Basset header issues... again

Well I'm a bit stumped on this one, I'm hoping maybe some debris are in the lines but the lines are pretty new. I had the boat out today at Puddingstone after I replaced my trailer bunks, I couldn't go over 12mph but I had it out  >:( My first problem was only one header getting water (a lot) above 1500 rpm then that changed to no steam out of either header but water coming out the weeps??? Headers were plenty hot, I'm pretty stumped as to how I have water out the weeps but no steam out the headers. My plumbing consists of: Valve at jet, then to T, into engine, Two dumps at the T-stat housing going overboard, valve at the manifold for header supply, Basset-T, then to headers. I played with the valve at the Basset-T a little bit but nothing. I usually keep the valve at the Basset-T just barely open. The only thing I changed since last outing was adding a valve at the jet. Now I couldn't really get on it today because of the speed limit but I still think I should have gotten some steam. I'm going to remove all the header plumbing and inspect but the water coming out of the weeps has me scratching my head, has anyone ran into this problem?

Make sure that your lines going to ur headers are the same length.  :thumbup:


You have a spring and ball inside ur basset T right ? If ur spring is really old it might weaken and let more water through at lower rpms


Im pretty much set up the same exact way as you.. My valve going to my T is pretty much shut. Actually i close it all the way and open it 2 turns which is not much. But just enough to blow the ball open in the T and feed the headers when im above 3500 rpm's. Some like it to open a little lower and some run no water, just up to what you prefer  :thumbup: :thumbup:

Why do you have two overboard dumps? this IMHO is wrong.

Why the barely open valve at the Bassett tee? This IMHO is wrong.

You should not have any water at all it under 1500-1600 RPM, not even a puff of steam.

Do your headers have orifices or just adapters to go from pipe to flare?




I have said it on here 1000 times or so.

From the jet, to a gate valve with an adjustable packing to lock it down,

From the gate valve to a divider tee to the front of the motor,

From the tee stat housing twice, once goes to a dump line not more than about 7/16" inside diameter and the other to a wide open emergency ball valve (optional) then the Bassett valve.

Adjust the gate valve so the headers come in at just above 1800RPM and flog the snot out of it....Water temps should be from about 120*F running up to about 160/180*F at idle.

If she runs a bit warm, use a larger dump line fitting, too cold use a smaller one. DO NOT USE A VALVE ON THE DUMP!!!.

This recipe has proven itself literally hundreds of times. Your making it too complicated.


Go pull your injector lines on the headers, check that the lines and the tee are clear, the holes in the little fittings that go to the headers should not be larger than about .060 (1/16").

Hope you get it all sorted out. :thumbup:

2.) By barely I mean a little bit less than half, anything half and above usually puts too much water in the headers.
3.) I never have water out the pipes at idle but always have water out the weeps from WOT to idle, usually for 20-30 seconds, Normal?
4.) I had the lines custom made at Basset to fit my headers, My bung fittings are slightly bent due to a Mechanic my Godfather used 10 years ago dropping the headers on them. I found this out when I bought new lines and they didn't fit  :o I went down to Basset and asked if the headers were still usable in this condition and they were so I had them make me new lines and purchased new fittings, everything has been okay until now. The lines and fittings are less than a year old, I don't think the holes would be over-sized so soon. I have the restrictor fitting that came with the lines is this what your talking about? I'm not sure what you mean by "Do your headers have orifices or just adapters to go from pipe to flare?"

In all honesty this makes little to no difference.

Check to make sure all is good, only takes a few minutes...

There are threaded adapters in the header pipes, the holes in those should be fairly restrictive.

How much water we talking?  spraying or dripping? how much time after a show of steam does it do it?

The only thing I have changed is the valve at the jet. It did not have one when I got the boat and my temps were always lower than the gauge could read.

Which is how cold?  I'm liking the 150*, but there are easier ways to get there.

I installed the valve and left it open about 3/4, I now have temps around 150 @ idle and water is flowing out the dumps so I don't think the valve is closed too much.


But you have too many ways for the water to leave, leaving block pressures too low, steam pockets can form very easily at those lower pressures. You wont see that on a gauge reading.

This would be expected on double dumps.

Basically from what your saying is loose the second dump and start over? Checking for debris and proper operation. Kinda sucks though, I had to drill a hole for that second dump  :banghead: I have to ask though, since block pressure may be the issue of the headers with the valve installed. If I keep the second dump, lose the jet valve and install a t-stat kit will this help? I really don't want to have a useless hole at the back of the boat... unless someone has a place diverter for a Dominator that they don't need  ;D I could run the cable through that hole...

Easy. The pressure I was talking about was before and after you put the valve on the jet.... :sly:

With the two dumps and no valve you had a buttload of flow which kept temps too low....But at the same time it was able to make enough pressure to operate the header valve.

After the valve was installed on the jet, you had less flow which equated warmer temps but could not make enough pressure to properly operate the valve. 

To make the right block pressure (would really like to see approx. 15-20PSI) your outlets should equal the inlets and be sized close to each other....Which is where I disagree with that write up.  ;)

Keep it simple and it can't outsmart you.... 8)

Thermostats really need a block mounted water pump to work properly.  Like an OEM automotive one.

I ended up having today off, Unexpectedly. So I decided to mess with the boat. I hooked up the hose and opened the T-valve all the way, disconnected the header supply hoses, barely turned on the water and waited. As soon as water started to flow out the dumps I had water out the header hoses :banghead:

So I took it all apart and found the seat for the ball was filled with gunk. I cleaned it up and checked all the other lines. pulled off the steel lines and made sure they were all clean, removed the fittings and made sure they were clean. Re-assembled and blocked off the second dump  ;) hooked the house hose back up and turned it on. no water out the header hoses  ;D I didn't want to turn the hose all the way up ( i'm not sure how much pressure that would be) but I turned it up enough for the dump water to land just before the steering and blocked it off a bit with my finger, water came out the header hoses  ;D

So far this looks like it might work out, I might get it out to Puddingstone this Friday to test. Thanks for the tips and hopefully I'll get a place diverter soon to make use of the extra hole at the rear :'(

Finally got it out today. Had to mess with the valves a bit but eventually got it where I was happy. Ended up with the vale at the pump a little past half open and the valve at the header T at half open. No water at idle, temps at 130-140* and good steam while driving. I havent gotten a gauge to check water pressure yet so I'm not sure if I'm good there or not. Where should i place the water psi gauge when I get one? Also, can I use an oil psi gauge??
