460 ford oil capacity
« on: April 23, 2017, 02:53:26 PM »
Dipstick shows full with only 3.5 quarts. I've search around the web for sometime only to find most stock front sump pans hold 5-6 quarts. I even pulled the oil drive plug to make sure it was empty. I'm thinking i must have the wrong dip stick? Does anyone have a dipstick that goes through the timing cover they could measure? Mine is 17-1/2" long and the full mark is 2-1/4" from the end.

Thanks

Honestly, measuring will do very little good because the tube could be the issue.

It's my opinion, I would put 5 quarts of oil and make a new mark on the stick.

The ultimate answer is to pull the pan and check it out, but that's a November solution, not an April one.........

@Bogger - to help you out (hopefully not confuse you more) my 460 stick measures way high with 6qts in it. My Hardin manual tells me it's a 6qt capacity engine and I have an old tech bulletin #78-5 that tells me early 1977 models had 5qt dip stick with a 6qt capacity, my boat is a 77. See photos and reference last sentence in last photo of tech bulletin. Engine model is H320 in case the highlight doesn't stand out.

I have the same issue, i changed oil, then started filling and 3 quarts the dipstick said full. 😐
I'm going to put 5 quarts in and see where it is at on stick.
Mine is is at the timing cover also.

I put 6 quarts of Lucas marine 20-50. Only showed a little over the full mark. So I don't know if I just had a brain fart that day or what. I've had no problems running 6 quarts
