A little rant...
« on: June 30, 2014, 08:41:23 PM »
Too profile or not to profile that is the question...???

I'm a small business owner, I started my company 2 years ago did everything by the book and worked my way up slowly. Just 2 weeks ago I bought new equipment with the idea of hiring a new/first employee. I paid hundreds of dollars for my add to be visible on numerous job websites and I got over 60 applications/resumes. Out of all those one gentleman stood out...13 years experience in the field clean record, married 4 kids. Only 2 downfalls were spent 3 years in jail supposedly "innocent" and 5'5 250 lbs (job is very physically demanding). Nevertheless in the interview/training he said "I can do this job with my eyes closed and my arms tied behind my back, no worries". I asked him how come he hasn't had a job in 3 years, he said "nobody wants to give me a chance cause I spent 3 years in prison for something I didn't do".

I felt bad for the guy. I had friends in the same position so I decided to give him a shot.

Sure enough on his first day he quit. He told me he wouldn't leave me hanging cause I gave him a chance when nobody else would and he'd work till I find somebody else to fill the position. Needless to say, bs. He quit on me 2 days later for good. I wasn't mad I figured that's what I get for giving somebody a chance.

The kicker: I sent him over an agreement on his first and last paycheck. For 2 and half days of work he made 375 bucks and I guess he thought different. Hung up the phone on me told me to go f myself. In any other situation I would've laughed it off and moved on. This was a bit different. He had the keys to my equipment and my fuel card which thank god the daily limit was set at 400 bucks.

I had to get the authorities involved to get my property back!

I didn't want to hire him because he was 5'5 250 lbs and I know this job is very physically demanding. My wife didn't want me to hire him cause of his 3 years in the joint. I wanted to give him a chance cause none of my buddies had a 2nd chance, my wife didn't care about his weight.

Any small business owners out there with the same experience? Any pointers in future hiring? Profile or not to profile???

Bottom line i guess I'm mad cause so many people tell me there's no jobs out there....wrong! There's jobs but people are fu××ing lazy and don't want to work their money. They expect something for nothing. In my opinion working 50hrs per week coming in at 10am monday and your last week work day, which is friday, leaving at noon for 750 per week isnt that bad. I guess alot of premadonnas running around in socal.Like I said fellas any advise for the future would be greatly appreciated. ..

Seen a couple of guys on here looking for jobs and for future employees...don't bs or lie to your future boss just to get the job for a day or month to get you by. A lot of paperwork and money involved in hiring a new employee which they don't realize. Be honest, don't apply for a job just to get you by unless it's a real shi××y job. Oh and no matter what you do don't call your future/boss bro lol.

your business is the livelihood of your family.  whatever you do, do *NOT* tank chances on people.  them screwing you over is the difference between being successful and going broke.  you cant gamble like that.  it has nothing to do with profiling, ethnicity, etc.  its not your fault that HE screwed up and got caught up in something he did or didnt do.  thats not your problem.  go with the safe bet and hire someone willing to learn and an open mind with a good work ethic.  sounds to me like dude was cocky and wouldnt have done things the way you wanted anyways.  "i can do this with my eyes closed..." ok fine, go do it somewhere else hotshot.  i got a family to feed.

True. I guess I got caught up with my buddies pasts. Thought I was being a good guy for giving someone a chance who has been denied one for over 3 years. I've worked for other business of course and I hated the way they treated me their employees but they were multi million/billion dollars business. I guess I should learned from them. Just sad that one person just hit the delete button on my end for all other people that apply with me who really truly want a second chance.

Yeah brother it's simply sad how our government supports these lazy fu×ks day in and day out but flips the middle finger towards small business owners like myself...very sad time we live in and very disappointing.

you can give people a chance... just start with something small.  clean a truck, do some grunt work.  earn your trust and THEN you can talk... if he's a good guy he will show you in actions, not words.

I'm a small electrical contractor, 4 employees. Tried hiring guys with experience. It never worked. They never knew as much as they said they knew or their work ethic was shit or I'd constantly have to fight with them to get them to do things the way I want them done.

My best experience has been finding someone with a good work ethic, eager to learn and equally important to me, I want them to be somehow connected to one of my friends or family. When they know that their dad, mom, brother, uncle or whoever is going to kick their ass if they screw me over, it keeps them honest and loyal.

Everyones business is different but this works for me. I know you can't always wait to train someone new when times get busy but that's what long days and long weeks are for.

Don't take chances on your first employee, wait until you have a few and can cover a job if it doesn't work out. Sometimes it's best to hire a young guy and train him then to  hire someone that's trained by someone else. Always remember we only go to work to make an honest dollar. I would rather go play or do personal stuff then take care of other peoples problems. I to am self employed and my first few years where a learning process. Never give up and at least consider what the wife think because as the owner you are more passionate about you work and she might see something you don't. Can't see the forest through the tree's. good luck!

Not all "hooligans" are bad news, but quite a few make us all look real bad. I've had my fair share of run ins with the law, I'm covered in tattoos ( since '85 before it became a "fad") ride a Harley Chopper, and am building your stereo typical, greaser style, heavily chopped and channeled '32 Ford, so just looking at me, and seeing the things I do, you would think that I'm an ex-con, crook, and am nothing but trouble!! But Honestly, although I have had problems and have been arrested.... I've never actually been inside a jail cell of any kind!!

On the contrary, I've been married to my current wife for 19 years, have had my current job for 8, have never missed a scheduled day of work, stay late all the time and was a supervisor at an engine rebuilding shop for 5 years prior to this one. For me, people may not like my looks, music, or cars, but they can't say anything BAD about my work loyalty, ethic, or quality. A person that wants that job will persue it. I knew 3 workers at my current job, and 2 were supervisors, but I t still took me 3 different job apps, and 3 interviews before I finally got that chance. I'm still here, and the other 2 guys that were hired before they gave me that chance are loong gone.

I have 6 kids between an ex wife and my current one, none out of wedlock, have bought and sold 2 houses and have zero credit cards. And posses the titles to all the cars, 2 Harley's, and the boat I own.

Not trying to sell myself for your job or anything here, just trying to give another perspective, or "side of the coin". There are good guys with a checkered past (like me) that do just "need a second chance". I'd suggest maybe going thru a temp. agency, that way you don't have to provide any L&I insurance or benefits. Then you can see how he works out after the guys has been there for a while, then you can hire him if it's a good match, or don't offer a job, and get another temp. thru the agency??

Before the current situation that has happened with my daughter, I had been trying to get a job in L.A. or SanDiego for years, (because Spokane, is cold, rainy, and snowy) and that "arrest record" has sometimes been an issue, even with NO convictions!! My boss knows I want to go back to Cali. bit I also still work my ass off there, and wouldn't leave without a 2 week at minimum notice. That notice cost me 2 potential jobs before, because they needed someone NOW, and I wouldn't do that to my employer!!

Good luck, there rally ARE good guys/ gals out there, just need to find one. Ironically, it's usually hard because if they are a good and loyal "hooligan" they already have a job, and are committed to their employer, like what you want.

I agree and disagree with some of this. Ken hit it right on the dot. As did pelican king. I worked for my dad for a long time and we hired all sorts of people throughout the years. Too make a long story short, my dad hired a guy who was fresh out of the slammer. My dad had a uneasy feeling about him, but something told him to just give him a chance. And to be honest he was one of the best employees he's ever had. And my older brother actually ended up marrying his sister. So really not all people with a past/ run in with the law are bad people. Granted a lot of them can be "repeat offenders" but the others really just want another shot at the good life. It's up to you as the boss to weed them out to your best judgement. Sorry you got burned a little bit. Hopefully everything gets dropped as it is without any damages. It's hard to trust anyone new to hire, whether they appear good or bad. You just don't know there real colors. Sometimes you find out the hard way.

Hire a Vet!! If you go the wanted ad route- Get references! Small business is tough (17yrs now for me)- Had 6 techs working for me at one point, now I have myself. (BTW - none of my previous employees stayed in the in the IT field, though they all left for "better" IT jobs) I prefer it that way as now I can't blame anyone but myself ;)

Oh yeah I found out the hard way alright...luckily I got my equipment back and back out making money with a new guy...not sure how long this one will last but I guess only time will tell. I'll give him a month lol. I'm already lining up the next guy and the guy after that.

Yeah I understand what you are saying and believe me if I could split myself in half to run all of my equipment I would...nobody will do the job as well as me and nobody will take care of my equipment as well as I do not to mention treat my costumers the way I do. Unfortunately I have to have 2nd guy. Hopefully one of these with some references and luck I'll hire the right person. Until then I'll go through them like underwear if I have to. Guess I have to be heartless ruthless and a bit of a dick if I want to succeed like these multi million dollar companies.

No more feeling bad for an applicant cause he hasn't been given a chance in years or he has a pregnant wife or he has 4 kids that need to be fed...because the min those sobs get a chance at a better job they won't feel bad for me...F×ck'em!
