Boater responsibility?

Like the title says, what is MY responsibility when out enjoying my boat?
Last Sunday, after launching @ BHC Comm. park, I was idling out beyond the congested area, (no 'No Wake Zone') and a jetski overturns, 20-30 feet away from me, drifting towads me, with 3 people on(off) it. All of them looked like they were under 16. One girl was hysterical about being in the water and floating down the river with an upside-down ski. Another kid didn't even have a life vest on. Their friends had another ski, and it went over too. They were close enough to shore to swim and drag that ski. I ended up with the 3 kids in the boat and towing the flipped ski to shore- Maybe 60-70 feet from shore.
Yes- they were rentals
Yes- they spoke English, as a second language.

I've helped many boaters out on the river and lakes, and I've also been helped, but this was clearly irresponsible jetskiers, and their parents, and I didn't want someone to drown.
If I had open headers or a prop boat, I would be leery of approaching them, for obvious reasons, especially in this shallow water.
If ya cant handle the river, get the fxxk off!!!

It is in my humble opinion that its always a judgment call.

The first thing you need to do is ensure you are not putting yourself or your crew into harms way.

Rivers are funny... Many people do not know how to react when shit goes bad. You only really have a few seconds to jump into action.

I think you did the right thing, but at the same time had every right to read them the riot act.

What you witnessed is exactly what causes drownings that make stupid rules and restrictions on those that follow something called common sense.

Stupid rules were meant for stupid people, but since we can't discriminate against people with no brain, we all pay the consequences with rules like 35mph speed limits.

Karma will remember what you did.

Why couldn't they all just remount and be on their way. Maybe take the girl aboard because she is scared but can't they guys just swim back to it or you bring it back to them? Why didi you have to take them all the way in?

(a) A master or individual in charge of a vessel shall render
assistance to any individual found at sea in danger of being lost, so
far as the master or individual in charge can do so without serious
danger to the master's or individual's vessel or individuals on board.
(b) A master or individual violating this section shall be fined not
more than $1,000, imprisoned for not more than 2 years, or both.

Upside down ski, Big azz yamahas, & a 7 mph current.
I could do it, but Ive ridden before, too

Joe- 100+ people on the beach, and apparently I'm required too, right up until my boat goes on the rocks...'lost at sea" nah- Havasu is 96 miles, and mexico is 275 mi, +/-

From what I remember from class... Inland lakes and rivers do not fall under this exact protocol.

Am I remembering correctly? Being as I am on my phone right now, too lazy to look it up.

either way he deserves a at-a-boy...whether high seas or lakes or rivers we should all practice good stewardship ...it was just a hahaha moment that i couldnt resist lol...i believe in karma as well...so to all if you " fair winds and fallowing seas " good deeds dont go unnoticed...hahaha how u like that food for thought of the day..haha 😜🍻

I rescued a grandpa and a little girl last weekend at Elsinore the poor grandpa was scared when his pwc quit on him in the middle of the lake, I grabbed his granddaughter put her on the boat and towed him in the Mom was sure happy to see us .

I remember when I was younger me and my dad were on his 26 foot sleek craft and there were four kids ( 2 jet skis 2 on each ) that were messing around trying to spray each other with the wakes and sure enough they collided. We both saw it so he motored over there pulled them all in the boat and was only able to save one ski due to the other one had a hole in it about the size of a basketball. Once we got to shore they got a lecture from my pops and there parents. One of the kids we still see around the lake today and he's more cautious then my dad lol. Some of the people today just don't realize the consequences of there actions before it's too late

Years ago, I was floating on the river in a friends boat (bullhead area) when all of a sudden we were hit by a wave runner. The boat I was in was not under power but I happen to be standing up when it hit us. I was fine, but the wave runner was another story. It had three people on it, which were freaking out. They were hanging on the boat screaming and crying. We helped them in and went to shore. Wave runner had a huge hole in it and was a rental. The ranger ended up coming out and dealt with it. I was only about 18....it opened my eyes to how ignorant some people are out there and shouldn't be operating anything!

Having been sprayed by a rental wave runner floating my way back from Davis dam, I don't think I'd be a nice a guy as you. If they weren't fit enough or can't figure how to grab the intake grate and put feet on the rub rail and use body weight to get it right side up, they really shouldn't be there.

I can tell you as a new boat owner you did the right thing. Ive been helped a couple times. A member from this site just helped me with a part I needed just this past weekend. Jim. Great guy. Ive read a lot of posts and have seen a ton of generosity whether it was action like yourself.....wise words or advice....guys even volunteering their time for guys they have never met. Its been great being a rookie member here and I don't know anyone personally on here. But there's a reason I'm looking through here everyday and its the goodness and fun of the people on here. Basically my point is you can never go wrong offering someone help in whatever form you can! I definitely intend to every chance I get just to repay back what ive received personally! My $0.02

I would hope most of us would help out if someone's in trouble. I'm almost 50 now and know I have done some pretty stupid stuff in my time. Even when my poor decisions got me in a bind people were always willing to help out. Now I guess it is my turn to help out ever chance I get. Tracy you are welcome for the part, just glad I could help you out. We all know you did the right thing and at the end of the day i'm sure you felt like you did as well.
