454 with HEI ign module keeps failing
« on: May 12, 2015, 09:41:19 AM »
I have a jet boat with 454 and for some reason it goes through ignition modules. The year before last it went through 3 or 4.. It has a HEI. I replaced coil plugs plug wires cap and rotor. Any ideas ??

Absolutely...Use only a GM sourced module...and run a heavy 10 gauge or 12 gauge minimum. I prefer 10 gauge.

I had something similar happen to me years ago. Do you have the old ones??? If so try them again!!! I ended up with a ground issue. And 12 volt drop.  Remember that unit Must have 12 volts!!!

The old ones went back to the parts house they put them on their little machine and they all failed on the tester so the warranted them. I cleaned under the distributer to ensure a good ground also inplugged the tach to see if that caused it, I made new ground  cables also soldered not crimped. I ran 10 gauge from batt to a relay to HEI for a shorter run.

Sorry to hear about your module issues.  I had a Fiero once (no laughing!  Well, ok maybe a little laughing ;) ) that was eating modules.  Turned out to be a faulty MSD coil.  Changed that out to a stock one and problem went away.

One thing that's vital when changing the module is that the mounting surface is clean.  Use a soft nylon or wire brush to get any corrosion off that plate.  Then make sure you use the goo that comes with the module.  It's there to conduct heat away.  Any old goo or corrosion will inhibit heat transfer and could fry the module.

Hope you get it figure out!

So I ohm checked from the coil where the ground strap is to the engine block had something like 60 ohms ... So I cleaned the area on the coil and the ground strap very well. Rechecked it and the meter showed no more than internal resistance.. Put it all back together and since then I have had two trips to the lake without loosing a module.

Make sure you have a good ground and also that you've installed it with dielectric grease.
