Lemme know if you need a starter, got a brand new one sitting on the shelf, just gotta go check the rotation to be sure, but can reverse it either way, it is a marine version bell housing starter with the heavy duty drive housing...

Nice job though, seriously... I have faith now. 8)

I think you need to paint the scoop to match. Tan with dark brown edges. Couple colors in between for stripes.

Ok now when i got home from work this morning i checked and it will fit ;D But that leads to a problem, No place to hook it up on the throttle....

Now that i have been looking, i think im going to change my carb set up..
What i mean is eliminate the regulator and just run a fuel log, and eliminate the riser or whatever you call it..
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi223.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fdd269%2F2savage4you%2F006-38.jpg&hash=60c1bb63bfa834a9920fff6fcc238946ba44e5ac)
I was looking at Jegs for a scoop mount, and would need to eliminate this stuff anyways.
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/55015/10002/-1
It would make it sit alot stronger with the scoop mount.....
So i think i will let this stuff go..

Looks good.
How hard would it be to move the buss bar to the other cylinder head to make sure there is no interference from the coil?
You might not have any problems, but if you haven't started wiring why chance it?
Hope to see it at Mead next month ;D

To do that i would need to make another mount or use the stock ugly one and center it ???
I will take another look at it tomorrow, maybe move it into the center
(maybe) :D

You amaze me Steve. You get more done in a couple hours than most of us, finger pointing directly at ME, in a day. And I thought I was kicking some A getting my thing done! :banghead:
Looks Great! Wish I Could run my plug wires that way, but to run them clear around the engine, then back under the headers just so they look that cool would require 6 to 8 foot plug wires! Maybe I'll try the same thing from the front to begin with......Shorter wires anyway. ;D

yes , that is still an option.. i like what Skip did on Josh's Tahiti

Ok , now i got wheels turning in my head...
I will "hardwire it"
I got it figured out in my head ;D

Very easy only seven wires maybe eight, color code them, and use heatsrink terminals ;D

...and use marine grade wire...
-
...and use marine grade wire...
???
I didn't use anything other than standard wire from NAPA, I shrink wrapped everything and used dielectric grease at all points of contact, never heard of marine grade wire

???

Agreed , it will never see the salty water so no reason for marine grade
Marine grade = Lots o $$$$$$$
-
Me either, Marine Grade? What's that, wire that's been sank before? Either it's insulated or not, and the dielectric strength of the insulation is set up for DC or AC voltages/current. That's as much as I have ever heard of wire ratings.
Did the Coast Guard find another way to make a buck sanctioning wire that I am unaware of?
O0
Ray
-
Yep it is a little more money, but IMHO it is the right way. And it is required for new boats...saltwater or not, ALL boats are a wet environments. Moisture wicks up the wire inside the insulation causing the copper to breakdown. Marine wire is tinned and will not corrode (green powdery residue form copper degradation). Marine grade wire has many more strands than automotive stranded wire. When I counted, the automotive 14 gauge wire had 17 strands, and the marine grade wire had something like 35 or 40, I lost count. This is important because more strands means the wire is more flexible, and can carry a greater electrical load than the same gauge auto wire. Look at any boat new or old, being professionally rigged, it's marine grade...
thanks for letting me share
-
Gonna chime in here, marine grade wire is she shizzle, but IMHO overrated for our uses in a rarely used jetboat. The advantages are that the wire will not degrade in wet environments, FWIW, my jetboat is in 100* weather and dry as a bone 80% of its existance, otherwise covered and in a garage, if the boat was either in the water for months at a time or built to last 50 years the story would be a little different, the wireing is only as good as the terminals used anyways, you can use marine wire and cheap terminals and been better off with the cheap wire...The tinned wire requires special terminals with the built in heat shrink tube to be done right, by the time your done with the electrical job, you would have spent at least three times more dough, which none of us have to begin with...Just my .02c :)
BTW, I have built over a dozen boats in the last 15 years and have used marine wire, I have also used automotive grade, I am betting you could not tell the difference ;)
GT
-
OK , Thread jacking you for a moment Steve, sorry
I get the strands thing. The same reason Monster cable costs 10 times more than generic Radio Shack crap. Cannot carry more load, just a more stable one. 8 Guage wire carries what 8 guage wire carries. I don't care how many strands there are. Like the main difference betweeen 8 guage and 8 guage THHN is the insulation. Both have the same amount of copper. We ain't pulling 4x4's out of the mud here.
From a different standpoint tho, more, smaller strands means more exposed surface area for oxidation. Basic physics.
But, well, OK, I'll toss it out there. If Water, salt water in particular, needs the stuff, the what about all the multi-million dollar Malibu beachfront homes. Do THEY require this wire? and they get more salt spray and moisture than a weekend boat does in two seasons. lol ......I'd even be willing to bet that the wiring in my car under the hood sees more water, and I live in the desert, than any boat I own's wiring will ever see.
ALL COPPER oxidizes and patinas. The only way to slow it is to insulate it. Where you make the connections, that's where it starts, and I get that. The shrink tubing, etc. are only solution. Still needs maintenance, meaning, inspection and checks for corrosion, cause it's still gonna corrode no matter what you do. All you can do is slow it down.
That's all I have to say about that, lol
Ray
I lied, I do, lol, Steve and I live in Arizona. Park rangers and County Sherrif's can't even spell marine, so we b ok regardless, lol. O0
-
I should be working on my boat. But I'm following Beerjet's example and taking a beer break. Sorry for that ;D

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi223.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fdd269%2F2savage4you%2F003-74.jpg&hash=14432d5b17f46db34e2e25af1aad84712ba61a33)
And now my new fuel log hits the scoop mount. the onluy thing i can think of is to use the "Bulkhead 90 and "t" to give me a little longer reach

Looking good Steve! My what a lot of progress working on someone elses boat! ;D
Oh and I think I found your 5/16" wrench and the nut you dropped. It's under the air gap runners to #6 and #8 cylinders unless your pic is backwards to me. (Could be, cux it looks like the dizzy is on the back too). :sly:

Why dont you just flip your plate , front over the back? :sly:

Why dont you just flip your plate , front over the back?
And then, a very reasonable solution presents itself. Good work Omar! Looks like it'd work to me from the pics as well. Dunno how good the carb and scoop will work under the air gap, but the fuel line will fit!
Ray

Thats how it was in my boat.
Cable up front .

It was made to mount this way and im going to mount it that way..
the holes for the scoop studs are recessed........ On the bottom ;D
I need a new cable anyways might aswell get it all new. i just tried a bulkhead an fitting on the fuel log and it gives me plenty of room now. So i just have to order now..
i really wish this town had a better marine store available
-
Looks like you might need longer carb mounting studs while your ordering parts ;D
Looks good, keep going and you'll be done soon.
-
See what i mean......... Just means i have to spend MORE money to make it right.....
Steve, take this for what it's worth but if you would just make up your fukcing mind and STICK with a choice, you'd have spent a couple of days in the water instead of fukcing with shit. I really want to see this boat hit the water, you're damn close, but you have to get stuck in and quit lollygaggin'

I dont understand how swapping the return spring mount and the cable mount would make a diffrence on the scoop mounting holes ???
I'm not there either.

I emailed Holley and asked if they have sometype of throttle bracket/extention and if not i will try to make one!!
I had one to use but with the scoop mount it wont work unless i grind some of the mount away ( not going to happen)
So tomorrow i will make a bracket then i will only need a cable should work fine and keep my pedal...... i guess i should stop posting here for help/ opinions cause then im only lollygagin :screwy:
And yes nobody is here to see it in person and give advice. I will have it figured out tomorrow....
Thanks for everyones input...
now lets leave this alone cause im really getting pissed!!!!!!!!

Nevermind,
looks GREAT Steve, keep on keepin' on. You'll get there.

a wise man once told me something....
the more you spend, the worse it fits
words to live by.
-
WTF said that? musta been the guy who sold me the Milodon Oil pan! Played hell getting that thing on after $400.
Given that, from what I've seen, Steve, you're the Mcgyver of making things fit. Get out your cordless drill, a blender , "d" batteries, a tampon, and some weatherstrip adhesive and I'm sure you'll get this thing in the water.
Ray

proppy is done...its up to you and irrebel now...

Hey Steve,
You could relocate the one stud that is interfering and counter-sink the underside.

Thanks ;) I really have not had the time to actually sit back and look at what has been done , ive always been busy with her dads boat, my dad and his little needs around the house that he cant do anymore. And then we have my G/F's 4 kids :banghead: and of course her bitchen cause im spending too much time on the boat
Sooooo........ i need some help i think i got it figured out but at the same time i think im confusing myself :sly:
Pic 1 this is my coil and ballast... Do i add the white ign wire to the orange side of the ballast and then to the solenoid and then the other wire of the solenoid back to the other side of the ballast.

I want to get this pig wired and started A.S.A.P.
I'll see if I can confuse you further :screwy:
From the dash, (normally purple) ignition wire goes to one side of the resistor, the other side of the resistor goes to the positive side of the coil and the (I) terminal of the starter solenoid, so in short there should be three wires on the ballast resistor...The (normally grey) lead goes to the tach and comes from the (-) side of the coil which also goes to the distributor...
GT
-
BTW that wiring diagram is full of shiat! how does the starter quit running once it fires, there will always be voltage on the start signal ???
GT

So follow the top pic here right, i told you i was confusing myself ;D

I think that circuit just gives the coil momentary full 12 volts on "start" same as + side of solenoid, and disconnects in "on" position.

OK fair enough, but while the engine is running that start signal wire has 8+/- volts DC on it and that wire goes to the starter solenoid, sooooo what keeps the solenoid from trying to pull in ???
I'm telling you, that schematic is bogus :-\
GT

Ok scoop is finally completed... would have been done yesturday but a big brown truck stopped by with a present... Thanks Tom ;)
And just like always the UPS guy and i sit there amd BS for awhile. Really windy yesturday and i had the scoop on my little roll around seat BIG MISTAKE sitting there bullchitting and all i heard was a couple real loud bangs :o
Yes you guessed it , the scoop went down.. Hit the workbench and even bounced of the boat trailer :'(
Sooooo........ It went back to the body shop (my shed) It was alot nicer but its taking up too much of my time so i patched her up and shot it with some clear coat..
This is a bad pic, it looks pretty good for being tossed around :banghead:

Nice work, that thing looks like it will match perfectly!

Steve, you STILL amaze me. You make something like that work and match as perfectly as possible, and look beautiful BTW, and you worry it's not perfect.
You are the McGyver of boats, I swear. (Give me a surfboard, a Bikini, some bailing twine and a paper clip and I'll build a Boat)
Very impressed, sweety, are you gonna make the trip to Mead this weekend with her?

No unfortunately im not making this trip , and im sure this comes as no surprise to some :D
Im really hoping these guys put another Avi trip together , that i will definately make.....

Ok lets try this again ;D
Notice the solenoid, my question is do the battery cable and starter cable both mount to the left terminal ??? Thats all i need to know the wiring diagrahm says they do......... But!!!!

Nope, not really, the question is still confusing the crap out of this simple Simon, but....The power to the dash (assuming the red wire) and the charging wire (assuming the white wire :screwy: ) and the battery cable and the starter all go to one...Is there a fuse or circuit breaker on the lead going to the dash? (if not there should be...) The other side of the solenoid goes to the start signal wire on the starter...Viola!
Looks clean BTW...
I assume that is a two wire starter....Are you sure of that solenoid? is the Orange wire going to the + side of the coil? how are the terminals labeled on that solenoid? It should read (S) and (I) the way you have it wired...sometimes the two smaller ones will have (S) and (G) for ground, this would be a Jeep style solenoid which won't work in that configuration....

Cool thanks thats what i needed to confirm..
yes they are fused at the dash , and the solenoid is from Omars Saguaro i do believe . and orange is going to the +
just wanted to make sure before i have them make my "special" cable :D

Please do yourself a favor and get a circuit breaker on the wire from the solenoid to the dash at the engine end, the fuse/circuit breaker protects the wire, not the electronics....

Well saturday is the big day ( i think ) now since this motor has already been broken in thanks to Omar :-* ;D should i add any additives to the oil. What im doing is running it for 20 minutes to get it to op temp and then flushing the oil out to add the good stuff. Valvoline VR1 20-50
Im using Rotella 15-40 to flush with ;)
I had to order a oil priming tool and dizzy shim kit so that should be here tomorrow i hope.. I think i have it all ready to go ???

Way to go Steve. We are all so proud of our boy ;D Safe to assume we will have plenty of pics and video to view ;)

If it has a COMP cam in it, it might be a good idea to put their cam additive at oil change. Thats what I da as per COMP's instructions.

We have learned over the last couple of years that there is no zinc in the oil anymore.Reason being is that most all new motors are roller cam systems,The lack of zinc in oil on flat tappet cams will chip the edges of the lobes, get into the oil pump, and thoroughly destroy your new motor from top to bottom.Lucas break in oil is readily available,or Brad Penn Oil,Made in the old Kendall Factory, yes its still green. Both of these are known to work to avoid the problem
-
Steve..didja get this thing fired ??? Didja "get it wet" yet? Let us know.... ;D
-
Anybody ever hear of using aircraft oil? Racing oils should all contain zinc compounds among other "controlled" addatives.
GT
-
Nope, but I'm sticking with the Joe Gibbs stuff. yeah, a buck twenty five or so a case, but my engines cost a LOT more than that!
Just my .02

I just got my boat fired last sat and im showing 10-15 psi on my fuel guage.... So i guess i put on the wrong fuel pump ,im running a Edelbrock mech pump and i thought it was only gonna put out about 7-8 psi.
So i can get a regulator and have to re'plumb my fuel line or just get a new Holley fuel pump that needs no reg and is good for 6 1/2 - 8 psi...
But will that Holley feed my 850 annular carb at 4-5000 rpm's ?
Im ready to go get this done , but don't want to make the wrong choice..
-
Jim had a bypass line to go to his fuel tank, looked simple enough to plumb, you should ask him. I think it went straight off the back of the fuel rail, and then just had a little ball spring one way valve.

We discussed that but remember , he has one tank.. My tanks are plumbed together so that set up wont work...
Im gonna look for a reg, it will give me more options down the road ;D

Easiest and best way Steve. Remember, bullet proof!, lol
But, and just thinking out loud, which is dangerous, with a regulator are you not stuffing the pump? You're talking about cutting it's flow nearly in half. Again, just thinking, WTFDIK?
Ray
-
I used to run both tanks into a T and then into the filter and then into the pump then into the regulator at 7 lbs or so.
Never any issues.
-beerjet-

Im running the same way minus the reg...
I did some diggin and the Edelbrock fuel pump im running turns out to be a race pump ( high volume )
I dont need no stinking race pump........ :screwy:
Just ordered a new pump and goodies from summit, boat will be running again by friday ;D
Funny thing. The Holley pump was $109 at Checkers here in town , but the same pump with the summit name on it was only $49 :sly:
I got everything shipped for under a hundo
So ill be back!!!!!

Steve, I've been following your post and noticed that you were recently having all kinds of fuel pressure issues. I have a Holley Fuel Pressure Regulator that I don't need. Not sure if you still need one or not but this one is for sale. I only used it once, but I obviously can't return it and I don't need it so.....do you still need one? It can be adjusted btwn 4.5 and 10 psi. I will also throw in the two AN fittings you see in the pic if you want them. They are 3/8 NPT to -6.
PM me if you are interested.

Thanks for your support guys but , i need more than that.. Been sick as fuk all week, was going to put the boat in the lake today but taking a day off work really put me behind :banghead: ( i need a fukin vacation )
Check this out, get a phone call from the FIL says the boat wont run. So now im thinking ok he blew it up already!!! Oh well his problem..
He brings it over to the house and i check it out. Pull the scoop off throw back the throttle and get gas from the secondarys.. So i get my can of start fluid, spray it in and it runs fine. So now im thinking fuel pump ??? then i remember this has dual tanks. Told him to switch tanks and i watched the fuel filter, i sprayed the carb once again and wouldn't ya know it that filter filled up with fuel and it ran fine.
So long story short..
He ran out of gas!!!
I guess he was in the middle of lake mochoppy and used a paddle for awhile till someone towed him in.
This is what i put up with , i had to leave work early to get him straight :screwy:
-
I sure hope he isn't as dangerous as he sounds.
