Interested in why some people prefer to run the jet over the gear box...I'm in a spot to be able to buy my first real nice boat and want to be sure I'm making the right decision. I'm looking at a CP performance 18 turnkey. But I do know that the v-drive boats can get with it! Thoughts?

vdrives require a LOT of setup, tweaking, and gear.  all of which means more money and more to maintain. more to cool.  you have a transmission, etc.  which also means less room in the boat.  jets are simple.  as long as the pump is in good working order they're pretty much bulletproof.  i loved the simplicity of my old jet...

also depends on what you're wanting to do and how deep your pockets are...

I'll be running at lakes here in az..which don't have the greatest water..Also looking at hitting the river some..I have a 19' I/o as well for a family boat so this will really be my hot rod and river boat. I really don't have huge deep pockets, but do have the chance to buy something nice this time around and would like to get some input. I've had a couple jets, never a v drive boat. I don't mind wrenching but I wanna have fun. Not be wrenching the whole time I'm out.

It's all preference and IMO the positives to a jet are, the simplicity, minimal things to maintain, nothing hangs below the hull and you don't have to worry about smacking anything, no exposed props or "spinning blades of death, obviously the roost is a big cool factor and most parts you'll need are relatively cheap and plentiful.

The positives to a v drive is fuel consumption, compared to a jet they are wayyyy better in that aspect, they actually have neutral when there running depending the gear box,if set up right they can be reliable, fast and not break the bank when you pull up to a gas station.


My preferences of the two would be a semi v low pro with a  jet for interior room or a cruiser v drive because most of that junk is hidden in a sub floor. Semi v hull v drives lack interior room and cruiser jets tend to drink gas.

I have owned both, and jets are much easier to deal with and MUCH less maintenance ! and if you have kids it a no brainer!!! jet no prop!!

not sure why kids would not be safe with a v-drive... its tucked 2 feet up in under the boat... if anything a vdrive is safer than all for kids, nothing hanging at the back of the boat to mess with.

to me its just something else i have to worry about. and since i have 3 kids id rather not have to .

I think I'm leaning more towards the 18' cp.  496 bbc, fresh pump with all the whistles and yo-yos.

The CP is a great hull. Capable of triple digit speed with less hp than a lot of v hulls.
