Its been awhile since I contributed anything here and I started a new mini project on my trailer to get it in better towing shape so I decided to document it and share with you guys. I know its basic stuff, but more then often people arent sure where to begin to do something like this.

Main thing to consider is safty while towing your boat. A bad bearing can ruin your trip to or from the river. In some cases one can sieze and rip your tow vehicle off the road and into a ditch so its important to make sure you check your bearings.

I am going to replace all 4 hubs on my trailer. www.bearingbuddy.com sells complete hub packages (bearing buddy included) for about $50 a piece. I am missing a stud on one of the hubs anyways, so what the hell. it wasnt that much more then just buying the bearings, seals, buddys, bras, etc seperately.

First thigns first...huge thanks to chromey for giving me a place to crash while i get settled here in vegas....more importantly, letting me store AND work on my boat here.



Last week I removed 2 of the old hubs to make sure the bearing numbers are consistant between the two axles. You never know if a previous owner changed something up on you.

only one really needed replacement, but it wasnt much more to replace all the hubs as well.

...well, now its more expensive since i have to buy a new set and pay 20% restocking on the incorrect ones

hmm, weird...they dont list an address on their website, but they do list a phone number with a 787 area code....quick google search says thats puerto rico as well. no biggie either way.

I've got a bearing buddy question for someone........On my old boats the zerk was on the cap(so to speak) on the outside. On my new boat the zerk is right on the spindle, and would seem to put the grease to the back bearing, then work it's way to the front. That seems like it makes alot more sense than just putting the grease under the cap/bra. Any thoughts here...

You would have to understand why the Bearing Buddy works. Bearing Buddies have virtually nothing to do with "greasing the bearing", they have to do with keeping the bearing cavity pressurised to eliminate water ingestion when the hot bearings get put in frigid water...

The zerk axles are OK, but IMHO you're better off removing the zerk from the axle and installing a set of BB's, the bearings should be properly packed prior to their install anyways, so lack of grease is seldom an issue.

BTW, to check the amount of grease avail, just push on the plunger section and see if it moves, if it moves, don't grease it. The plunger will bottom out on the outer housing if no grease is present. It is also very important that your grease seals are in good shape also.

Funny story,

Several years ago, I ordered a Jabsco washdown pump for a customer, I ordered it from a supplier in Rancho Cordova Ca., they said it was not stocked and had to come from the factory and would be up to a week to get it on the truck...

Anyways I get this thing shipped directly to the shop form the manufacturer and it came from Dearborn Michigan, I opened the box and the front brass plate had stamped in it ITT Jabsco, Rancho Cordova Ca.  

BTW the freight cost me $18 for a pump that cost $85.
