whats up guys have a question , just purchased a 1975 tahiti 455. I crank the motor over the only sound is some what of a loud clicking noise, the belt that is hooked to the alternator and the pulley to the mainshaft pulley does not move at all nor is there any cranking for the starter , does any body have any insight on this problem.

Are you able to turn the engine with a torque wrench on the harmonic balancer?

id suggest just using a breaker bar over the torque wrench.  if you want to keep any type of accuracy keep that thing in your toolbox. 

take out the spark plugs, and turn it over by hand.  if the motor turns freely then put the plugs back in.  before you go starting your boat, if you CAN, remove the driveline from the PTO on the motor so that just the motor turns and not the pump.  make sure the battery is fully charged at 12v or more, then make sure all your battery cables are clean and tight.  also check your negative from the battery to the block.  if it still doesnt crank, take a wire and try jumping from the battery +12v to the starter solenoid, perhaps it could be a bad ignition switch.

Sounds like a dead battery or corroded/loose battery cable connection to me......

have you jumped the starter to see if its working?

sounds like you got a frozen motor    you can try smacking the stater while trying to crank it to see if the starter is stuck but sounds like the motor is toast

Are you sure the solenoid is workin?

When you hit the key to start position, hold it there have someone tap the solenoid with a small hammer repeatedly at that moment...

Depends what kind of clicking you're hearing. If you're "actually cranking the ENGINE over, zee belt moves."

wait i said starter/solenoid too.  does that mean i buy myself a beer?

If its clicking the solenoid is working if its not spinning the engine is locked/ battery weak/ or the cables are old and no good or just have bad connections.

Oh and I prefer the tall cans. The mountains better be blue lol.

I'll play along 

The click could be the solenoid trying to engage the bendix (its job) and the starter motor not spinning (its job). 

My guess would be a frozen starter due to rust. 

Either way, replace the starter and solenoid, inspect/replace battery cables, and double check your wiring harness connections while you're at it.
