Still Working on New Boat Design
« on: March 17, 2008, 04:20:30 PM »
Thought I would post up this latest image of the new tunnel boat I'm trying to figure out how to finance.
This picture should help.  Since the last image posting I've changed it to a CJ with twin dominators and Headers. Figured out a cool trailer and added something to tow it with. Added some sugar and resurrected my old business name "Aire Kraft Boat Works Co."

Tom, like Omar said, it was a pleasure meeting you this weekend, hopefully we'll see you at some more races, I'd love to hear some of the stories of your racing past.

Just for the record it's not a photoshop pic.  It is completely modeled in 3-d using Sketchup. A realy cool program I use almost everyday for Architectural design.  I just like to push the envelope in most things I do.

I meant I was being  :screwy:  assuming anyone on this board even remotely thought I may have done that drawing. Very cool program I am sure.

The latest on the engineering portion is looking up. I now have a tunnel boat modeling program and started running some numbers. Unfortunately it does not understand Jet drives.  The program does recognize Arneson drives though so I looked to see how fast and how stable it would be with a prop hanging off the back.  Arneson has bad acceleration but once on the step lookout.  Computer has the speed at 218 and reasonably stable with 30% of the lift in the sponsons and 70% in the wing.  All I need is a one mile drag strip.

Not much new to report on. Bennett and I are having a hard time getting together. When the Space Shuttle flies, he has to be available 24/7. But I have worked a little on the computer model and have a nicer pix of it here.  Dimensions look like they will change soon.  The computer program indicates too much aero lift pulling the hull completely out of the water at speed.  Next I need to see how the adjustable aero parts will work on the design but the design program can't deal with adjustable surfaces.  No need for pit crew yet we're a long way from the water.

Per the current rules I don't see why not.  It's considered a mod-v type hull since it has a center pod per UIM.  They allowed it back when we raced Eliminator Daytons in Ski Jet and Comp jet in the 70's.  The whole idea of the boat is to see how a jet should evolve since then.  But beside all the rule stuff is it cool or what?

Had some discussions with Bennett today and I'm starting to change my thinking on how to progress.  A "test mule" may be in the works to establish optimum hull dimensions. Simply discribed, a center pod, two wing sections, and two sponsons able to be bolted together at different relative heights and angles all rigged up with pressure sensors in order to calculate lift/drag/speed/angle of attack etc.  With the economy going the way it is the project is starting to look more like a high tech backyard engineering hobby rather than the start of a new company... sad...

so when you talk about the center pod and the outside 'sponsons' (sorry i dont know much of the lengo), do you mean its kind of the same design of Advantages' new X-flight 29'? because i remember seeing that boat in an issue of hotban looking like a cat, but actually having a center v-hull under it, and the outside things acting for turning or aerodynamic stability...just curious, because that hull so far has been a hit ive heard...

BTW: sick ass design! i hope you get a chance to sprout one out of a mold someday  ;D ;D

Design is much more Daytona like.  Center pod is just wide enough for the intake motor and in this case the driver's butt to fit into.  The sponsons being the very much like a tunnel outboard.  Advantage's new design I saw @ LA Boat Show, It's a kind of hybrid I think they are trying to marry the advantages of a v-bottom (though I can't remember what they are... oh yea... rough water) and air entrapment of a tunnel.

Latest on building a boat. Trying to keep from doing this all myself, I went to a shop that prototypes cars, planes etc. to see what kind of budget it would take for the engineering, plug, molds and a first part.  The good news was they were very intrigued with the concept.  These guys build the concept cars for Ford, GM, Dodger/Chrysler, Chip Foose etc. They also make the bodies for John Force's Funny Cars. That's the real good news. They thought that a ready to go first article including all the stuff leading up to a first article would be about $1,250,000.  That's the real bad news.  Guess I'll build the plug in plywood and lay up the molds with lots of beer and help from weekenders like you SCJBers. Anybody got a 10x23 autoclave in there backyard?
