I have the d3ve a2a heads on my boat i just bought. My dad has a BBF that had the dove c heads and he put some procomps on it and gave me the dove c heads. How much better are they than my D3ve a2a heads and can i just put them on without having to change any of the valve train or pushrods? Compression difference? will i notice a power difference? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks, Blaine
The bad news: Your father's engine LOST power when he switched out the D0VE heads for the procomp heads (assuming no other engine changes). This is because the procomp head has a D3VE intake port, D3VE combustion chamber (20cc's bigger than the D0VEs and therefore he lost compression), downright lousy seat-to-bowl transition as delivered from procomp, etc. Basically, he lost power but saved 35 pounds (aluminum heads) which likely will not make up for the power he gave up. In the BBF world, the procomp heads are nicknamed "ProCrap" heads. (These observations may not apply if the engine is not stock and/or the heads were wildy reworked prior their to installation.)
The good news: You got yourself some D0VE heads! The D3VE heads utilize a different valve train than the D0VE heads, and so you will need to locate an OEM 1968-1971 429/460 valve train (very hard to find) or you will need to purchase a complete roller rocker valve train ($$$) and understand how to set it up correctly. When swapping out D3VE heads for D0VEs on a bone-stock 460, your compression ratio will increase from ~7.7:1 to ~9:1. Therefore, you will likely notice a power increase but the swap is not a simple "R & R" since you need different valve train, etc. Lot's to know and understand and a bit much for me to type at this time; grab a pen and paper and feel free to call and I'll be happy to point you in the right direction.
