I am looking for a BBC gen IV jet boat pan with a windage tray that will clear the crank for a 496. I have a 10 quart now with out a windage tray and I am having oil pressure problems. If anyone has somthing that will help I would appreciate it. Let me know
Thanks in advance

Which pan do you have now?  What oil pressure issues are you having?

I'm using the B&B pan from Rex...very resonably priced and it works.

Its a dooley pan. The problem is when we have 10 quarts in the pan, at 1000 rpms it will run 60 psi and when we hit about 4000 rpms the oil pressure will drop to about 30 to 40 psi. so we removed 2 quarts of oil and tried it  again and the problem was not so bad, but it is still doing it. I think the problem is the crank is aerating the oil because of not having the windage tray

Is your pickup welded to the oil pump?  Is it welded all the way around the pickup or just tacked in a couple spots?

Bolt on to what?  Chevy's don't use bolt on pickups.  They're a press fit into the bottom of the pump...a shitty press fit at that, and some of the pickups have that little novelty screw hole to make you feel better.  All the little screw hole does is prevent the pickup from falling off of the pump.

The issue is that the press fit aftermarket pickups don't seem to seal for shit in the pump.  If there is even the smallest air leak, the pump will loose prime and oil pressure will drop when you start winding the thing up.  Weld all the way around the pickup, not for structure but to seal it and eliminate the possibility of air being drawn through where the pickup meets the pump.   Then try it again.

Thanks I will try that , but do you think that it could be aerating the oil and do I need a windage tray?

A windage tray is never a bad idea...but I would start with welding the pickup all the way around to seal it.

I run a castrol 10W-40 syntec in my motor...thin stuff.  I don't have any problems. 40W probably wouldn't be too bad, but I don't understand why people run the straight 50 or 60W oil....seems a bit on the thick side.

that is a pretty light oil, but it also depends on your clearances! if you feel ok buying a new one rex will have what you are looking for at a smoken price! for brand new, and it will clear the 4.25 crank!

Actually, it's not pretty light oil...its got a HTHS rating of over 3.5, which is better than a lot of "heavier" oils on the market.  I've got a buddy of mine who is THE authority in the US on engine oil and lubricants...I'll see if I can get him to whip something up to post on here.  I could write for days on what I've learned about oil in the last few months.  He might be able to simplify it a bit.

If you can run 10w30 and still have good oil pressure do it! It gets back to the pan quicker and get up to the top on start up quicker. It is also less stress on the oil pump drive shaft for when you start spinning alot of RPM's.

We tryed the 40 weight and only used 7 quarts, and the problem is still there. We can run up to 3500 rpms and have 60 pounds of oil pressure but when we jump on it and run it to 4000 to 4500 it will fluctuate down to 30 and 40 pounds. I am trying everything I can think of before I pull the moter
Thanks to all for the info :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Keep the Dooley pan, just get the tray in it. The aftermarket BBC puckups bolt to the pump housing. The thing is oiling itself like a lawnmower engine, dip N splash.

FYI, The Dooley pan is a factory 6 quart blank with a box fabbed to it, good stuff IMHO, I have three of them...How certain are you of the pan pick up to pan bottom? I have seen where the clearance was 1/4"-3/8" until the motor is allowed to rest on the pan and con-caves the bottom of the deal...Major no no..Sucks it right to the bottom like a sucker fish.

X2 on the windage tray, hell if you really want to badass it up, crank scraper.

Good Info, but I wouldn't run a crank scraper with a flat tappet cam. Roller, ok, Race engine, go for it, but you'll deprive the cam from some needed oil splash at the rpms we run at otherwise......imo.  ;)

There are ways around this.... :sly:

Ever notice how many holes are in the valley?   Groove the lifter bores and crossover the camshaft (external oil line to feed the front of the cam)...
