Wtb aluminum 460 manifold.
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:00:27 PM »
The motor is a stock 460 that still has the cast iron manifold. The manifold is rusting bad, so I would like to run an aluminum one or I'll stick with the ol cast iron style if someone has one that's not to beat up. I'm not sure what year the motor is all I know is that the boat is a 1976 and the motor is a Harmon marine motor. Ralph?

Thanks

The old cast iron manifolds on those marine motors were cobra jet manifolds and other than the weight were really good manifolds!

I agree with Marc on that. But I have a Perfomer and a Performer RPM for the 460 laying around. Lemme know if you need pics. Got no real use for either of them, though the RPM intake is anodized Ford Blue. Both a good step up from the cast iron CJ manifold. Dual planes as well, though.

I kinda hafta mention this Marc. The "Marine Cobra Jet" intake was designed to work on CJ heads only. Yes, it fits, but way oversized for 90% of the heads out there. The Torker was designed for the mainstream of heads out there, and their port sizes, and tuned to.  I guarantee you, that Cobra Jet intake's ports were WAY oversized for the intake ports on your heads at the time. Prove me wrong.  ;)

There's a delicate balance sometimes between efficency and velocity. This is why port matching is so important. It affects both. I have 4 of those "cobra jet" intakes, and come get 'em if you want 'em, but understand, that is late 60's thinking.

Newer aluminum intakes offer far more than port size. Port size only really matters on cylinder heads, and on intakes when they can't keep up with the heads. Take your intake gaskets, have the head's intake ports matched to them, and do the same with your intake manifold, all will be good.

I'm not trying to make more power or anything. My boat has run good for a little while now and I noticed last year that there was rust and pieces of the manifold that looked like they were going to come off. Since the boat has been sitting and the manifold has had more time to rust I would just hate to gave a chunk of shit roll thru the motor. Stock stuff works for me as far as performance, because I'm pretty sure the motor has never been gone thru and it's been running good since 76 so why change something that isn't broken. So stock or aluminum either works for me as long as the new fits like the old

the manifold i have has been sitting outside for the better part of 5 years and you would have to do it anyway.
