455 oil modes

Hi All
i bought a 455 olds engine. i believe it was in a jet boat but not sure. the guy i bought it from said he got it when he bought his boat. it was a spare engine and he had no need for it. i`m not much of an engine guy so my question has to do with the oil modifications. what are they and do you really need them and how do you tell if they have been done. thanks

Modello has the kit for the mods that consist of restrictors that are installed in the mains and restricted cam bearings. They also have restricted pushrods. As far as being able to tell if they are in the engine already, the really is no way w/o getting into the engine (maybe some else can chime in on this), but if you are going to freshen up the engine, I would suggest that you look into them. Dozzr also installed some oil drain back lines from the heads to the pan, maybe he can chime in or send him a PM. also check out these sites:

Blackbeard happy to help/coach if we can, heres my "02" post from Dozzers PB thread we build several of these motors a year they have thier "pitfalls" . Josh is finishing up a 455 motor tommorow (built by a "well respected Olds guru") that made it less than "1" season and could not have had more wrong with it

build it and treat it right it will give you years of trouble free enjoyment ! Tom

John (dozzer) bummer re the Olds,sounds and looks like you did most every thing you could or was recommended to you . We use a "reworked" standard volume pump ,large capacity pan (10 qts or better) ,restrict the push rods (roll pins) ,stock brg clearances , improve oil return flow, 15 40 rotella and hi quality filter ,hot OP will usually maintain around 50 psi ,25 to 30 at idle Tom

I had the 10 qt pan,some oil mods, I just bought the boat, Had to put bearings in it. Ran it 10 more times. Did stay in it for more than 30 seconds or so. The motor is a part now , bearings look great! I'm using them again. Put the drain back hoses on the back of the heads to the oil pan. Use radius fittings. No right angles. I got all my stuff a Parker hydrolics for 59 dollars. Hand drill, tap ( you may have to grind the end of tap down ) Also watch out with the 1/2 drill. It WILL whip your a$$ if not carefull .
