military pay
« on: September 08, 2007, 08:16:34 AM »
i have two sisters that are fighting for our rights and when i read shit like this it makes me verry angry. i did copy it from another board >:(
This is an Airman's response to Cindy Williams' editorial piece in the Washington Times about MILITARY PAY, it should be printed in all newspapers across America.

On Nov. 12, Ms Cindy Williams (from Laverne and Shirley TV show) wrote a piece for the Washington Times, denouncing the pay raise coming service members' way this year -- citing that the stated 13% wage was more than they deserve.

A young airman from Hill AFB responds to her article below. He ought to get a bonus for this.

"Ms Williams:

I just had the pleasure of reading your column, "Our GIs earn enough" and I am a bit confused. Frankly, I'm wondering where this vaunted overpayment is going, because as far as I can tell, it disappears every month between DFAS (The Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and my bank account.

Checking my latest earnings statement I see that I make $1,117.80 before taxes. After taxes, I take home $874.20. When I run that through the calculator, I come up with an annual salary of $13,413.60 before taxes, and $10,490.40, after.

I work in the Air Force Network Control Center where I am part of the team responsible for a 5,000 host computer network. I am involved with infrastructure segments, specifically with Cisco Systems equipment. A quick check under jobs for Network Technicians in the Washington, D.C. area reveals a position in my career field, requiring three years experience with my job. Amazingly, this job does NOT pay $13,413.60 a year. No, this job is being offered at $70,000 to $80,000 per annum... I'm sure you can draw the obvious conclusions.

Given the tenor of your column, I would assume that you NEVER had the pleasure of serving your country in our armed forces. Before you take it upon yourself to once more castigate congressional and DOD leadership for attempting to get the families in the military's lowest pay brackets off of WIC and food stamps, I suggest that you join a group of deploying soldiers headed for AFGHANISTAN; I leave the choice of service branch up to you.

Whatever choice you make, though, opt for the SIX month rotation: it will guarantee you the longest possible time away from your family and friends, thus giving you full "deployment experience." As your group prepares to board the plane, make sure to note the spouses and children who are saying good-bye to their loved ones. Also take care to note that several families are still unsure of how they'll be able to make ends meet while the primary breadwinner is gone -- obviously they've been squandering the "vast" piles of cash the government has been giving them.

Try to deploy over a major holiday; Christmas and Thanksgiving are perennial favorites. And when you're actually over there, sitting in a foxhole, shivering against the cold desert night; and the flight sergeant tells you that there aren't enough people on shift to relieve you for chow, remember this: trade whatever MRE (meal-ready-to-eat) you manage to get for the tuna noodle casserole or cheese tortellini, and add Tabasco to everything. This gives some flavor. Talk to your loved ones as often as you are permitted; it won't nearly be long enough or often enough, but take what you can get and be thankful for it.

You may have picked up on the fact that I disagree with most of the points you present in your opined piece.

But, tomorrow from KABUL, I will defend to the death your right to say it.

You see, I am an American fighting man, a guarantor of your First Amendment rights and every other right you cherish. On a daily basis, my brother and sister soldiers worldwide ensure that you and people like you can thumb your collective nose at us, all on a salary that is nothing short of pitiful and under conditions that would make most people cringe. We hemorrhage our best and brightest into the private sector because we can't offer the stability and pay of civilian companies.

And you, Ms. Williams, have the gall to say that we make more than we deserve? Rubbish!

I am always shocked and galled when I read about prominent and affluent people making negative comments about the troops that risk their lives and limbs so they can sit in their air conditioned rooms typing on their Asian made computers.  I think not only should at least the lower ranking military personell be given raises but every solider should be given a new car and guaranteed home loan when they are discharged.  Shame on you Cindy Williams, and I never liked your TV show either (I'm SURE you were overpaid)

Lameverne and Shirley...Two of the most annoying bitches in TV history...I wonder if she typed that story with her beak? Dumb wannabe Jane Fonda...'Course I'd be bitter if I worked my whole life in a bottle factory to...Haven't heard from that bitch since the early 80's and this is her come back?  Hope ya' like the backlash you are going ta' get from this masterpiece...Why is it always the old washed up floozies that couldn't get a reality TV gig that start some shit to get attention and wind up looking like a dumb (something that ryhmes with "hunt")...She was an actor! And a shitty one at that! Why in the Fuk does the Washington Times give her the time of day to write such nonsense? Whats next Washington Times? Screech writing about the effects of illegal immigration?

These people do not get what they deserve in my opinion and anyone who thinks it's OK to take from someone who puts there life at risk for you is clearly not seeing the grand sceme of things . Maybe those two should enlist for a year and then tell me its more than enough.  >:( What a joke those are . >:(

All I can say is this is our Country and we should be obligated to serve and whatever they choose to pay if any is fine with me. It really is not a job it is and should be an obligation.

BTW - I put 6.5 years in the Army as a 11-B

Even if we were required to serve they'd have to pay us. How would an 18 year old married couple with a kid and maybe one on the way survive while one or both of the "adults" are serving without pay? Considering this is America and we are used to our freedom, don't think that idea would fly very well.

A young maried couple  ::) Well the Military gives a housing allouance and pays medical 100%. If the new wife was at home she could work a job untill she was unable do to the new one on the way. As far as eating there is tons of food avalable on any military base at any given time. Honestly it would suck to no get paid so min wage should be good enough.

I guess we should have you try out your theory? To further excite your point. You're not allowed to accept freebies, or handouts to help out. That's kind of a backstabbin point of view you're bringing up Jim. A soldier should make less money than someone flipping a burger? What would be the initiative? Why would you be a part of the military if you could make more with a an elementary school education. Come on. Secondly, I sure as shit wouldn't want some ass hole who didn't want to be there assigned as my battle buddy is he gonna shoot me in the back because he freaked out? My friends in Iraq have enough problems dealing with people who enlisted that fail to back them up, or instead of shooting they sit there and shit their pants. Be realistic. You're not exactly sounding like someone I would want on my side. If you were assigned as my battle buddy you'd probably find yourself running from a grenade that found it's way into your back pocket. That's a pretty chicken shit idea. I've had 3 people I was friends with in High School die in Iraq. You can't possibly begin to justify their lives at the cost of minimum wage. Don't forget, after they're dead, the military has no obligation to their family afterwards aside from the burial.

Guess they wont be able to go to the lake...Honey...Fire up the B210 so we can go get our food box!  You know whats funny? Here we are bagging on Laverne thinking she said it, which she didn't, and now you are in effect saying the same EXACT thing! The don't need a raise Min. wage should be just perrrrrrfecttttt.....Does EPM offer military discounts?!  >:(

The thing is guys there are a lot of things that have changed over the years in the military. And those are the things that have aloud for what we are really dealing with. I would again serve my country for chicken scratch. **** I would do it for free. As far as me doing my job, back the **** up jack you no nothing. The US Military is week now ! Hell this country is week also. I do understand your point of not wanting someone that will turn on you or hell fall a sleep, I have two scares in my back from that.
I am sometimes very imbarased from what I see on the military chanells. If you want to talk more about this give me a call as I won't discuss my feelings about the military anymore here.

We should not even be over there !
We should have made a new glass table top of the god forsaken place.

There are things in life you don't openly discuss.....religion and politics are on the top of that list. Why? Because no one ever agrees on it and always resorts to arguments.

Please keep this thread in line....this is a boating forum. It is not for political discussion.
