The end length of a boat trailer depends on the taper of the bow of the boat and other minor details...
The ball needs to be far enough out from the end of the hull to not interfere with the tow vehicle when making an extreme maneuver. On most vee hulls, the tongue needs to be at least 2 1/2' from the end of the hull. I use 4' as a calculator, take a four foot stick (or whatever) and put it next to the hull to act as a tow vehicle bumper and use it to guesstimate how far out the tongue needs to protrude the front of the hull, you don't want the hull to be able to contact the tow vehicle too soon as far as turning angle...Does that even make any sense?
