Hey guys...I recently bought a jet with a 460. As stock as it gets. I’m wanting to upgrade it some. First thing being a better beefed camshaft. What would be the best mild cam? Not trying to be the fast guy out. Just don’t want to be the slowest haha. Any info helps. Thank you in advance
1. Your engine does not look bone stock on the exterior, and even though it might be stock internally there are still different versions of 460s which may have differing compression ratios and differing camshafts. Therefore it would be wise to first figure out exactly which factory engine combo you have.
2. Even if one were to bypass Point 1 above by simply suggesting a camshaft larger than was ever issued in a production 460, a camshaft of that size would require that the heads be remachined so as to prevent mechanical interference issues within the standard valve train and new valve springs which may or may not be suitable for the factory installed valve spring height. In other words, you cannot just install such a cam into the 460 engine and go run it again (unless it is an antiquated cam profile which diminishes power gains, in effect, when compared to current day, modern cam profiles).
3. Besides, even if you opted for Point 2 with all the necessary machining and setup, you still might have one of the most common production engines with a 7.8:1 compression ratio and so a cam of that larger size still couldn't provide its greatest power gains, and in fact would be a lot of money spend for a nominal power gain.
Ford 460's are great engines but were wildly detuned early in production due to the federal emissions regulations. Therefore they respond greatly to increased compression, spark advance, and fuel delivery (cam), in the correct proportions
