My best attempt at HP vs Low Cost story...

Note: not taking any sides here

this was just a budget build

A few years back (while we still had a machine shop out back, think 10years now, key point) I put together a motor, 390 FE for my 76 Ford truck. All the machinging was done in house free, which if I added up all the Pro work done (stress plate boring cylinders and line boring, ballancing and blueprinting I went through) would have added a few thousand I'm sure. All I needed to buy was Cam, Pistons, rings, bearings, cross bolt kit, rockers (1.7-1,adj), lifters, oil pump, timing chain kit, gasket set, intake, carb and maybe a few more little things. Now, at my cost (wholesale!) that came to just over $1750.00cad If I factor in the cost of a block/heads/engine they were already on the motor I got for $300. (lucky me, all rare performance stuff

)
My end result was a dyno of just over 450HP and a cost of $2100.cad. I thought I did rather well

but maybe not so well, glad I did not have to pay for a machine shop

Could have gotten more power with bigger cam, solid lifters and carb, but I wanted good gas milage too

Tell that to your childish friend. I guess this is the only attention he gets. He had to bring this up for a month ago and from another forum. He needs you guys as his cheering section. I've tried to be nice and take my comments off line like a MAN but that isn't good enough for him. You like cheering for a has-been fine. He reminds me of old computer geeks, still trying to reclaim the past. It don't fly with me. By the end of this next summer we'll see who can do what. I'm just getting back into the engine playing and it's been about 35+ years since I did any racing. I had a car that ran 10.6 in the 1/4 mile (1970) and it was completely street legal and ran on pump gas. That was a Dodge Challenger. Now I know boats are somewhat different but that knowledge will come as well.

He has turned a simple statement into a major ordeal. Cheer on folks.

I find this very interesting. You bash or for living in the past yet you're doing the same thing. There is a lot of info from the past that is very useful today whether it be about engines or hulls.
As far as you not thinking much of me, that's your perogative (or is it prerogative) and it really doesn't bother me in the least. I find it real interesting how often you still visit the LBB board to read what's there and then ask questions about what's posted on other boards. I guess you can figure out that clicking on invisible mode doesn't really make you invisible to all.
In any case, most everyone on the boards are there to give a helping hand to people who need the help and/or advice. Most of us really don't like to see people making the same mistakes that a lot of us have already done. Granted, some of the advice or suggestions are a bit off which can and will produce more questions, like all those pm's you sent me. I don't think less of you Greg, I just think you're somewhat misguided in what you're trying to do.
If you can build a 700 hp engine for the cost you posted, that's great. What's interesting about a jet pump is it's like a dyno. The HP of an engine can be determined by the rpms it spins a certain sized impeller. As mentioned before, time will tell what kind of HP your engine puts out, hopefully you get what you're claiming and disprove the rest of us.

I wish I could find a good link to the the actual articles but Mopar Muscle Magazine has been running a series every year where the best builders in the country build the best motor they can while having cost averaged in to determine a winner. First they built Hemi's then they built 500cu in wedge motors. All were in the 700 hp area with the winner at more like 750. Every one of them had more than $1700 in just heads and valvetrain easy. The cheapest place I know of to buy quality roatating assemblies (piston, rods, bearings, rings etc.) would charge almost $1500 for just that. I guess things must be really different in SackTown.
Here is a post showing real world dyno numbers on motors built to acheive 700 hp as cheaply as posssible. In my world these motors all run over $6000.

We haven't been there for many years, drove through it about 7 years ago to show my wife and kids around and I couldn't believe how it has changed.
My grand parents moved there in 1960 and built the first home in the Riveria, which was kinda swanky back then but I don't even know what the hell it is now. We started to go the river in '61 and my folks and aunt and uncle rented a little place in one of the trailer parks for a few years and then bellied up I think in '63 and bought a trailer. We were the 3rd trailer from the water in Wagonwheel trailer park, which was still there when we drove through, until '72 when my folks bought in Parker. Our little trailer didn't even have a bathroom in it.lol But the park had shower and a bathroom.
It was a lot of fun back then, no Laughlin, no power plant, no signials in Bullhead nothing but endless flat, cold, water to ski on. It was perfect for out little flat bottom.

Just curious about where you live and how it is today? I haven't spent any real time there since my grand parents both died in 1980.

Back in the early 90's I was building a 28 roadster pu baised on the 2 pictures of Larrys. That is still one of my all time favorite hot rods. I've got to get to your place and see that pu.

Dads boat was a 'Catalina Conquest'. Named so because the builder and his buddies raced tham in the annual water ski race to catalina and back.The guy that built them was a fireman, a pretty common thing back in then. My dads cousin was a fireman and was a rigger for Len Schiada back in the day. I've heard that his shop was a big hang out for them too?
But the guy that built dads boat only built 13, did it locally here in Long Beach on Siginal Hill. My dad sold it to my moms brother in about '71, he painted it all white and then sold it to her other, younger brother, the one who lived in Bullhead. But he bought it after his 2 tours in Nam '66-'68 as a Marine gunner on a huey. He used it for a while and then sold the engine to a guy. That's where the trail ends and that was in about 1974-5. I bugged my parents for years and they could never remember the name of the guy that built the boat. I've asked all the oldtimers that were building boats then around this area and they don't reconize it. I ran the numbers through the dmv and their off the record. I even went to Long Beach plywood who at that time was the largest supplier of mahogony plywood and they don't remember either. I'd give anyting I own to have that boat again, even if it was just for the frames to use as patterns, but I think it was long ago use as landfill or a bonfire.

My dad named the boat 'Thum-Purr'. It ran pretty good for what it was. That 75 evinrude ran on a mag, no charging system. With dads good 2 blade prop and only 2 in the boat, it's run just at 51 on the stewert warner speedo... so you could probably knock off a few mphs. lol I don't want to know what it REALLY ran on GPS. I like my own memories of it.

I have a few more shots of it and if you'd like I'll post some. My moms house burnt down a few years ago and most all of that old stuff was lost. Luckily I had one or 2 of the photo albums at the time of the fire.

the pickup is in Monterey Heights, my friend Mike is doing a total resto of it circa 1946, he's friends with a bunch of Larry's old clubmates "The Trompers, Eagle Rock" he has breakfast with them quite often and he's actually the one that found the history of the truck while talking to some of the graybeards one day and telling them of my RPU purchase, I sold it to him with the condition that he A: restore it to it's former glory, and B: give the remaining Trompers complete liberty in it's rebuild he agreed and it's on the road to recovery, here's a pic of Shinoda in the RPU, circa 1946, not more than a year after he was released from an internment camp.

I came up from Parker and before that was Cali.

Im sure this town has change alot since you were here last, They all seem to do that. Wagon wheel, man i used to get chit faced their on that old rickety dock, i aint been there in years, and im not missing out on anything.

Im lucky though i live right between two launch ramps so now i just need to finish these boats so i can use the ramps again

I know nothing and have heard nothing about that little hot rod pickup, but sh!t that is so flockin' cool, very similar look to the look I want out of my '32 (yea I know that one isn't a '32). Check out those old pics, damn this is a cool thread (NOW).

Can you see the similarities?

Same model A bed, stock Ford front axle, '32 grill, similar rake (when I get the correct rear wheels on it), same front frame horns, probably the same front wheels ('49 Ford, I think), the original one looks like a '28 or '29 though... check out the exhaust

Check out the intracey's (sp?) of that wood hull's construction - craftsmen!

the top picture is one of the one's that set me off to build one like it. I think it was in one of the Montgomery books, or a Tex Smith book. Great car, still would love to see it in person some day.

too bad to hear about the wagonwheel. I was there when the dock was new. I have some pictures of it with the boat tied to it. Bill and Ruth Houseburg were the wagonwheel owners, the were in the park my folks were at before and then bought that property and developed it. Where in Parker were you. We had property at Marina View estates, '71 to '96 or so, right across the line where you could own porperty, 'bout a mile up river from Badenochs and on the water too. I bought the lot across the street fom my folks.

Cool shots of Schiada. We took one of the glass ones, the bottom boat, in on trade at Advantage...buts that's another story. If you talk to Lens nephew ask him if he remembers Floyd Chambers. That was my dads cousin. He died in '84.

Do you remember Porky's pizza place? i lived at the top of the hill above it. I think they called it Lakeside or something. I Remember Blue water lagoon just as you cross the bridge coming into parker left hand side and then we had the Blue water Marina where they race the boats now. If i remember correctly. We used to party down there where it was all beach and a two lane road, i dont know what its like now that they have the casino there.

I dont go back to parker to often, too many x girlfriends

And they all got Fat!
