I must be getting old.
« on: September 09, 2008, 10:42:46 AM »
I don't know if it is just me or what, but it seems there are a lot of people these days that think they are just awsome, can do no wrong and the way they "do it" is right and everyone else can just go to hell, I was just checking out some of the "other" sites and reading some posts and was amazed at how many of these posers think that because something worked for them, that is is the only way it can be done, instead of taking into account there are thousands of ways to do one simple thing, some work well, some don't.

I was raised different or something, I like to get several opinions and then form my own, where as some of these punks try to shove their opinions down your throat and F-U if you don't want to listen, whatever loser....

I saw some of the same crap when we were racing, you would get the guy who says "why are you running one of those, that's old school" actually talking about a hull that we had, well I just looked at him and said, "how do you think it got to be old school? because it works" come to find out his one off $30,000 custom hull would handle like crap in smooth water at speed and we passed him four times in that water, seems there is only about 2 miles of actual rough water in the 38 mile Rogue course and the rest is like a dragstrip...Guess he don't know everything like he thought. :sly:

I guess my point is if you shut up and listen once in a while you will probably get some good info. that you did not know about and may help you or someone else down the road, you can't teach anything to someone who "knows it all".

Thanks for letting me blow off some steam, cant stand being talked to like I'm an idiot, by an idiot.

Besides its uncalled for....Most, if not all of the guys on this site seem cool and haven't had any issues, but go to the "other" site and your in for a rude awakening. BTW if someone talks to you that way, let them know, they may not realize they are doing it, and if they do realize it, just leave him alone, he'll figure it out...

oh a few people came to mind when i read this......  ;)

GT - the above is one of the reasons i created this site and have chased off a few people who came here with that mentality.

There is a few types of the people you mention above.

Some know their stuff from personal experience and are so closed minded that anything that is different from what has worked from them is "junk".

Some know their stuff from reading what their favorite boat has worked with (2nd hand information) and think its the bible to jet boating.

Some people know their stuff from listening to some old timer (racer, shop owner, etc) who take their word as gold and anything otherwise is wrong.

...and just because someone does 160mph in a hull that you think is the same as yours doesnt mean youre going to go triple digits.

Hey Brad, for that right there I say "Thank You", because this really is the most fun I have had playing with boats, met some really cool people who, for lack of a better term, think like I do, and I have been able to both learn and I hope teach some of what is quickly becoming a "lost art", you don't realize it right now, but there are very few shops left that will even bring a Jetboat in for service, much less one that is 30+ years young ;D

I have been a Jetboat freak for way too long and am afraid that I am pretty set in my ways, still like to wake up hearing a 5000 RPM blast across the lake, but its getting rare....

"If you can't have fun doing it, then why do it?"

Fwiw GT I was happy to see you posting over there, I know you know you shit. Btw I'm the idiot with the sticking drive line. Prolly is a twisted shaft. Fwiw I really like your idea on the grease zerk although I'm not positive where to put it?

I appreciate that SLKREG, I try to go over there once in a while to see if things have changed, they haven't, I don't want you to think I was referring to you, or even that thread, but you can see what I mean...

My splined yoke has a zerk fitting in the end before the U-joint, and it had a plug in the center with a 1/4" hole in the middle, more than likely to let out the excess grease, when I sucked up a rock the sise of a racketball, I twisted the shaft about 3*, split the bowl open and shattered an aluminum impeller, really sucked, but at the same time very impressive. The new shaft is a hardened race shaft because I installed a new SS impeller, but with a de-tuned 468 Chev. hoping to keep the MPH with less HP while increasing reliability and reducing sound...tired of Johnny law...

I want to see if I can post a pic or two of my DL, at work (sort of) right  now but will try later.

If you pull the four bolts that retain the bearing thrust cap, you can see the entire length of the splines and it is very evident if they are distorted, I used a speed square (framers square) to compare, you can also clean everything up and apply a light coat of Moly lube (sta lube) or similar black grease like disc brake grease and slip on the yoke, the shiny spot is where contact is happening if at all. its not uncommon to see one twist, I have three (don't know why I keep them).

Also too, if it sticks again, hit it with an electric heat gun, if its vacuum seized the grease will expand and should push it off.

Keep us posted.
Thanks again

Almost forgot to mention, make sure the yoke does not bottom out with the engine attatched (engine failure) or stick out too far from bottoming(driveline/shaft failure) should be about 3/8" max, you want the maximum spline contact (I've only seen a handful done right).

Again, only my opinion ;D

Thanks , I will pull the thrust bearing cap toinite and check it out. On the 3/8" deal are you saying the dl should slide on the shaft all the way but 3/8."(or less) So in other words it should be 3/8" (or less)from bottoming out.  What would ideal be, 1/8" to 1/4"? Sorry didn't mean to side track your thread.

I shoot for a 1/4", when I got my Bubbledeck the shaft was only on by 1" :o and the boat ran 70MPH...
Scary stuff. IMO 1/8" is too tight, the problems start if that clearance goes away, the pumps shaft pushes against the only thrust bearing left, the rear main of the engine (454 Chev) and away she goes...BTW very often overlooked.

I normally just slide the DL all the way in and scribe it to tell where it is.

No problem on the thread jack, I was only venting.
