502 I'd say. Crate,  with a bolt on blower. Voila.

x2!!!

To build an NA engine that makes the same horsepower, you have to step way across the line of reliability.  Get your tune dialed in and you can run mostly all stock parts (within reason).

Anyone have a good recipe for a 650 HP motor I don't want to reinvent the wheel.  Or have a big disappointment.  I have built car motors no boat motors.  Any idea of the cost from carb to pan.  Also whose a good shop in Riverside area.

650 out of a 468 by about 6200 on pump gas is easy to do and super reliable.... just built one a couple months back for a customer's TPR21' deck...

Going with a 496... you can get quite a bit more torque, and a bit more power and slide the curve downward a little bit... peak in the 6000ish area. Lighter, smaller boats can fudge a bit more compression... willing to adjust valves, you can go solid roller and get a little there.

But I will be perfectly honest... it ain't all about the "recipe"... it's the quality of the machine work and details during assembly that can either make a "recipe" work out to be good... or turn out like shit. JMHO.

I will need to have you guys complete the wiring as well.  You have done all the wiring in the boat now and the motor was pulled.  I will need it completed again.  I'm looking for a new motor for Chris Lupo TX 19

Sure building a 468 with 650 on pumped gas and reliable is a bit cheaper then crate blown but at the same time...

What shop nowadays by shop I mean machine shop can you trust to do quality work and won't charge and arm and a leg??? And because it's going into a boat there's no warranty.

I'd say buy crate, it comes with warranty no matter what you slap it into. Unless you can do your own machine work forget about shops...they are not what they used to be. Any little 5 ft 300 lbs mexican with a sign on his barn claims to do top notch work.

Crate, blown!

Boom! Done!

Wow...

WOW...

You're kidding, right? :screwy:

I don't know what to say here... as a person in the industry... and happen to have my own machine shop, build engines, and the very one you so kindly refrenced in your quoting of my statement/opinion, I find what you have to say as a personal insult... whether it was intended or not. I have spent years working hard to build a reputation of providing quality work, and doing the very best job I possibly can for each customer that walks in my door... be it a big budget guy... or some lower budget dude. Whether it be a full tilt drag motor, or trying to, sometimes, work with absolute garbage, unreasonable budgets, and fairytale goals. But... you do the damn best to deliver because that is your reputation, pride, and damn passion. Do you meet all those expectations all the time? No... but you do the damn best, and make sure above all else... the customer is happy with the result. I have given advice and helped out people that haven't spent a damn dime with me... and helped people sort out issues on things that they paid somebody else, a competitor, to build. And I can tell you right now...off the top of my head... I can think of several other machine shops and/or engine builders that I have worked with in the past one way or another that have done and will continue to do the same as I... provide the best damn work they possibly can. Now... if you go down to Vernon, pick out some dude that doesn't speak English to do a set of heads for 50 bucks and some cervezas... then yes... you will get shit work from some guy that couldn't possibly give half a damn about your river cruiser... seeing you at the river... and having a beer with you at said river... or any one else's that matter. You pay for crap work... expect crap work.

Now this arm and leg BS for quality machine work? Get real bud... if I wore a tool belt, owned a hammer... and spent a day re-doing your roof... you'd have no problem dropping 1000 bucks in labor.... hell... you'll throw a Benjamin to the guy standing around going, "Si" all day raking leaves with your rake... and not bat an eye. But I invest tens of thousands of dollars in equipment (yeah... that stuff actually costs money) and roughly the same in tooling and measuring equipment... and charge 170 bucks to spend a few hours boring and honing a block... and THAT is being charged an arm and a leg? :o The capital investment to hourly payout in the engine machine shop business is borderline retarded... guys standing in front of Home Depot get a better return on their investment. So, yeah... some of us economics 101 challenged dumbasses may actually do this because... WE ACTUALLY LIKE TO DO IT AND TAKE PRIDE IN OUR WORK!

As for warranty... true... you cannot offer a 12 month/12k mile warranty on a boat engine... too many variables that could lead to a possible failure that would not be any fault of the builder or parts used. BUT... I have NEVER not taken care of ANY boat engine that I have built that had a problem... you will not find one person here or on PB that could say otherwise... and I'm gonna tell you right now... there are other builders on here and on there that are the same way... again, it's pride and reputation.

Bud... I'm gonna tell you... your assumptions are baseless and ignorant... and AT BEST a broad-brush attempt to smear an entire industry because of what may be a bad experience, personal issue, etc... whatever... at one time or another. If that is the case... sorry guy...  let it go and move on.

If this was not an attempt at an insult... then I apologize for my rough tone and scathing response... but I take it quite personally when people defame and/or bash my work and insult my reputation... especially when it is directed right at me on something I care a great deal about. That is something I do not take lightly.

Have a pleasant rest of your day!

My post was never intended towards Mexicans or any color for that matter...The person could be white black yellow pink it doesn't matter...matter of fact is we live in socal and most shops out there whether it's a some lube job car wash or a full blown machine shop is ran by Hispanic people. I'm sure you are good at what you do bud and I think me dropping off my motor at your place would be just fine but I've been burnt by too many shops that claimed to be legit machine shops and they were ran by Hispanics...I'd say the same thing if I got a crappy paint job numerous times from a white guy...

Trust me bro people that know me know I'm the least racist guy. If you took my post the wrong way and felt insulted that's your own problem...skeletons in the closet...jk.

Easy boys...... James has come with a great referrals from Lupo and several others and I have seen his work.  A lot of people do engines,  pumps and other work but very few take pride and really care about what they do.  I will stand by my decision to have James work on my boat.  I'm not sure how you think those crate motors get built or the customer service that they come with.  You are right this is a open form and should help the members weed through the good and bad shops.  That was a pretty broad brush stroke there.  Like I said I will be using James and if by some chance I have a problem I will have James to talk with not some one on the phone that does not know what a piston is.  James I will be calling you this afternoon to see what I'm headed for.

You assume I am Mexican... I am not... but you did say that my industry is littered with 5' tall, 300 lb Mexicans... so since that is your point of reference, I presented my argument in terms you set forth. Perhaps in the area in which you live or do work, then, that may very well be plausible... but I can assure you, this industry is as diverse in race and quality of work as any other. I do have a Mexican guy who works here... and does an absolutely awesome job, attention to detail, etc... used to work on the RC Cola/Buick GTP team as the cylinder head guy...  so even that argument is not universally correct.

You being racist? Don't know... don't care... you brought it up. To be honest, that wasn't even the point... and if that is all you got out of my post...  :banghead:

Here is the very, very short version of my previous post: "You pay for crap work, you will get crap work. Do not be surprised or angry when you get exactly what you pay for."

And this is about all I am going to post in this thread on the subject... my point has been stated... any further would be to argue for arguments sake, and therefore eventually become personal rather than opinions of merit.

I don't know this guy or his work. I was just speaking from personal experience. Not sure why he thought I was shoving a stick up his a** by mentioning 5 ft 300 lbs Mexicans but I didn't mean it that way. I don't give a sh*t what type of work you do or how good tour work is because all I'll do is buy over the counter chevy crate engines, when I need one. No need to get your panties in a bunch. Good luck with your machine shop and your super badass mexican head guy. I simply don't care bro. Again good luck.

The gentleman simply asked about a 650 hp setup. I gave him my opinion and you gave him yours. Unfortunately you took mine the wrong way and that's fine. Moving on...

Dude, it's time to STFU...from the guy you come to for advise.

Bostick is a good builder...we've talked before, I still don't understand how he does what he does for the price he does it for.  Crate engines are mass produced junk for the most part...good enough for the occasional romp but I'd bet money one couldn't hang WOT through 20 gallons of fuel like a piece that was put together by a guy with a passion, a functional brain, and measuring tools.

You go get that crate motor, put
It in a boat (that GM says not to) and hang a blower on it (that GM says not to)...run it like I run my boat...see how many minutes it lives.

One more thing "baby" now that you got me all hot and bothered over here...you telling me to STFU is not cool. I've known you for 8 years almost and since day one all you've driven is jap crap cause according to you American muscle is unreliable. You'd never buy an American pos and I'm quoting you. You built one motor for the white tunnel and you enjoyed it for a month at best before you sank your boat at big river. While you were building your motor and I came over once a week offering my help all you did is bitch and complain about the local mexican machine shops that did garbage work and how you are about to give up...about after spending 10 gs plus on your 496 you sank it and immediately gave up and turn into outboards which you still have till this day, telling me how you are done with big block and it's not worth it blah blah blah...you can correct anything I stated above anytime you want to and if you do my friend I'm calling you a fu*king liar!!! But I guess these people on here will never know the truth cause the only 2 people in those conversations was you and me.

So today's lesson pat my sweetheart,  before you are about to tell your "friend" to STFU think about how much truth your "friend" knows about you lol. Not to mention half this board knows all you ever do/did to any of your floats is ni**errig the sh*t out of it so it can run for half a day. Having said that best o luck pal. See ya at big river.

Seriously guy... I don't know what your problem is... (I can only speculate)... why I now seem like your new best friend... and quite frankly, don't care.

Hey dude... sorry about your experience... but again... YOU PAY FOR CRAP WORK... YOU WILL GET CRAP WORK. I mean it does not get simpler than that.

You buy crate engines... super... I am totally happy for you.         :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I agree I simply voiced my opinion about a 650 hp bb. Well with a little racial remark I suppose not sure why bobstick took it the wrong way. I'm sure he does a great job I wouldn't know. Many other ways to reply to someone's post without attacking them.

Brother you are mistaking my whole argument seriously...i never said what kind of work I got done where and how much I paid so you are simply assuming. Right or wrong? It's not how much you pay for its the quality. All I ever said is that I got burnt by a couple of machine shops before and that's because I trusted the wrong people. That's my mistake. You could've simply said "hey you got chibbed,  here's my name and number I run a machine shop and I'll do you right, ask about me people will tell ya". Voila you could've had another costumer. Instead you take my opinion and I guess my non meant racial slur the wrong way and attack my opinion. Like I said I don't know you, I have no idea how your work is so I can't talk sh*t about your work but I can say negative things about you as a person for not dealing with my post\opinion differently.

502 crate blown was my opinion. You think you can build something better more reliable for the same amount or less??? Great! That's what the guy is asking for. Post parts prices and your number for him but don't attack another members opinion.

Find a reputable builder, it took me 15 years and about $5k in metrology gear to learn the difference between shiny and good. I've learned that there are a lot more shops out there that are run by mechanics than there are run  by machinists.  Example, Few understand the merit of valve seat to guide Concentricity, and fewer still understand how to measure it properly, and why the fowler gage is a POS.  609 does.  I discussed a lot with him on PB about 4 years ago when I tooled up to do head work on my mill, but then had my son and my priorities changed.  There are 3 people I'd let do machine work for me....609 is one of them...but he's not tooled to rechrome wacker cylinders :-)

The photo you posted on another thread of your buddy passed out with his pants down, with a happy face spray painted on his ass and a hot dog sticking out of his ass, is not helping your argument about PM's and Facebook :screwy: :screwy:

I kinda like the fact that The Mods didn't step in, and instead they let it run to a logical conclusion.  Just like the Ford vs. Chevy arguement (both place third behind Mopar and Pontiac for making cheap HP by the way) everyone has a favorite recipe/builder for making power.  It is up to the customer to decide what is right for him.  It is his money and he needs to do his research and ask lots of questions.  Lots of folks have gone to Bostick and have been very happy and his reputation seems to be well deserved.  Lots of other people have gone the crate 502 route and have been happy too, but I have never seen any evidence that an OEM warranty would still be in effect if a blower was added into the equation.
And then too, it brought Beerjet out of the closet and onto the threads again.  Be careful what you wish for people.

Thank for the info.  I was just trying to see if the guys were running some of the bigger cubic inch engines and how they liked them.

The further away from from the hp per ci you get, the less reliable its gonna be.
That's also assuming you are gonna be beating on it.
I like to think that the nicer you are to it, the longer they last.
My cruiser has kind of turned me into an old man in the sense that I rarely floor it.
It's not really magical when I do so I don't even bother.

Everything about a motor build is a tradeoff.  Big inch motors will make more low end torque usually but you get a lot of weight moving around which can shorten a lifespan if not balanced and assembled with extra care.  Another factor people rarely look at is the ratio between intake and exhaust flow.  Efficiency here can make up for a lot of fancy parts.  There will be a point where heads and intake can't keep up with CI.  Also boats are sooo different from how cars operate that you really need to deal with builders and salespeople who understand the unique needs of boat motors.
But you are following a well worn path, there are many 650 hp boats out there.  Maybe come out to the CJ races and talk to the guys who are running flat out for 15 minutes at a time.  That is real world reliability right there!

You ask the question 496 or 540.  Those are to different blocks.  I would be curious what you have to start with.   That would dictate the basics of my build.  You need a block with a 4.5" bore if you're going to build a 540.  You can build about 500 ci out of a 454 block, but that's it.  I believe in the saying, "There's no substitute for Cubic Inch."  So build as big as you can with what you have.  If money is no object, then go with a Dart block and build a sweet 540 that spins about 6000 rpm and makes 700 + H.P. all day long.

Frankly, this is the conversation you have with your builder, and from what I've heard Bostic would be an excellent choice. Then you come here and announce what you decided.   As this thread has shown, the internet is full of opinions, and they're usually worth exactly what you paid for them.

Good Luck with the boat and the build.
