too bad if I don't use it as much as I would like.

I'm looking for any suggestions on things to look out for that are unique to jet boats (olds motors, pump, hull, etc.). I've owned ski boats, jet skis, and motorcycles so I am familiar with the general things to look for but wanted to see if there is anything specific I should be on the look out for. Any input is greatly appreciated and will be repaid in beer on the water this summer.

Small ball peen hammer to test stringer integrity. Should sounds like you're hitting concrete, not a tissue box.

Compression test on the engine, pull the dipstick, look for moisture and/or rust.

What pump?
Look at the electrical under the dash (shocking how often this gets missed).

Look under the hull at the keel in the bow area (common for beaching damage to occur)

Crawl under it and look into the pump.

Take it for a test drive, even if it costs you a tank of gas and a 12 pack of beer.

Best advice I can give you, look at EVERYTHING. If you really want a Chevy, buy a boat with a Chevy, don't settle because it's cheap.

Great points, thanks! I should have mentioned it has a Berkeley jet. Is there anything specific I can look for? Bearings, play, etc.?

If the weather permits on Saturday I am going to try and get it out on the water at Lake Perris prior to buying it.

I have a Chevy powered boat lined up that is a family friend's that I will ultimately buy if the wife enjoys this cheaper introduction..... who am I kidding I will buy it either way, I can always sleep on the couch. Besides two boats are better than one.
