WTB Barn find
« on: August 08, 2014, 05:23:57 AM »
Not sure if this is in the right section. If not, can someone let me know where to put it.

I live in TN, and I have been looking for a jet boat project to play with for quite some time. As some of you may know, there ain't many out this way, compared to Socal. I found this beast by word of mouth. Been sitting in an older gentlemen's shop for a good while. It ain't seen the sun in about 3 years. The man has owned it for 18 years. Anyways, to the boat.

89 Liberator 21 ft. tunnel, 468 BBC, mild work done to it. I'm thinking a Dominator pump? Hydraulic diverter, and a pump ratchet(first time i had ever heard of this). 850 carb, flowed to a 900, and (2) 21 gallon side tanks. I should have had a pen and paper, because this guy was spitting info out faster than Google. Said he's been racing jets since the early 80's. He has a list of everything done to it, maintenance records, etc. It isn't for sale to the public, he said he wants it to go to someone who knows what it is. His words"not some young punk, who's gonna go out and get people hurt with it". He's asking $12,500 for it. I haven't seen a whole lot of these, so hard to find something comparable. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here's some pics

Last picture he gave me, so it's a picture of a picture(kinda hazy)

Very cool float!  $12,5 might be a little high for something that hasn't seen water in several years, but that's up to you to decide.

I haven't had any experience with the Liberator hulls, but don't recall hearing of any serious issues.  The big things are going to be rot in the wood, delamination of fiberglass, hole in side of block... That's the stuff that gets expensive to repair.

Not sure what the difference is, but he also said it's a kevlar hull. At one point, he had a 600 +/- HP 505 in it. Said it ran well over 100

Kevlar is a lighter and stronger material, so you can lay down less of and still get the same strength.

Also there is a late 80's liberty for sale some where in Cail, I can't seem to find the info machine right now. But if I recall it was for $12k also and it is turn key. Like said above $12.5 might be a little high but it really depends on you and the boat.

I don't know how similar these are too the Eliminator Daytona but a 21 Daytona (no motor) is fetching pretty close to that.
I'd look it over for cracks, rot, and few laps on the lake before I hauled it away.
Really good price (assuming it's all in working order) for a clean 21kevlar turn key tunnel hull in my opinion.

I'm with beerjet on this.  After you look it over good take it for a good spin.  If you would like more input from the guys you would need more pictures.  Close ups of pump stingers all four sides of motor.  Remember no rash decisions this has proofed to be most important.  I still have buddies proofing it all the time and some never learn.

If memory serves me right Liberator is still making new boats, I have seen a couple with a 300 blender for $50k. Most of the ones I've seen for sale, do have blenders on the back. I've been in an late 90's 21 Liberator, with a  similar set up and I was hooked. Plus for the price compared to a Daytona, I don't need to go 100+ so it seemed to fit me. What it doesn't fit is my family... :-(

All the same things I was considering. I cant find anything bad about these boats on the ol interweb. I got a family boat(21 ft Carrera open bow), but it's got a prop and will only roll about 55. I got the funds to do this, but will drain me. I definitely dont need this, just a want. I was more or less trying to see if this was deal i shouldn't pass up. Is a smokin deal if i can get it for 10K? 8500?

And these things are almost copy cats to the late 80's Daytona's.

This one is super solid. all original interior and gel. the gel has some very minor issues, but great for a boat of this age.

I am still a little on the fence to take up this guys time for a test drive. I'm gonna marinade on it for a week or two. Like said above, impulse buying almost never pays off. :banghead:

Thanks for all the input

If you can get the guy to go 10K, grab it, run it and if you decide it's not right for you sell it to some young punk  ;)
